There is no evidence-based universal winner. Hogwarts Legacy offers a Fidelity mode targeting 30 frames per second and a Performance mode targeting 60 fps on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Those are developer targets, not promises of a locked frame rate in every scene. The better version depends on whether you value image quality, smoother motion, ray tracing, a supported high-refresh display, or access to a PS5 Pro.

Portkey Games Support describes multiple graphics modes for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Its published summary says the most common options are Fidelity mode, which targets 30 fps, and Performance mode, which targets 60 fps. The wording matters: a target is an intended operating point, not a measured guarantee that the game never drops below it.
Both platform families also support graphics modes for displays with variable refresh rate (VRR). Whether you can select and use a particular mode therefore depends partly on the television or monitor connected to the console. Console generation, display capability and in-game settings all belong in the comparison.

How Fidelity and Performance modes differ
Fidelity mode: image quality first
Fidelity mode aims at 30 fps. In return for the lower frame-rate target, it is intended to prioritize visual quality. The mode is the natural choice for players who prefer a more detailed, cinematic presentation and do not mind slower camera motion than a 60-fps mode. Because 30 fps is a target rather than a lock, the practical result can still vary by scene, patch and console configuration.
Performance mode: motion first
Performance mode targets 60 fps on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A 60-fps target generally makes camera turns, combat inputs and traversal feel more responsive than a 30-fps target, but the label alone does not prove that the game sustains 60 fps everywhere. Compare the same demanding areas and the same display settings if smoothness is your deciding factor.

Ray tracing and the additional PlayStation modes
The PlayStation 5 documentation explicitly lists Fidelity with ray tracing, Balanced and HFR Performance alongside the two common modes. Balanced and HFR Performance require supported output devices, so they are not universal choices for every PS5 owner. Ray tracing is likewise a separate choice from ordinary Fidelity; selecting it can change the visual presentation and the performance trade-off.

The cited Xbox summary confirms multiple modes but does not enumerate the complete Xbox menu in the material available here. It is therefore unsafe to claim exact one-to-one parity between every PlayStation label and every Xbox label. If a specific Xbox option matters to you, check the current in-game menu on your console rather than assuming that a similarly named PlayStation mode exists.
Why your television or monitor can change the answer
Portkey Games identifies VRR-compatible display modes on both console families. VRR allows a compatible screen to adjust its refresh timing to the console output, which can make variable frame delivery appear smoother than it would on a fixed-refresh display. It does not turn a 30-fps target into 60 fps, and it does not establish that one console has higher performance.
Before comparing platforms, verify that the display supports the mode you intend to use. The PlayStation documentation specifically limits Balanced and HFR Performance to supported output devices. A player with an ordinary 60-Hz screen may have fewer useful choices than a player with a compatible high-refresh, VRR-capable display, even when both own the same console model.

PSSR is part of the PS5 Pro presentation described by the update; it is not a feature that should be assumed on the base PS5 or on Xbox Series hardware. The documented improvements also apply to specified modes, not automatically to every possible setting. Consequently, a PS5 Pro comparison is a separate question from a base-PS5-versus-Xbox comparison.

If you are deciding between a PS5 Pro and an Xbox Series console, you are evaluating hardware as well as platform software. It would be misleading to use the PS5 Pro update as evidence that the base PS5 or every PlayStation version is visually ahead of Xbox.
A practical way to compare the two versions
No verified measurement in the available material establishes a consistent Xbox or PlayStation winner. You can still make a disciplined personal comparison if both versions are available to you.

- Confirm the display. Note whether the same screen supports VRR and any output requirement for Balanced or HFR Performance. If the screens differ, record that difference instead of attributing every visual change to the console.
- Install the same game update. Version changes can alter image quality, frame pacing or available options. An older video is not automatically a measurement of the current build.
- Select equivalent priorities. Start with Fidelity on both consoles, then repeat with Performance. If one system offers an extra mode, list it as an extra option rather than pretending it is an identical comparison.
- Use repeatable scenes. Test a busy outdoor area, a combat encounter and a camera pan through a detailed interior. Keep the route and activity as similar as practical.
- Observe consistency, not a single impression. Look for sustained judder, uneven camera motion or visible resolution changes over several minutes. A short moment that feels smooth does not prove a locked frame rate.
- Record the settings and result. Note console, mode, display, VRR state and game version. This prevents a later conclusion from mixing different configurations.
This process produces a useful answer for your equipment and preferences without turning an observation into a universal benchmark. If you need numerical frame-time or resolution claims, use a directly accessible technical analysis of the same game build and state its test conditions.

That scope shows how many combinations can matter, but the detailed analysis was not accessible in the material used for this article. Its measured outcomes therefore cannot be quoted as independently verified evidence that Xbox or PlayStation wins.
The date also matters. Hogwarts Legacy has received updates, and the PS5 Pro update was published later, on November 4, 2024. A 2023 comparison can describe the versions and patches tested at that time; it should not be presented as a current measurement of every 2026 console configuration.
Which platform should you buy?
Choose based on the mode you will actually use
If your priority is a 60-fps-style presentation, both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have an official Performance target. If you prefer a 30-fps cinematic presentation, both have an official Fidelity target. Since neither target guarantees identical frame pacing in every scene, the label alone should not decide the purchase.

Choose Xbox when it fits your existing setup
The official material confirms the same common 30-fps Fidelity target, 60-fps Performance target and VRR-supported modes for Xbox Series X|S. It does not establish a measured disadvantage. If you already own an Xbox Series console and compatible display, there is no evidence here that you must switch platforms to obtain the intended performance modes.
Do not confuse edition availability with performance proof
Buy the edition made for your actual console generation and check the current store listing before purchasing. The evidence does not support claiming that the Xbox edition or PlayStation edition is inherently superior. Your console model, selected mode, display and game version determine the experience more directly than the platform name on the box.
The bottom line for Hogwarts Legacy performance
For base PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the documented feature set is broadly comparable at the headline level: Fidelity targets 30 fps, Performance targets 60 fps, and VRR-compatible modes are supported. PlayStation has additional explicitly documented modes and a separate PS5 Pro update with PSSR-related sharpness and dynamic-resolution improvements. None of those facts proves a universal frame-rate winner. Match the hardware, mode, display and game update, then choose the platform whose available options fit the way you play.
