If your Hogwarts Legacy save is missing or will not load, first check that you are using the same console or PC account where you created it, then compare any local save with an available cloud backup before replacing either copy. Recovery and transfer options differ by platform, and a transfer feature does not repair a corrupted save.
Before changing anything, check the account and available copies
- Sign in to the console or PC account used when the save was created, and make sure the correct console user is selected. On Switch, Nintendo says deleting a user also deletes its associated save data, which cannot be recovered. Nintendo’s save-data guidance explains the platform’s checks.
- Look for both a local save and a cloud backup, if your platform and account support one. Compare their timestamps before downloading or overwriting anything. Nintendo warns that overwritten save data cannot be recovered.
- Do not assume that a save transfer is a recovery method: transfer instructions move an existing save between consoles or generations; they do not promise to restore a missing or corrupt file.
There is no published official success rate or incidence figure for this specific Hogwarts Legacy issue, so reports of missing saves do not establish how common it is or guarantee a particular fix.
Fixes and recovery checks by platform
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
- Confirm the correct user is selected. If the user associated with the save was deleted, Nintendo says the user’s save data is deleted and cannot be recovered.
- Update the Switch system and Hogwarts Legacy. If both are current, restart the console and use the system’s corrupt-data check for the game. These are among Nintendo’s recommended checks for missing or unreadable save data: Nintendo Switch save troubleshooting.
- To inspect cloud and console copies, open System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud Backup, select the relevant user and game, and compare the latest cloud-backup and console-save timestamps. Follow Nintendo’s instructions to back up the newer console copy or download the newer cloud copy. Do not overwrite the only copy you may need.
- Cloud recovery requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a supported game. Nintendo says that after a membership expires, existing backups can be accessed again if the player resubscribes within 180 days; this is a service-policy window, not a recovery guarantee.
For a Switch-to-Switch 2 move, WB Games documents transferring a save through the software menu or downloading a cloud backup from the game’s Save Data Cloud menu. The captured WB guide is in Portuguese, so menu wording may differ in your interface language. WB says a save made on Switch 2 cannot be transferred back to the original Switch; continuing on Switch resumes from before the transfer. WB Games’ Switch transfer guide.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
WB Games says a Hogwarts Legacy PS4 save can be transferred to PS5. Its documented cloud route uploads the save from the PS4 game tile’s saved-data menu to PlayStation Plus online storage, then downloads the chosen PS4 save on PS5 and confirms the import in the game. The online-storage route requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription; WB also documents USB storage as an alternative for this PS4-to-PS5 transfer when you do not have an active subscription.

WB says PS5 saves cannot be transferred back to PS4. These are generation-transfer steps, not a guarantee that a missing or unreadable save can be restored. See WB Games’ console transfer guide.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
WB Games says saves can be used across Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S when the console is online and signed in to the account where the save was created. Check for the file under Manage game and add-ons → Saved data. If it is absent, verify the signed-in account and connection before concluding the save is gone. The guide describes save availability across Xbox consoles; it does not promise repair of a corrupted file. WB Games’ console transfer guide.

PC
The WB support landing page links to Portkey Games support, but no official PC-specific procedure for recovering a missing Hogwarts Legacy save was located. You can consult WB Games Support for available help.
Community posts describe copying or renaming local save folders, but those reports are anecdotal and may not apply to the current game version. If you investigate local files, make a separate copy of any existing save folder before changing it. Copying or renaming cannot guarantee recovery of a missing, overwritten, or corrupted save; it is not an official fix.

When the save still will not appear or load
- Recheck the account or user and the save’s timestamps; a different profile or a newer cloud/local copy can explain why the expected progress is not appearing.
- Avoid starting over or downloading a backup until you know which copy is newer. Replacing the wrong copy can remove the one you hoped to recover.
- If the available copy fails to load after the platform’s recommended checks, contact WB Games Support with your platform, account/user context, and the checks already completed. The available guidance does not establish that support can restore a lost or corrupted save.
