Herobrine is a Minecraft legend, not an established character in official vanilla gameplay. The white-eyed, Steve-like figure and the stories about strange structures or appearances grew through fan posts, videos and retellings. Mojang’s recurring “Removed Herobrine” patch-note line is a reference to that legend, not evidence that the character was a vanilla mob.
Is Herobrine real in Minecraft?
Not in the unmodified game as an established mob or character. Herobrine is real as a piece of Minecraft folklore: players have shared stories and staged sightings, and mods can add their own versions. Those fan-made portrayals do not establish that Herobrine appears in vanilla Minecraft.

A screenshot or video showing a white-eyed figure may be a staged scene, an edited image, a mod, or another player’s creation. The image alone is not proof of a hidden official entity.
Who is Herobrine supposed to be?
In the familiar version of the legend, Herobrine looks almost exactly like Steve, Minecraft’s recognizable player character, except his eyes are solid white. Stories attribute mysterious appearances and changes to the world to him, including unusual structures, tunnels and altered trees. These are folklore motifs rather than verified vanilla-game mechanics.

How did the Herobrine legend begin?
The story is commonly traced to an anonymous online post around 2010 claiming that a strange player-like figure appeared in a single-player world. The single-player setting made the supposed intruder especially unsettling: no other player should have been there. This early chronology is commonly recounted retrospectively, so it is best understood as the reported origin of the legend rather than a fully verified account of every first post.
Erica M. Winfrey’s 2025 article in Contemporary Legend describes how forum posts and livestreams helped the story spread, including a staged Copeland livestream that used an altered image. More posts and videos encouraged viewers to treat the events as if they were happening, then share their own accounts and theories. Winfrey writes: “The more stories were posted, the more people became interested and got involved, creating a whole community around a figure that previously had no existence in this game.”

That cycle of retelling explains how a fan-created figure became a durable community legend without being part of the official game.
Why do Minecraft patch notes say “Removed Herobrine”?
Mojang’s Java Edition release notes repeatedly include the line “Removed Herobrine.” For example, the official Java Edition 1.15.1 release notes, published December 17, 2019, list it under “Changes in 1.15.1,” alongside performance and stability changes.

The same line appears in the official notes for Java Edition 1.20, Java Edition 1.20.2 and Java Edition 1.21. In those lists, it is a recurring reference to the community myth; the notes do not document a Herobrine mob or describe a specific removal. The cited release notes establish that the joke recurs, but they do not provide a formal explanation of its original intent.
