Hillthorn is designed to let you investigate a missing-person mystery through cards and visual clues without spoken dialogue. Steam documents ten accessibility features for the planned release: adjustable text size, color alternatives, camera comfort, custom volume controls, stereo sound, no-quick-time-event play, mouse-only input, touch-only input, save-anytime functionality, and an option to play at your own pace. Together, these settings address reading comfort, color perception, motion, sound, motor control, timing pressure, and interruptions.
The game is planned for release on November 10, 2026, for Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, although final features can still change before launch. The practical setup below uses the settings currently documented for the release build and clearly separates them from options shown only in an earlier prototype.

What makes Hillthorn an accessibility-focused mystery game?
Hillthorn comes from Fool Moon and Finnegan Motors and is published by Raw Fury. Its investigation takes place in a secluded mountain community, where you examine clue cards, connect evidence, and follow a missing-person case using logic and intuition. There is no spoken dialogue carrying the plot, so the legibility of card text, symbols, interface states, and visual presentation matters more than it would in a dialogue-heavy adventure.

That structure also changes what “accessible” means. You are not trying to follow a rapid conversation or memorize a voiced line; you are repeatedly inspecting information and deciding what to do next. A larger type setting can make a clue card usable, a color alternative can make a state readable without relying on hue alone, and a slower pace can give you time to reason through a connection. Save-anytime support is especially relevant if reading, fatigue, pain, or other circumstances require frequent breaks.

Every accessibility feature listed for the planned release
Steam’s accessibility section identifies ten features. The table explains the practical benefit of each one without assuming controls or options that have not been documented.
| Feature | What it changes | Who may benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Save anytime | Lets you stop the investigation when you need to, rather than waiting for a checkpoint. | Players who take regular breaks, manage fatigue, or need to pause unexpectedly. |
| Adjustable text size | Increases the size of writing on clue cards and interface labels. | Players with low vision, visual fatigue, or a smaller screen. |
| Color alternatives | Provides an alternate way to distinguish information that might otherwise depend on color. | Players who are color-blind or have difficulty separating similar hues. |
| Camera comfort | Changes presentation or movement effects intended to make viewing more comfortable. | Players sensitive to motion, camera movement, or visual discomfort. |
| Custom volume controls | Allows audio levels to be adjusted to a comfortable mix. | Players who need to reduce particular sounds or balance the game with other audio. |
| Stereo sound | Offers stereo audio output for the listening setup that supports you best. | Players using headphones, speakers, or a preferred left-right audio arrangement. |
| Playable without quick-time events | Removes timing-demanding quick-time-event interactions. | Players who find rapid prompts difficult because of motor, reaction-time, or attention constraints. |
| Mouse-only option | Supports completing the game with mouse input rather than requiring a broader control scheme. | Players who prefer a pointing device or need to avoid keyboard input. |
| Touch-only option | Supports touch input without requiring another input method. | Players on touch devices or those who find tapping more comfortable than other controls. |
| Playable at your own pace | Reduces pressure to execute actions quickly while you investigate. | Players who need extra time to read, think, reposition, or recover between actions. |
Recommended setup before examining your first card
The game’s options cover different needs, so you do not have to enable everything. Start with the reading and input choices that match your device, then add comfort and pacing options if they help.
- Set text size first. Open the game’s accessibility or display settings and increase the text until a normal viewing distance makes card writing and interface labels comfortable. Use the smallest size that remains easy to read so more of a card remains visible at once.
- Choose a color alternative if hue is not a reliable cue. Enable it before beginning an investigation if you have difficulty distinguishing colors. This avoids building a mental map of clue states that later becomes hard to interpret.
- Adjust camera comfort before extended play. If movement or presentation effects make you uncomfortable, turn on the camera-comfort option before spending a long session examining the mountain community.
- Remove timing pressure when needed. Select the no-quick-time-event mode if rapid prompts are inaccessible. Also enable the own-pace option when reading speed, fatigue, or decision-making time is the main concern.
- Pick one primary input method. Use mouse-only on a computer if pointing and clicking are easiest. Use touch-only on a phone or tablet, or whenever direct tapping is more comfortable than a mouse or keyboard.
- Set audio for your listening environment. Use custom volume controls to create a comfortable mix, then choose stereo sound if that matches your headphones or speakers. Lowering audio is a valid accessibility adjustment; the mystery is conveyed through cards and visual investigation rather than spoken dialogue.
- Test stopping and resuming. Use save-anytime support to make a test save, leave the game, and return before beginning a long session. This confirms that the interruption pattern works for your routine.
Making clue cards easier to read
Adjustable text size
Text size is the most direct setting for Hillthorn’s card-based design. Clues are not incidental subtitles; they are evidence you must inspect and connect. Increase the size until letters remain distinct without leaning toward the screen or relying on magnification. Check both a dense clue card and a short interface label, because a size that works for one may be less comfortable for the other.
A larger setting can change how much information fits on screen. If a card requires scrolling or repositioning at your chosen size, take that trade-off as a sign to use the game’s own pace and save-anytime features together. You can read one section, save, and continue without rushing to retain every detail in a single sitting.

Color alternatives
Color alternatives are intended for cases where color alone is difficult to perceive. Turn them on before interpreting clue relationships or interface states so that you learn the alternate presentation from the beginning. The documented feature does not specify the exact replacement symbols, patterns, or labels, so the precise visual treatment may depend on the final build.
Camera comfort
Camera comfort addresses presentation or movement effects rather than the size of text. Enable it if panning, transitions, or other visual motion causes discomfort. Because the setting’s exact behavior is not described, check a short section of play after enabling it and keep it on if the presentation feels easier to tolerate.
Removing timing and interruption barriers
Playing without quick-time events
Steam lists Hillthorn as playable without quick-time events. In a standard quick-time event, progress depends on pressing a button during a narrow timing window. The no-QTE option removes that timing-demanding interaction style, which can help if rapid reactions, repeated presses, or visual prompts are difficult. It does not mean that every investigation decision is automated; you still examine cards and choose how to pursue the case.
Playing at your own pace
The own-pace option targets a different problem. Even without quick-time events, a game can create pressure through fast transitions or expectations that you act immediately. Own-pace play gives you room to read a card, compare clues, and decide what a connection means before continuing. Pair it with a larger text size when reading speed, rather than reflexes, is your main barrier.

Saving anytime
Save-anytime support is useful for planned and unplanned interruptions. Save before stopping to rest, change your listening setup, or switch devices, and use it to divide a long investigation into shorter sessions. The listing confirms that saving can happen at any time, but it does not specify the number of save slots, whether every platform shares saves, or how cloud synchronization works.
Choosing mouse-only or touch-only input
Mouse-only play
Mouse-only support lets you rely on a pointing device instead of combining mouse and keyboard inputs. It may suit players who use a trackball, a one-handed mouse, or a setup in which pointer movement is easier than key presses. Position the device so you can reach cards and interface controls without repeated stretching, then combine mouse-only input with own-pace play if clicking speed is also a concern.
Touch-only play
Touch-only support is particularly relevant on phones and tablets, which are among the announced platforms. It can also help players who find direct tapping more predictable than moving a pointer. Hold the device at an angle that reduces glare and fatigue, and increase text size before judging whether individual cards are comfortable to inspect.
The release listing does not promise remappable controls or controller support. Do not assume that a particular gamepad, switch device, or keyboard layout will be supported until the final control documentation confirms it.

Audio options without spoken dialogue
Custom volume controls
Custom volume controls let you set audio levels to your environment and hearing preferences. They can help when game audio competes with a screen reader from another device, household sounds, or hearing sensitivities, although Hillthorn’s listing does not state that it supports screen readers. Adjust levels while examining a card rather than waiting for a stressful sequence, so the mix is comfortable before you settle into the investigation.
Stereo sound
Stereo sound provides a left-right audio presentation for compatible headphones and speakers. Choose the arrangement that matches your equipment; a setup that collapses channels or places one ear closer to a speaker may be more comfortable with your device’s own balance controls. The documented feature does not describe a mono mode, independent left and right sliders, or directional-audio cues.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the earlier prototype showed
An earlier prototype page listed additional support for a color-blind-friendly presentation, an interactive tutorial, one-button input, and keyboard-and-mouse controls. Those details are useful evidence of the developers’ accessibility direction, but the page identifies that build as a prototype. Treat these items as provisional rather than as guarantees that every one will ship unchanged in the November 2026 release.

In particular, “one button” could describe an interaction mode in the prototype, but the current release listing does not define how it worked or whether it remains available. The same caution applies to the prototype’s keyboard-and-mouse wording: the planned release explicitly documents mouse-only and touch-only options, not a final keyboard-control map.

Features that are not established yet
The available release information does not establish screen-reader support, subtitle customization beyond the language information shown in the listing, remappable controls, or a dedicated high-contrast mode. It also does not state whether text can be presented in a specific font, whether interface narration is available, or whether accessibility preferences synchronize across Steam, Switch, iOS, and Android.
These omissions are not proof that the final game will lack those functions; they simply are not documented in the current listing. If you depend on one of them, verify the final platform-specific options before purchase and check for an updated accessibility description after launch.
Quick setup profiles
Use these combinations as starting points rather than fixed prescriptions:
| Need | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Reading fatigue or low vision | Adjustable text size, own-pace play, save anytime | Large cards reduce visual strain, while slower progress and short sessions leave time to rest. |
| Color perception difficulty | Color alternatives, adjustable text size | Alternate presentation reduces reliance on hue, and larger labels make other distinctions easier to inspect. |
| Motion sensitivity | Camera comfort, own-pace play | Presentation comfort and reduced urgency address different sources of discomfort. |
| Limited rapid motor control | No quick-time events, mouse-only or touch-only input, own-pace play | Removes narrow timing windows and lets you use the input method that requires the least complex coordination. |
| Frequent breaks | Save anytime, own-pace play, custom volume controls | You can stop safely, resume without rushing, and keep audio comfortable when your environment changes. |
Release timing and what may change
Steam lists Hillthorn for November 2026, while an official community announcement gives November 10, 2026 for Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. Because that date is in the future, the final menu labels, platform parity, and prototype features can still change. The ten features in Steam’s planned-release listing are the strongest current guide, but they should not be treated as an immutable specification.
For the most reliable launch-day check, compare the accessibility section on the store page for your platform with the settings visible in the installed game. If a feature you rely on is missing or behaves differently, note the platform and version when contacting the publisher; accessibility options can be updated independently of the game’s story content.
Bottom line
Hillthorn’s documented accessibility set is well matched to a wordless, card-driven investigation: make clues larger, replace color-only distinctions, reduce camera discomfort, remove quick-time events, choose mouse-only or touch-only input, tailor audio, save whenever you need, and investigate without a forced pace. The prototype suggests additional ambitions, but only the ten features listed for the planned release should be counted on until the November 10, 2026 launch build confirms anything else.
