Yes—Hogwarts Legacy was a major commercial success. Warner Bros. Games reported more than 12 million copies and $850 million in worldwide sales during the game’s first two weeks, then announced that worldwide unit sales had passed 40 million by December 17, 2025. Those figures show enormous demand and revenue generation, but they do not disclose the game’s lifetime net profit. Development, marketing, platform fees, distribution terms, discounts and regional pricing all sit between copies sold and money retained by the publisher.
The short answer: Hogwarts Legacy clearly made money, but its exact profit is not public
In ordinary usage, “Did Hogwarts Legacy make money?” has a straightforward answer: yes. The game sold at a scale large enough to become one of Warner Bros. Games’ most important recent releases. The publisher’s launch announcement recorded more than 12 million units and $850 million in worldwide sales in the first two weeks after release. A later Warner Bros. Games announcement said the game had sold more than 40 million units worldwide by December 17, 2025.

Those are not interchangeable measurements. The $850 million figure is a publisher-reported sales amount for a defined two-week launch period. The 40-million figure is a unit milestone covering the game’s longer commercial life across multiple platforms. Neither announcement states Hogwarts Legacy’s lifetime revenue, operating income or net profit. Warner Bros. Discovery’s public filings show that the title materially improved broader games results, but they do not provide a standalone income statement for the game.

What Warner Bros. Games reported at launch
More than 12 million units in two weeks
On February 23, 2023, Warner Bros. Games said Hogwarts Legacy had sold more than 12 million units and generated $850 million in worldwide sales during its first two weeks. The initial release covered PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. This was a launch-period announcement, not a forecast and not a lifetime total.
The two numbers describe different aspects of the same performance. “More than 12 million units” counts copies sold. “$850 million in worldwide sales” reports the value of sales over that two-week period as stated by the publisher. The announcement does not say that every copy sold at the standard retail price, nor does it explain the split between digital purchases, physical sales, editions, territories or platforms.
Warner Bros. Games president David Haddad described the response as a source of excitement and pride, including among players new to games and critics worldwide. His published Spanish statement reads: “Estamos muy emocionados y orgullosos de ver la respuesta de los jugadores de Hogwarts Legacy, tanto de los aficionados que se inician en los juegos como de los críticos de todo el mundo.” That comment is a reaction to reception, not a disclosure of profit or costs.
Why the launch figure was so significant
A $850 million sales figure in fourteen days indicates that Hogwarts Legacy was not merely a successful licensed release; it was a major event for Warner Bros. Games. The early performance also gave the company a strong comparison point for later reporting periods. However, a large launch does not by itself reveal the break-even point. A game with high sales can still have a lower-than-expected margin if development, marketing, licensing and distribution expenses are unusually high.

The 40-million milestone: a unit figure, not a dollar total
On December 17, 2025, Warner Bros. Games announced that Hogwarts Legacy had sold more than 40 million units worldwide. The announcement listed PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. This milestone demonstrates that the game continued selling well after its initial release and expanded its addressable audience as additional versions arrived.
It is important not to convert 40 million units into a guessed revenue number. The announcement did not attach a corresponding dollar amount. Copies can sell at different prices by region and platform, and the total can include launch editions, deluxe editions, later discounts and other mixes that are not itemized publicly. Platform holders and retailers also retain portions of transaction value under their commercial agreements. Without those details, multiplying 40 million by a list price would create a number that looks precise but is not supported by the announcement.

What Warner Bros. Discovery’s financial filings tell us
The 2023 annual filing
Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2023 Form 10-K said that higher games revenue was partly due to Hogwarts Legacy. The filing also noted higher games marketing expense supporting the release. This is useful confirmation that the game was large enough to affect the parent company’s reported results, while also showing why revenue cannot be treated as profit: the company incurred substantial costs to market and release it.
A corporate filing groups activities into reporting segments and periods. It does not necessarily identify every title’s development budget, marketing allocation, platform deductions or licensing arrangements. The filing therefore supports a statement about material contribution to Warner Bros. Discovery’s games business, not a title-level return-on-investment calculation.

The 2024 comparison
In its February 27, 2025 earnings release covering the fourth quarter and full year of 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery attributed lower content revenue in part to the exceptionally strong prior-year performance associated with Hogwarts Legacy. The company also said Q4 2024 games revenue was lower partly because the prior-year comparison benefited from Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1. The reported Q4 games decline was 29% excluding foreign-exchange effects.
That 29% figure belongs to Warner Bros. Discovery’s games segment, not to Hogwarts Legacy. It does not mean the game lost 29% of its sales, nor does it isolate the title’s contribution. It shows how a blockbuster release can make the following year look weaker when the comparison period includes an unusually strong launch.
Sales, revenue and profit are different numbers
Readers often use “made” to mean profit, while publishers frequently announce sales or units. Keeping the terms separate prevents the most common misunderstanding.

A unit is a copy sold. The more-than-40-million announcement is a unit count. It says nothing by itself about the price paid for each copy or the amount ultimately retained after commercial deductions.

Sales value or revenue
The $850 million announcement is a sales figure for the first two weeks worldwide, as reported by Warner Bros. Games. It is not labeled as net income. Depending on the company’s accounting presentation, “sales” may be discussed before certain deductions that affect the amount recognized in financial statements. The announcement does not provide enough detail to reconstruct a title-level accounting schedule.
Profit
Profit is what remains after applicable costs and expenses. For a large game, those can include years of development payroll and technology, voice and performance work, testing, localization, physical manufacturing, marketing, licensing or brand-related payments, customer support, platform fees, retailer margins, refunds and ongoing patches. Public announcements cited for Hogwarts Legacy do not provide the complete cost basis needed to calculate net profit.

Using a standard edition’s list price and multiplying it by 40 million would overstate certainty for several reasons:

- Prices vary by territory. A copy sold in one currency market may have a different price from a copy sold elsewhere.
- Discounting changes realized price. Retail promotions, seasonal sales and later catalogue pricing mean many copies do not sell at launch list price.
- Editions have different prices. Standard, deluxe and bundled editions can carry different contents and prices.
- Platform economics differ. Console and PC storefront agreements, physical retailers and distributors each affect the amount that reaches the publisher.
- The unit milestone is cumulative. It spans releases over time, not one uniform transaction at one date.
- Costs are not visible in the milestone. Even a reliable gross-sales estimate would not reveal development, marketing or other expenses.
These variables do not weaken the conclusion that the game was commercially successful. They only prevent an honest claim that the public figures prove a particular dollar profit.

How the release timeline helps explain the sales
Initial current-generation and PC launch
The February 2023 announcement covered PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Concentrating the first launch on those systems allowed the game to reach players with hardware capable of supporting its open-world design while creating a clear opening sales window.
Expansion to additional platforms
The later 40-million milestone includes PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the original platforms. Each additional version broadened the potential audience and extended the product’s commercial life. The milestone should therefore be read as the result of a continuing, multi-platform release strategy rather than as a second launch-period revenue disclosure.
Product context
Warner Bros. Games describes Hogwarts Legacy as an open-world action role-playing game set in the Wizarding World during the 1800s. It was published under the Portkey Games label and developed by Avalanche Software. Its setting, recognizable fiction and availability across seven listed platforms help explain why demand could persist beyond the initial release window, but they do not supply a public cost or profit figure.
A careful way to answer “How much money did Hogwarts Legacy make?”
If the question is asking for a documented number, the strongest answer is the launch-period figure: Warner Bros. Games reported $850 million in worldwide sales during the first two weeks after launch. If the question is asking about total commercial reach, the strongest answer is more than 40 million units sold worldwide by December 17, 2025.
If the question means lifetime revenue, the public announcements cited here do not provide a total. If it means lifetime net profit, no standalone title-level figure is established. The correct wording is therefore conditional:
- Documented launch sales: more than $850 million worldwide in the first two weeks, according to Warner Bros. Games.
- Documented launch units: more than 12 million in that same two-week period.
- Documented cumulative units: more than 40 million worldwide by December 17, 2025.
- Documented standalone lifetime profit: not disclosed in the cited public materials.
What can be concluded with confidence
Three conclusions fit all of the available figures without stretching them. First, Hogwarts Legacy was a blockbuster commercial release: its first two weeks produced more than 12 million units and $850 million in reported worldwide sales. Second, demand remained substantial over time, with the publisher later reporting more than 40 million units sold across current- and previous-generation consoles, Nintendo Switch systems and PC. Third, Warner Bros. Discovery’s filings confirm that the title materially influenced company games and content comparisons.
The missing piece is a title-specific profit-and-loss statement. Until Warner Bros. Games or Warner Bros. Discovery publishes development and marketing costs, recognized revenue, platform deductions and the accounting basis for the title, any exact lifetime profit number would be an estimate rather than a reported fact.
