Minding Your Own Business is the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop side quest. It becomes available after you complete Fire and Vice, then speak with Penny outside the vacant Hogsmeade shop. You must have 1,500 gold to purchase the property from Cassandra Mason. The quest is a substantial, multi-stage dungeon and puzzle adventure rather than a short errand. Its rewards include the shop itself, an exclusive shopkeeper outfit, a naming choice, and a resolution for Penny.

The story requirement matters more than the suggested level. If the quest marker is missing, check your progress through Fire and Vice before assuming that your character level is the problem.

How to unlock Minding Your Own Business
1. Finish Fire and Vice
Fire and Vice is the progression gate. Walkthroughs describe it as the third Keeper-trial stage, so completing earlier Keeper content alone is not enough. The quest is not presented as an immediately available Hogsmeade activity at the start of a new game.

Once the required story stage is complete, travel back to Hogsmeade and locate the vacant shop. Penny, the house-elf, stands outside it. Speaking with her begins the chain that leads to Cassandra Mason and the purchase agreement.

3. Bring 1,500 gold
Cassandra Mason requires 1,500 gold for the shop. This is a quest cost, not a suggested amount. If you have less than that sum, you can reach the quest giver but cannot complete the purchase step until you raise the funds.
What level should you be?
Published guides use different level labels. One quest database gives a suggested level of 18, while PowerPyx lists level 25. Neither source establishes that the game blocks the quest below one of those numbers. Treat the labels as guidance for expected combat difficulty, and use completion of Fire and Vice as the dependable unlock test.
Step-by-step start
- Complete Fire and Vice.
- Travel to Hogsmeade and go to the vacant shop.
- Talk to Penny outside the building.
- Meet Cassandra Mason when the quest sends you to her.
- Pay 1,500 gold to buy the shop.
- Return to the shop and follow the repair and cleaning objectives.
The early objectives are deliberately ordinary before the quest turns supernatural. Repairing and cleaning the premises is part of the documented progression, not optional preparation. The mysterious chest and the cellar sequence appear only after these setup tasks.

The shop and the chest
After the transaction, the quest has you restore the shop and investigate a mysterious chest. Opening it reveals that the property is more than an abandoned storefront. The chest is the transition from the business setup to the haunted section of the quest.

Fastidio’s cellar
The story then leads below the shop into Fastidio’s labyrinthine cellar. Expect the quest to move through enclosed spaces rather than remain in Hogsmeade’s streets. The cellar combines navigation, environmental puzzles and combat, so the objective flow is not a single fight followed by a reward.
The library and atrium puzzle
One documented stage takes place in a library and atrium area. The puzzle sequence is paired with combat, making it important to read the room and solve the environmental problem instead of treating every objective as a standard battle. Guides list the library/atrium section as one of the quest’s defining set pieces.
The confrontation with Cassandra Mason
Cassandra Mason is involved both in selling the shop and in the later conflict. The quest record describes a confrontation with her after the cellar and puzzle sections. The narrative therefore returns to the person who arranged the purchase rather than ending immediately after the property changes hands.

How to prepare for the cellar and puzzle sections
- Have the purchase money ready before starting. The 1,500-gold requirement is handled at the Cassandra Mason stage, so arriving short on funds interrupts the opening flow.
- Plan for a mixed challenge. The quest combines exploration, puzzles and combat. A character built only for straightforward fights may still need time to inspect the library, atrium and cellar environments.
- Do not judge the quest by its opening chores. Repairing and cleaning the shop are introductory objectives; the unusual content begins with the chest and continues underground.
- Use your level as a difficulty guide, not an unlock rule. The published level suggestions differ, and the story gate is the more consistent requirement.
- Allow uninterrupted play time. The quest moves through several connected stages, and leaving halfway can make it harder to remember which puzzle or combat objective is active.

Choosing the shop name
The naming decision is made from three fixed pairs: Vesters and Venum, Cladwell and Brewster, or Stitches and Draughts. The choice is cosmetic and narrative in nature; the documented quest information does not establish different rewards or gameplay systems for one name over another.
Penny and the elf-sized hat
Penny’s ending depends on what you do with the elf-sized hat. Giving it to her makes her a free elf. Even after that change, she may elect to continue working at the shop, so freedom does not automatically remove her from the property’s story.
Challenge and experience-point caveat
The quest record states that Minding Your Own Business does not count toward the Complete Side/Relationship Quests challenge and does not award XP. That unusual treatment is linked to the quest’s former exclusive-content status. The shop, clothing and narrative outcomes are therefore the principal documented rewards, rather than challenge progress or character experience.

No authoritative source gives a reliable minute-by-minute completion time. The available walkthroughs describe the quest as lengthy and list multiple dungeon, puzzle and combat stages, so the most accurate description is “a substantial side quest.” A fixed number such as 30, 60 or 90 minutes would imply a precision that the published information does not support.

Your actual session length will vary with how quickly you solve the library and atrium puzzles, how much time you spend navigating Fastidio’s cellar, and how efficiently you handle the combat encounters. Someone following a guide may move through the sequence faster than a first-time player exploring it unaided. Those variables are why a qualitative estimate is more useful than an unsupported timer.

The quest was initially marketed as PlayStation-exclusive content. GameSpot reported on June 6, 2024 that the summer update expanded it to all players. The official Hogwarts Legacy site lists the game on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch, so current players on those platforms should not treat older “PlayStation only” guides as a present-day requirement.
An older save, an unupdated installation or a guide written before the summer update can explain why you encounter outdated platform language. The relevant distinction is the game’s update state, not a permanent platform restriction.
Troubleshooting the quest marker
Penny is not offering the quest
- Confirm that Fire and Vice is complete rather than merely active.
- Return to the vacant shop in Hogsmeade and speak directly with Penny.
- Check that the game has installed the update that removed the former PlayStation exclusivity.
The purchase cannot be completed
Check your gold total. Cassandra Mason’s price is 1,500 gold, and the quest cannot progress through the purchase step without it.

Your level is below a guide’s number
A level 18 recommendation and a level 25 recommendation are both documented. Neither should be read as a universal lock. If the story gate is complete and Penny is present, the remaining question is whether you are comfortable with the cellar’s combat and puzzle sequence.
You expected XP or challenge progress
That expectation does not match the quest record. This quest is specifically listed as awarding no XP and not counting toward the Complete Side/Relationship Quests challenge, despite granting the shop and clothing rewards.
Should you start it immediately?
Start once you have completed the story gate, collected 1,500 gold and are ready for a self-contained sequence that shifts from shop restoration to a haunted underground labyrinth. Players focused on challenge completion or XP should know in advance that this quest does not advance those categories. Players who want ownership of a Hogsmeade shop, its named clothing rewards and Penny’s optional ending will find those outcomes at the end of the full cellar, puzzle and confrontation sequence.
