GitHub’s 2019 js13kGames roundup highlights ten games from a competition that asked developers to build a JavaScript game in 13kB or less during a 31-day jam. The eighth annual competition used the theme “back” and drew more than 200 submissions, according to the article. Its first-to-tenth ordering reflects votes by participating developers—not a judge-selected ranking.

What the 2019 js13kGames roundup covers

Lee Reilly’s GitHub Blog article, published October 8, 2019 and updated April 15, 2020, presents ten community-voted selections from the jam. It does not claim to list every entry. GitHub describes js13kGames as a community-run game jam in which developers create a JavaScript game within the 13kB limit over 31 days. The 2019 theme was “back,” and the article reports more than 200 games submitted. Read the GitHub roundup.

The article says the selections are ordered from first through tenth by votes from developers who submitted games. It does not give vote totals or explain the ballot rules, so the ranking should be read as the roundup’s reported community vote order rather than as a fully documented scoring system.

The ten highlighted games

  1. Xx142-b2.exe

By @bencoder and @SalvatorePreviti. Commenter Christer Kaitila praised its overlapping timeline puzzles, calling it an excellent use of the theme with near-perfect execution.

How to choose which game to try

  • For puzzles and timeline play: start with Xx142-b2.exe, which Kaitila praised for overlapping timeline puzzles.
  • For platforming: try Play Back for its distinct platformer concept, or Bounce Back if tight controls and a considered difficulty curve sound appealing.
  • For unusual mechanics: Push Back is the roundup’s fluid-dynamics pick, while Retrohaunt was praised for exploring varied ideas and mechanics.
  • For a shooter: [SWAGSHOT] is the first-person shooter in the selection.
  • For browser or mobile play explicitly noted: GitHub identifies Push Back and Dwarfs: There and Back Again as playable in a browser or on a mobile device. The article does not establish equivalent availability for every other title.
  • For compact level design: the Spartez Team’s comment makes Nano-wirebot notable for levels organized around one simple idea.

Play the games and explore their code

GitHub’s article links to the games and their source code, and encourages readers to clone or fork a game and experiment with its variables. That makes the roundup useful both as a short list of browser-game ideas and as a starting point for developers interested in how a small JavaScript game can fit within the jam’s 13kB constraint. The official js13kGames resource listing categorizes the article as a showcase of the top ten winners: js13kGames resources.
