What Hillthorn asks you to do
Hillthorn is a dark investigation game from Fool Moon and Finnegan Motors, published by Raw Fury. You play an outsider searching for a missing person in a secluded mountain community where locals are reluctant to share information. There is no spoken dialogue. Instead, the story is delivered through visual Clue cards and the deductions you make from them.

The official description identifies three possible ways to engage with a card: Investigated, Explored and, in some cases, Talked to. The demo describes the central loop as combining actions, clues and characters. In practice, that makes Hillthorn closer to assembling an argument than to collecting a conventional inventory: an image becomes useful when you can explain how it relates to another image, a person or a location.

The game also includes a ticking clock, more threads than can be followed in the available time, multiple endings and knowledge as progression. Those features change how you should play. A card is not necessarily important because it immediately solves something, and a failed lead is not necessarily wasted if it teaches you which visual details belong together.

How to read a Clue card
1. Inventory the visible facts
Before choosing an action, describe what is actually present without interpreting it. Look for people, objects, terrain, weather, traces, barriers and repeated symbols. A footprint is a trace; a fallen tree is a barrier; a particular item may be an object; a change in weather may distinguish one scene from another. Keep the first pass literal.
This prevents a common beginner error: deciding what a picture “means” before noticing the small detail that makes it useful. A damaged object, an unusual placement or a route that cannot be taken can be more informative than the largest subject in the frame.
2. Separate observation from inference
Write two short notes for each card. The first records what is visible. The second records what that detail might connect to. For example:
- Observation: a path is blocked and a distinctive object lies beside it.
- Inference: the obstruction may link this location to whoever owns or moved the object.
Keeping those statements separate makes it easier to revise a theory when a later card contradicts it. Hillthorn rewards accumulated knowledge, so an early guess should remain a hypothesis rather than becoming an unquestioned fact.
3. Look for relationships, not isolated objects
Environmental details matter because they connect a location to a person, event or possible motive. Ask what relationship the image suggests:
- Does a trace indicate that someone passed through?
- Does an object match something associated with a character?
- Does terrain explain why a route, meeting or disappearance could occur there?
- Does a repeated symbol appear in more than one context?
- Does weather or damage establish that two scenes belong to different moments?
The useful question is not merely “What is this?” but “What other card would make this detail significant?”
Hillthorn does not present every card as a simple item to pick up. The available action tells you what kind of evidence the game expects you to test. The exact option depends on the card. These labels are not a guaranteed order of operations. Choose the action that best tests your current hypothesis. If a character is clearly associated with an object, investigating the object may be more informative than immediately talking. If a blocked route is the only unexplained feature, exploring may reveal why it matters. The point is to make each action answer a question. This loop turns a wordless scene into a chain of testable decisions. It also gives you a clear stopping point: once an action has answered its question, move to the next unresolved connection rather than repeating the same type of interaction. Hillthorn’s combination-based structure is easier to manage when you externalize it. A notebook, document or hand-drawn diagram is enough. Put a card, character or location in each box and connect related boxes with a short label. A useful map is not a transcript of every image. It is a record of why two pieces of evidence might belong together. For instance, connect a location to a trace with “possible passage,” an object to a character with “possible owner,” or a barrier to a route with “access problem.” Those labels tell you what to test next. Revisit the map whenever new knowledge arrives. A scene that looked atmospheric at the start may become relevant when a later card supplies a matching object, person or symbol. The game’s knowledge-as-progression design means interpretation can develop without the picture itself changing. Every action advances the clock, and the game warns that there are too many threads to follow in the available time. Treat actions as a limited investigative budget rather than as free clicks. Prioritize a lead when it can connect several cards, explain an unusual detail or identify a person who appears elsewhere. A low-information detour is one that repeats a known fact, has no visible connection to the missing-person case or cannot test a specific hypothesis. Before acting, ask: What answer would make this action worthwhile? If you cannot name an expected answer, make a note of the lead and wait for a stronger connection. This is especially important when several unexplained details compete for attention. Pick one lead, perform the action most likely to clarify it, then write the result. Do not spend several actions following an unexamined assumption. A short note such as “route explored; no new connection yet” preserves the information without consuming more time immediately. The Tool Desk The game signals that revisiting untrodden paths has a cost. An efficient first run is therefore not the only worthwhile outcome. A path that fails to resolve the disappearance can still teach you which visual details connect, which characters are relevant and which actions are expensive. Record that lesson so a later run begins with better priorities. Choose Investigate when the card contains a specific object, trace or damaged feature that could yield a fact. This is usually the best response to a detail that looks deliberate rather than merely scenic. Compare the result with your map: did it establish ownership, timing, movement or another relationship? Choose Explore when the unanswered question concerns where a path leads, why access is blocked or what lies beyond the visible area. Exploration is also appropriate when terrain itself may explain how people or objects are connected. Because it advances the clock, avoid exploring every possible direction without a reason. Use Talk to when a character is available and you can explain why that person matters to a card, location or object. The game’s premise says locals are reluctant to share information, so a conversation should be treated as evidence to interpret alongside the environment rather than as a replacement for examining it. Recommended Free Tools Do not measure success only by whether the first run reaches a definitive answer. Hillthorn has multiple endings and uses knowledge as progression. A run can be valuable because it reveals a connection that makes a later route clearer, even if another thread remains open. At the end of a run, review three things: Use that review to change your priorities on the next attempt. Do not assume that one missed interaction proves a card is irrelevant; it may have required knowledge from another branch. When a new clue changes your understanding, return to earlier cards mentally and, when the clock allows, physically. Re-reading a scene is not repetition if you are asking a new question. The first visit may have established that a route exists; a later discovery may suggest who used it or why it was blocked. Revisiting is most useful when one of these conditions is met: Balance that benefit against the cost of spending another action. If the revisit cannot test a specific relationship, keep it on your map as an open lead instead of following it immediately. Fix: inventory every concrete element. Hillthorn’s story is presented through visual Clue cards, so terrain, weather, traces, barriers and placement can carry investigative weight. Fix: state the hypothesis first. An action should test whether a person, object, place or event is connected, not merely reveal another image. Fix: rank leads by how many relationships they might explain and how clearly the card supports them. The ticking clock makes indiscriminate exploration expensive. Fix: preserve the observation and mark the connection as unconfirmed. Knowledge can change the meaning of a scene, and multiple endings make replay part of the design. Fix: place what a character tells or reveals beside the visual evidence. The game’s loop combines actions, clues and characters; none should be interpreted in isolation. The free Hillthorn Demo released on February 19, 2026. Its official listing says it contains a few locations, puzzles and an overview of the game loop. Use it as a low-risk way to practice the method above: describe each card, form a connection, choose an action and record the result before moving on. The demo is particularly useful for learning the pace of the clock. Because the full game contains more threads than can be followed in the available time, practice deciding which detail deserves an action instead of trying to exhaust every option. A short written map will also make the demo’s clue-combination structure easier to understand. What’s actually slowing this PC down? Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away. The full Steam listing gives a planned November 2026 release. A Steam Community announcement dated October 16, 2026 specifies November 10, 2026 and names Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. Availability can vary by platform and region, so check the relevant store listing on or after that date for the version you intend to play. Hillthorn’s distinctive challenge is not simply that it has puzzles; it changes where the information lives. The following comparison describes its stated design axes without assuming a particular comparison title. Follow that checklist consistently and Hillthorn’s wordless presentation becomes readable: observe first, connect second, act third, then update the map. The mystery is designed to emerge from the relationships you uncover, not from a single object that announces the answer.
