SEGA has confirmed the death of Hideki Sato, its former president and a key figure in the development of several landmark Sega consoles. Engadget, attributing the original announcement to Japanese gaming outlet Beep21, reports that Sato died on February 13, 2026, aged 77. SEGA’s tribute confirms his passing but does not state his age or date of death.
What SEGA confirmed—and what was reported
In its official tribute, SEGA said it was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hideki Sato,” offered condolences to his family and friends, and identified him as company president from 2001 to 2003. The statement does not give a date of death or his age.
Engadget reports that Sato died Friday, February 13, 2026, aged 77, and attributes the original announcement to Beep21. Those details should be understood as reported by Engadget, rather than as details included in SEGA’s statement.
Who was Hideki Sato?
Sato began his career developing arcade machines, according to SEGA, and later became one of the company’s most prominent hardware leaders. SEGA credits him as instrumental in the development of the SG-1000, SC-3000, Mega Drive/Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, and Dreamcast. Engadget reports that he began working with Sega in 1971; SEGA’s tribute does not specify a start year.

The label “father of Sega hardware” captures his significance, but it should not be taken to mean he personally designed every system. SEGA describes him as instrumental in their development, a contribution made within a company and its development teams.
His approach to hardware included the games around it
A translated, republished February 1990 interview with Sato offers a glimpse of how he discussed hardware in relation to software. Asked about the Mega Modem, he explained why Sega had delayed its release: “The main reason we delayed the modem’s release in the first place was because we wanted to have a sufficient number of downloadable game titles ready. Even if we released the hardware first, it wouldn’t be very appealing without games to play.” The Sega-16 republication identifies the interview as originally published in Beep! MD in February 1990 and credits Andrej Preradovic for the translation.

In the same interview, Sato said Sega wanted to offer software “from those for enthusiasts to those that are popular with the general public.” These comments show him discussing hardware alongside game availability and audiences; they are not proof that he alone designed Sega’s consoles or that every product followed one personal philosophy.
