Its strongest qualities are a distinctive beat-driven fighting system, colorful presentation, memorable characters, humor, and soundtrack. Critics have responded warmly overall, though the limited setlist and stretches of repetitive combat or button prompts may be drawbacks for some players.
What is Hi-Fi Rush like to play?
Rather than asking you to play a conventional music game, Hi-Fi Rush puts action combat inside a world that pulses to its soundtrack. Attacks, enemy movement, environmental effects, and platforming challenges follow the beat. Timing actions with the music can improve your score, but the central appeal is the way rhythm gives ordinary action-game movement and combat a shared sense of flow. Xbox Wire’s launch coverage describes this beat-responsive design and the game’s Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC launch.
That distinction matters if you are deciding whether you need rhythm-game experience. The game is an action adventure with rhythm-informed combat, not simply a sequence of musical input tests. GameSpot praised the combination of rhythm and character-action combat, noting that the score encourages players to improve without making every missed beat feel punishing. GameSpot’s review scored it 9/10.
What do reviews praise?
Critics particularly highlight the game’s audiovisual identity: its expressive animation, music, humor, and cast of characters help the rhythm-action premise feel cohesive rather than like a combat system with songs layered on top. The combination itself is a major strength; the beat is part of how the game communicates the action, not merely background decoration. Metacritic’s critic-review page collects praise for the hybrid gameplay, characters, humor, visuals, and music.

- Compete in an all-out mass start race—collide, grind, and fight your way to the finish

- Go wild on the heights of iconic US national parks like Yosemite, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.
The soundtrack also gives the fights their momentum and personality. If you enjoy action games with strong visual style and a clear musical identity, those elements are central to the experience rather than optional extras. PlayStation’s official page additionally lists an alternate original soundtrack intended for streamers. The PS5 feature page describes that option alongside the game’s other features.
What are the main drawbacks?
Repetition and the setlist
The same musical foundation that gives the game its identity can become less effective for players who want more variety. PC Gamer found the setlist limited for the musical era the game evokes and described some combat as less compelling. Those are reviewer judgments, not problems every player will experience, but they are worth weighing if you need a large range of music or a combat loop that constantly changes. PC Gamer’s review discusses these reservations.

Prompt-based sections
Some sections built around button prompts may feel more tedious than the free-flowing combat. Metacritic’s review excerpts include criticism of these moments, so the game’s rhythm idea does not guarantee that every encounter or sequence feels equally engaging. Metacritic’s Xbox Series X critic-review page provides additional review context.
Does it offer reasons to replay?
Yes. PlayStation’s official PS5 listing describes replayable levels, unlockable outfits, and optional modes including Rhythm Tower and BPM Rush. These features give players additional ways to revisit the game beyond simply completing the main adventure. The page also lists the alternate original soundtrack for streamers, which is useful if you plan to broadcast gameplay and want a different audio option.
