It is only a sensible purchase today for a deliberately period-correct or otherwise compatible retro PC: the card has 512MB of memory and DirectX 10.1 support, and a 2008 review cannot establish how any used example will perform or whether it remains available with a dependable warranty.
What the HIS HD 4850 IceQ 4 TurboX is
This is HIS’s 512MB version of the Radeon HD 4850, using a 55nm GPU with 956 million transistors, 800 stream processors, a 256-bit memory interface, and PCIe 2.0. The card supports DirectX 10.1. Overclock3D described HIS’s marketing claim as “The World’s fastest HD4850”; that was a promotional claim, not a universal performance finding. Overclock3D

The review listed a three-year parts-and-labour warranty at the time. That historical warranty term does not establish coverage for a card bought used today. bit-tech Overclock3D
How well the IceQ 4 cooler worked
The cooler occupies two slots and uses a radial fan, heatsink fins, and heatpipes to send warm air out through the rear bracket rather than relying entirely on the case’s internal airflow. In bit-tech’s test system, the card measured about 49°C at idle and approximately 63°C at peak. The reviewer described its fan as effectively inaudible above the other system noise in that setup. These are results from one 2008 sample and test system, not predictions for a decades-old card whose fan, thermal paste, and heatsink condition may have changed.

The rear exhaust is useful in a compact or warm case, but the card still needs an unobstructed rear vent and enough physical room for a dual-slot board. Factory clocks, overclocking and power
HIS set the core to 685MHz and effective memory to 2,200MHz, above the 625MHz core and 1,986MHz effective memory figures bit-tech quoted for a reference HD 4850. In the reviewer’s sample-specific stability testing, the card reached 765MHz core and 2,420MHz effective memory. bit-tech’s chart recorded 176W average idle and 290W loaded system draw with the HIS card installed. The reviewer said its sample used 5W less loaded power than a stock-clocked HD 4850. Was it worth the 2008 price?
At review, bit-tech listed the card at £135 in the UK and $189.99 in the US. The value case was its quieter, rear-exhaust cooling, factory overclock, overclocking headroom in the tested sample, and retail bundle; the drawback was a premium over cheaper custom-cooled HD 4850 cards. Those are historical launch-era comparisons, not current used-market prices. Is it suitable for a retro gaming PC?
It can make sense when the goal is a compatible, period-appropriate PC for games that support DirectX 10.1-era hardware, and the host system has a suitable PCIe slot, case clearance, and power supply. The historical review does not establish compatibility with a particular motherboard, operating system, game, or modern system configuration, so check those requirements individually before buying. Its 512MB of GDDR3 and age make it a poor default choice for a general-purpose modern gaming PC.
For a used or refurbished listing, confirm the exact 512MB IceQ 4 TurboX model, ask for evidence that the fan works quietly under load, and check return terms and any remaining warranty directly with the seller. The 2008 sources do not establish current stock, condition, or present-day warranty coverage.
