The studio has not provided an exact date, and the available announcements do not confirm that the expansion has released. It is described as a nautical adventure with new areas, bosses, tools, and more.
When is the Silksong expansion coming out?
Team Cherry’s December 2025 announcement set Sea of Sorrow for 2026, but did not give a day or month. The studio said the expansion was already well underway and that it would share more information shortly before release. That announcement establishes the studio’s stated plan, not a confirmed current schedule or proof of release. Team Cherry’s announcement is the primary source for the expansion’s name and window.
What is Sea of Sorrow?
Team Cherry calls Sea of Sorrow the first major expansion for Silksong. It is nautically themed and continues Hornet’s adventures with new areas, bosses, tools, and more. The studio announced that it would be free for all players; it did not announce a separate paid edition.
Why did Team Cherry previously avoid giving a date?
The expansion announcement followed a Bloomberg interview reported by Engadget and GameSpot. In that interview, co-founder Ari Gibson said the team was still working on the game and pursuing ideas that excited them. GameSpot quoted him saying, “There will be new stuff coming in a reasonable timeframe and not seven years from now.” He also cautioned against overpromising while plans were vague. Co-founder William Pellen said they might start discussing the work more soon, but might not give a timeframe.

The later Sea of Sorrow post moved the story beyond that earlier uncertainty: Team Cherry publicly named an expansion and announced a year, while still withholding an exact date.
Is Steel Assassin Sharpe in the expansion?
Not confirmed. In the interview, Gibson said Sharpe was “just waiting in the wings” and that the team was excited to reintroduce the character. He described Sharpe and companions as a small group of content set aside while the base game grew, which still needed polish. Team Cherry’s official Sea of Sorrow announcement does not name Sharpe, so the interview tease should not be treated as confirmation that the character will appear in this expansion.

What else did Team Cherry announce?
In its December 2025 holiday post, Team Cherry said Silksong had passed seven million purchasers, with millions more playing through Xbox Game Pass. That is the studio’s own figure, not an independently audited total. The post also announced mini-figurines depicting Hornet, her friends, and rivals, prepared with Alex Colvin of Studio Tyto and Fangamer; it linked to Fangamer’s Hollow Knight collection. The announcement does not establish current stock or purchasing terms.
Silksong launched on September 4, 2025, and Team Cherry announced availability across platforms. For the expansion, however, the useful confirmed details remain its announced free status, broad content description, and planned 2026 window—not an exact release date.
