High on Life is worth considering if you enjoy irreverent comedy, strange alien characters and a steady stream of talking-gun banter. Its reception is mixed among critics, and the humor is a real dividing line: players who find the jokes grating may not enjoy the experience even if the premise appeals to them.

High on Life is a first-person shooter and adventure game from Squanch Games, released December 13, 2022. You play a bounty hunter fighting an alien cartel with a crew of talking guns. The Metacritic listing categorizes it as an FPS; the US PlayStation Store listing describes it as a shooter/adventure.

How are the reviews for High on Life?
Metacritic’s page, accessed in 2026, displayed a 67 Metascore from 48 critic reviews, labeled “Mixed or Average,” and a 7.6 user score from 1,271 user ratings, labeled “Generally Favorable.” Those are snapshots that can change; they are not sales figures, player counts or a representative survey of all players.
In the critic set shown on that page, 25 reviews (52%) were positive, 18 (38%) mixed and five (10%) negative. The split reflects varied responses rather than a consensus that the game is either a must-play or a failure. Metacritic aggregates reviews; it is not the author of the individual reviews.

What do reviewers disagree about?
The comedy is the main taste test
The game leans heavily on irreverent dialogue, absurd situations and characters that keep talking. That persistence is part of its identity, not a brief opening flourish. If you like offbeat humor and enjoy characters interrupting or commenting on events, the banter may be the main attraction. If you prefer quieter exploration or jokes in moderation, the same stream of dialogue can become tiring.
Shooting has to work for you, too
Some reviewers praised the writing and comic scenarios while criticizing the shooting or finding the humor unsuccessful. IGN France’s review excerpt, reproduced on Metacritic and dated December 14, 2022, sums up that split: “High On Life is a Comedy FPS that hits its target with its writing but not so much with its shooting.” Treat that as one critic’s assessment, not a universal verdict.

Who is likely to enjoy it—and who may not?
- Consider it if: you want a shooter with a strong comic voice, enjoy bizarre characters and scenarios, and are comfortable with frequent dialogue.
- Think twice if: constant banter tends to wear you down, comedy is the main thing you want to avoid, or polished shooting is more important to you than the game’s comic personality.
- Weigh both sides if: the premise sounds appealing but you are unsure about the humor. The mixed critic reception and more favorable user score show that reactions differ; neither score predicts whether the jokes will work for you.
Which platforms and versions are available?
Metacritic lists versions for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The official US PlayStation Store page lists PS4 and PS5 versions, a High On Life + DLC Bundle, and High On Knife as an add-on. Check your own region’s live store listing for current price and exactly what a bundle or edition includes; availability and offers can vary. It also lists adjustable difficulty, some stick sensitivity and inversion options, and the ability to pause offline. These are details for the PlayStation listing, not a complete accessibility audit or confirmation that every option is available on every platform. Check the listing for your edition and platform if a particular setting is essential.
