Build a core team around roles, then adapt to the opponent’s damage, resistances, control effects, mode, and version-specific systems.

The most reliable Hero Wars strategy is to build a focused core team, then adjust it to the opponent and game mode. Start with a tank, support or healer, and damage dealers; check enemy damage types, resistances, and control effects; and choose heroes whose skills work together. There is no single lineup that wins every battle—and advice must be specific to either Hero Wars: Alliance or Hero Wars: Dominion Era, whose systems differ.

First, identify which Hero Wars you play

Hero Wars refers to two versions with separate help centers and mechanics. Alliance’s game basics describes a level cap of 120 and modes including Campaign, Arena, Grand Arena, Guild War, and Global Championship. Dominion Era’s game basics describes a level cap of 130, includes pets, and lists Clash of Worlds. Don’t transfer a lineup, level cap, or mechanic from one version to the other without checking that it applies.

Build a workable core before chasing counters

Begin with role coverage: usually one tank to absorb pressure, at least one support or healer to keep the team functioning, and damage dealers to finish opponents. This is a starting structure, not a fixed formula. The right balance depends on the heroes you have developed, the enemy lineup, and the mode.

Focus resources on a core roster rather than spreading upgrades across every hero. Alliance’s progression guidance specifically recommends developing a core group for Campaign and Arena. Treat it as a dependable foundation, then make targeted substitutions when a matchup calls for them.

Scout the opposing team before changing yours

A proposed swap should solve a visible problem. Check what the enemy deals, what it resists, and how its control effects work before deciding that a hero is a counter. Dominion Era’s team-building guide recommends considering damage types and resistances, control effects, skill resistance, and whether the opponent can be countered. For example, if an enemy resists magic, physical or pure damage may be a better route; if it resists a skill your plan depends on, that plan may fail.

Alliance players can inspect opponent details in the in-game team-selection view, including level, power, class, faction, main stat, skills, Artifact Weapon bonus, and effectiveness categories. Use those details to explain a lineup decision rather than relying on a universal “best team” list. Power is useful context, but it doesn’t tell you whether your skills and damage types match up well.

Choose combinations for the skill interaction

Synergy means that one hero’s skill makes another hero’s more effective—not simply that both are popular. In Alliance, Krista creates ice thorns that damage enemies who move through them, while Lars pulls opponents through those thorns. The combination works through that interaction, as described in Nexters’ Hero Combinations guide.

The same principle applies to counters: match the answer to the threat actually present. Alliance’s hero guidance gives examples such as Rufus against magic and pure damage, Celeste to block healing, Andvari to protect allies behind him from displacement, and Sebastian against stun or curse effects. These are matchup examples, not a permanent tier list; a counter only helps when the opponent is using the mechanic it answers.

Account for the version’s extra systems

Dominion Era: choose pets for the team

Dominion Era’s team-building guide recommends choosing pets around the team’s core heroes; Merlin is one example for a mage team. It also describes patronage effects, including Cain granting bonus energy on successful dodges for heroes such as Aurora, Dante, and Jet. Consider whether a pet strengthens the team’s actual plan, rather than choosing one in isolation.

Alliance: consider artifact effects

Alliance uses artifacts rather than Dominion Era’s pet system. Nexters’ Hero Artifacts guide says an Artifact Weapon grants a team bonus for nine seconds when its hero uses the first skill; Celeste is listed as an exception with a 4.5-second duration. Artifact Books and Rings can also be used by heroes who need them. Factor an artifact into a lineup when its bonus changes how the team functions.

Evaluate a team or hero swap on the right criteria

Before committing to a change, compare the options on the points that affect the fight:

  • Role coverage: Does the lineup have a way to absorb pressure, sustain allies, and deal enough damage?
  • Skill interaction: Do the heroes’ skills reinforce one another, or does the plan depend on an interaction the opponent can disrupt?
  • Damage and resistance: Can your damage dealers threaten the enemy through its defenses?
  • Control and protection: Do you need to prevent healing, resist control, or protect heroes from displacement?
  • Mode and development: Does the team suit the mode, and are its heroes developed enough for the matchup?
  • Version-specific systems: In Dominion Era, does the pet fit the core team? In Alliance, does an artifact bonus meaningfully contribute?

Mode rules and account progression matter: the games unlock modes as players advance, and the same lineup need not be equally useful everywhere. Dominion Era’s team-building guidance also notes that hero level, stats, opponent power, game mode, and control effects can all influence a battle.

Why “highest power” and “best team” aren’t enough

Nexters’ Alliance Hero Combinations article puts it plainly: “High team power does not always guarantee victory.” Its guidance emphasizes tactics and effective team building, and warns that new characters may lead developers to revise balance and hero interactions. That makes fixed rankings and matchup advice time-sensitive: check the current version, mode, and opponent before treating a recommendation as definitive.
