If your Hogwarts Legacy save is missing from the in-game list on PC, first protect the existing save folder, then try WB Games’ list-file fix: close the game and launcher, remove SaveGameList.sav from the correct Steam or Epic folder, and relaunch. This can address a missing list entry; it cannot restore save data or characters that were deleted, overwritten, or corrupted.
First determine what is missing
A missing entry in the game’s save list is not necessarily the same as a missing or damaged character save. The distinction matters: WB Games documents a procedure for a list-file problem, but not a repair for corrupted .sav contents.
- The save entry is missing, but save files may remain: try the
SaveGameList.savprocedure below. - The relevant character or save files are absent: look for an intact local, cloud, or separate backup copy. The list-file procedure will not recreate deleted files.
- The game reports a cloud conflict: compare the local and cloud timestamps before choosing a version, so you do not overwrite the progress you want to keep.
Back up the PC save folder before changing files
Before troubleshooting, copy the whole SaveGames folder somewhere else, such as another drive or a USB drive. This is a precaution, not a repair: it preserves a manual copy in case later changes go wrong. Steam notes that its installation backup may not include third-party game saves, which can be stored separately and may need separate copying: Steam Backup and Restore.
WB Games lists different folder paths for Steam and Epic Games Store. Use the path for the storefront where you play; do not substitute one for the other. The support FAQ also says both PC versions support cloud saving: Hogwarts Legacy FAQ.

Fix a missing save-list entry on PC
WB Games’ documented fix is to remove the list file so the game can address the save-list issue when it is launched again. Follow these steps for the storefront you use: WB Games support: previous save data no longer appears in the list.
- Close Hogwarts Legacy and its launcher completely. Exit the game, then close Steam or Epic Games Launcher.
- Open the correct save folder. In Windows File Explorer, enter the Steam or Epic path from the table above in the address bar and press Enter.
- Open the profile folder. Open the numbered folder for Steam or the alphanumeric folder for Epic Games Store, as described by WB Games.
- Remove only
SaveGameList.sav. Do not delete the other.savfiles. - Reopen the launcher and game. Check whether your existing save entries now appear.
WB Games explicitly cautions that this does not recover a character or save data you manually deleted. If the actual save files are missing, overwritten, or unreadable, deleting the list file is not a recovery method.

Resolve a Steam Cloud conflict carefully
A Steam Cloud conflict means the local files and cloud files differ, typically because changes were made in two places without syncing. Steam’s guidance is to compare the timestamps shown in the conflict prompt and choose the copy that matches the progress you want to retain. If the old computer is still available, Steam suggests trying to sync from it first. See Steam’s guidance for cloud sync conflicts.
Steam cautions that recovering lost saves is unlikely and that it cannot choose or resolve a conflict for you. Do not assume the newest timestamp is automatically the right choice if you know the other copy contains the progress you need. These conflict steps are Steam-specific, not instructions for Epic Games Store or consoles.

What to do if a save is deleted or corrupted
If the character’s actual save file is gone or will not load, check whether another intact copy exists in the local folder, cloud storage, or a separate backup you made. Preserve that copy before testing anything that could sync or overwrite files. The official sources cited here do not document a Hogwarts Legacy-specific way to repair corrupted .sav contents, so the list-file fix should not be treated as such a repair.
Steam Deck and console notes
Steam Deck
WB Games recommends closing Hogwarts Legacy between Steam Deck play sessions so cloud data has time to upload. The Hogwarts Legacy FAQ states that Steam Cloud can store up to 1.85 GB of the game’s save data; that is a platform FAQ detail and may change.

Console players should use the relevant PlayStation or Xbox saved-data and cloud-support guidance rather than trying PC folder instructions.
