A Pokémon has one Ability at a time, and whether that Ability is Hidden depends on the species, the game, and how the Pokémon was obtained.
“Automatically” can also describe an Ability’s effect: the Pokémon’s Ability may activate by itself when its conditions are met. That automatic activation is separate from obtaining a Hidden Ability.

What a Hidden Ability actually is
A Hidden Ability is a rarer Ability option associated with some Pokémon species. It is not a bonus that every Pokémon gradually unlocks. A species may have one or more ordinary Ability options and, where the game supports it, a separate Hidden Ability option. The exact options and ways to obtain them vary by game.
That means two Pokémon of the same species can legitimately have different Abilities, while another species may not have a Hidden Ability available in the game you are playing. The fact that a Pokémon can learn moves, evolve, or participate in battles does not by itself add a Hidden Ability to its possible options.
#1 Best Overall
- Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
- Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
- Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
- Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
- Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.
Two meanings of “automatic”
The Pokémon Company International describes an Ability as “a power that is automatically triggered when necessary conditions are met.” For example, an Ability can activate during battle without the player selecting it as a move. This explains automatic activation; it does not mean that the Pokémon automatically receives the Hidden Ability.
Acquisition is determined earlier, when the game generates or distributes the Pokémon. The encounter method, parent Pokémon, event distribution, and game version can all matter.
How Pokémon get Hidden Abilities
There is no single series-wide method. The practical possibilities fall into three categories:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Special encounters: a particular encounter type can have a chance to produce a Pokémon with its Hidden Ability.
- Inheritance: in games that support it, a parent that already has the Hidden Ability can pass that option to an Egg, but the result may still be an ordinary Ability.
- Distributions: an event or gift can provide a specifically selected Pokémon with its Hidden Ability.
Ordinary wild encounters, routine leveling, and normal battles should not be treated as universal Hidden Ability unlocks. A method that works in one generation or game may be unavailable or behave differently in another.
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield: the Max Raid route
In Sword and Shield, the official guidance distinguishes ordinary wild encounters from Max Raid Battles. Wild Pokémon typically have one of their two potential ordinary Abilities. Pokémon caught in Max Raid Battles may instead have a Hidden Ability.
Rank #2
- Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
- Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
- Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
The game’s official Max Raid explanation uses cautious language: Pokémon caught in these battles “might” have Hidden Abilities. Max Raids are therefore a chance-based route, not a guarantee that every raid catch will have the rarer Ability.
Why ordinary Galar encounters are not enough
The official Sword and Shield strategy guidance says Pokémon roaming Galar will never have their Hidden Abilities. For that game-specific example, Max Raid Battles are the necessary encounter route for finding a wild Pokémon with the Hidden Ability. Catching the same species in an ordinary overworld encounter does not eventually convert it to the Hidden Ability.
This rule should not be generalized to every Pokémon game. It describes the encounter rules in Sword and Shield, where the encounter source determines which Ability options are available.
What the Ability Capsule can and cannot do
An Ability Capsule switches a Pokémon between its two more common Abilities. It cannot switch a Pokémon to its Hidden Ability, and it cannot remove a Hidden Ability in favor of one of the ordinary options.
That makes the Capsule the wrong item for solving a Hidden Ability problem. If a Pokémon was caught with an ordinary Ability, using the Capsule only changes which ordinary slot it uses. It does not open a third, Hidden slot.

- Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea.
- Embark on an independent study called the Treasure Hunt to gain new experiences, meet new people, and find your very own treasure.
Breeding in Sword and Shield
Breeding can produce an Egg with a different Ability, but the Hidden Ability must already exist in the parent line. If neither parent has the Hidden Ability, the Egg will not hatch with it.
Even when a parent can pass on its Hidden Ability, inheritance is not guaranteed. An Egg may hatch with one of the more common Abilities instead. In other words, breeding can multiply access to a Hidden Ability, but it does not make every offspring inherit it.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon: SOS chains
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon provide a different, game-specific route through SOS battles. When a wild Pokémon calls additional allies, newly called Pokémon become more likely to have Hidden Abilities as the chain grows.
The official strategy article identifies a chain of around 30 calls as maximizing the odds described for that game. That figure belongs to the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon SOS guidance. It is not a universal requirement, a guaranteed result, or a rule that applies to Max Raids, breeding, or every other Pokémon game.
What the chain number means
Reaching the approximate target improves the chance in the context of that SOS method; it does not promise that the next Pokémon will have a Hidden Ability. You still need to encounter and inspect the called Pokémon, and the species must have a Hidden Ability available in that game.

Pokémon HOME gift example: Hidden Ability starters
Some Hidden Abilities arrive through distributions rather than encounters. Pokémon Support describes a Sword and Shield-to-Pokémon HOME transfer gift containing Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble with their Hidden Abilities.
How that gift was claimed
- Transfer a qualifying Sword or Shield save connection to Pokémon HOME.
- Open the mobile version of Pokémon HOME.
- Choose Mystery Gifts.
- Open the Gift Box and claim the available Pokémon gift.
This is an example of a distribution rule, not evidence that every player receives a Hidden Ability Pokémon automatically. The support information updated January 30, 2026 says those gifts are one-time claims. If one is released or traded away, it cannot be reissued.
Availability also depends on the terms of the specific distribution. A past gift should not be assumed to remain claimable indefinitely, and a gift in one game or service should not be treated as a general feature of all Pokémon titles.

Hidden Ability methods compared
| Game or route | What must be true | Is it guaranteed? | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sword and Shield Max Raid Battle | The species must support a Hidden Ability, and the Pokémon must come from a qualifying Max Raid encounter. | No. The official wording says a raid Pokémon might have one. | Ordinary Pokémon roaming Galar will not have their Hidden Abilities in this game context. |
| Sword and Shield breeding | At least one parent must already have the Hidden Ability. | No. An eligible Egg can still hatch with a common Ability. | If neither parent has the Hidden Ability, the Egg will not hatch with it. |
| Sword and Shield Ability Capsule | The Pokémon must have one of the two common Ability slots. | Not applicable. | It switches common Abilities only; it cannot add or remove a Hidden Ability. |
| Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon SOS battle | Use an SOS chain so newly called allies become more likely to have the Hidden Ability. | No. Around 30 calls maximizes the odds described by the official strategy guidance. | The chain guidance is specific to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. |
| Pokémon HOME distribution | Meet the requirements of the particular transfer gift and claim it through the stated Mystery Gift path. | For the listed gift, the distributed Pokémon is selected with its Hidden Ability. | The Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble example is a one-time distribution and cannot be reissued if lost. |
A practical way to pursue a Hidden Ability
- Identify the exact game. Do not begin with a method from another title. Sword and Shield Max Raids, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon SOS battles, breeding, and HOME distributions follow different rules.
- Confirm that the species has a Hidden Ability in that game. Not every species has one, and the available options can vary by title. A general species assumption is not enough.
- Choose the supported acquisition route. In Sword and Shield, start with Max Raid encounters or a parent that already has the Hidden Ability. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, use the SOS method. For a distribution, follow the event’s stated claim conditions.
- Check the individual Pokémon’s Ability. A successful encounter is not the same as a successful Hidden Ability roll. Verify the Ability on the Pokémon you caught or received before investing time in breeding.
- Use breeding only after you have a parent with the Hidden Ability. This can produce more opportunities, but each Egg remains subject to the game’s inheritance chance.
- Do not spend an Ability Capsule expecting a Hidden Ability. The item changes only between the two ordinary slots in the Sword and Shield context described above.
- Protect one-time gifts. For a distribution that cannot be reissued, avoid releasing or trading the Pokémon unless you are certain you no longer need it.
Common misunderstandings and their fixes
“Every Pokémon has a Hidden Ability waiting to unlock.”
False. Hidden Abilities are species- and game-dependent options. The available evidence does not establish that every species has one, so check the exact species and title rather than assuming a missing slot can be unlocked.

“Leveling up or evolving reveals the Hidden Ability.”
False. Progression does not automatically add the Hidden slot. The Pokémon must be generated, inherited, or distributed through a route that supports the Hidden Ability.
“The Ability Capsule gives any Pokémon its Hidden Ability.”
False in the Sword and Shield example. The Capsule only swaps the two common Abilities. It is not a Hidden Ability converter.
“A parent with a Hidden Ability guarantees that every Egg inherits it.”
False. A parent is a prerequisite for the inheritance route described, but the resulting Egg can still hatch with a common Ability.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“Thirty SOS calls always produces a Hidden Ability.”
False. Around 30 calls is the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon strategy article’s odds-maximizing guideline. It improves the chance in that method; it does not guarantee the next ally.
“A gift can be reclaimed after an accidental release.”
Not for the cited Sword and Shield-to-HOME starter gift. Pokémon Support says the distribution is one-time and cannot be reissued after the Pokémon is released or traded away.
Why the game version matters
Hidden Ability rules are not a single universal system applied identically across the series. Sword and Shield make Max Raid Battles the relevant wild-encounter example, while Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon use SOS chains. A HOME gift follows distribution terms rather than encounter odds. Breeding conditions can also differ by game, species, and parent combination.
For a specific Pokémon, the reliable question is not simply “Does this species have a Hidden Ability?” It is “Does this species have that Hidden Ability in my game, and which acquisition paths are enabled there?” Without both answers, a method can appear to fail even when it is working as designed.

Bottom line for players
Pokémon do not automatically receive Hidden Abilities. A Hidden Ability must come from a game-supported encounter, inheritance route, or distribution, and each route has its own conditions and odds. In Sword and Shield, look to Max Raid Battles or breeding from a parent that already has the Hidden Ability; in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, use the SOS system; and treat HOME gifts as limited distributions with their own claim rules.
