Homeworld Remastered Collection Review: Is It Worth Playing?

Homeworld Remastered Collection bundles two acclaimed space-strategy campaigns and their classic editions, but Homeworld 1's changed mechanics and the missing Cataclysm/Emergence are worth knowing before you play.

Verdict: Homeworld Remastered Collection is a compelling way to play two distinctive space-strategy campaigns, especially if atmosphere, soundtrack, and updated presentation matter to you. Its main reservation is fidelity: Homeworld 1 Remastered inherits some mechanics from Homeworld 2 that can feel unlike the original. The package also includes classic editions, giving players a way to compare. It does not include Homeworld: Cataclysm/Emergence.

What is included in Homeworld Remastered Collection?

Steam lists Homeworld Remastered Edition, Homeworld 2 Remastered Edition, classic editions of both games, and multiplayer access. The store describes the campaigns as spanning more than 30 single-player missions and lists more than 100 ships. Those are publisher-listed features, not independent measurements.

The collection’s scope has one notable gap: it does not include Homeworld: Cataclysm, also known as Emergence. GameSpot explicitly notes the omission in its review.

What do reviews say about it?

GameSpot rated the collection 8/10 in 2015. Reviewer Kevin VanOrd praised its lonely-space atmosphere, varied real-time battles, soundtrack, and gradual introduction of mechanics. He also pointed to a few weak missions and changes that do not always improve the original. VanOrd completed both campaigns and played skirmishes for his review, estimating about 16 hours for those two campaigns in his playthrough; that is not a promised completion time for every player.

#1 Best Overall
Homeworld Remastered Collection [Online Game Code]
  • Bonus archival versions of Homeworld Classic and Homeworld 2 classic, preserving the purest form of the original releases with compatibility for modern operating systems
  • Build and battle with more than 100 space ships
  • Updated high-res textures and models
  • New graphical effects
  • Support for HD, UHD, and 4K resolutions

PC Gamer’s strategy-game roundup likewise highlights the series’ three-dimensional strategy, atmosphere, and sound design, and says the remasters update the art, textures, audio, and interface while retaining the originals’ spirit. That is editorial assessment, not a guarantee of technical compatibility on a particular PC or Mac.

How does Remastered compare with Classic?

The remastered editions prioritize refreshed presentation. Steam lists updated textures and models, HD/UHD/4K support, remastered audio, recreated cinematics, and mod support. The classic editions are included for players who would rather experience the earlier versions. Steam’s product description says the collection brings the games to modern players and operating systems using updated graphics rendering, a remastered score, and new high-fidelity voice recordings by the original actors.

For Homeworld 1 in particular, choosing Remastered is not simply a choice between old and new visuals. GameSpot describes changes associated with Homeworld 2—including pathing, projectile damage, resource collection, and docking—that affect how the first game’s mechanics feel. VanOrd summarized the issue this way: “This is the original Homeworld viewed through the filter of Homeworld 2, which implemented changes to pathing and projectile damage that don’t always feel logical in the earlier game.”

  • Choose Remastered if updated visuals and audio are your priority and you are comfortable with changes to the first game’s mechanics.
  • Try Classic if you want to compare the older presentation and feel, particularly when you already know the original Homeworld.

Is it better for the campaigns or multiplayer?

The clearest case for the collection is its solo content: it bundles two campaigns, each built around fleet decisions, formations, and three-dimensional battles. Steam lists multiplayer for up to eight players across 23 maps, but those store-listed figures do not establish how active matchmaking is today or guarantee a particular multiplayer experience.

Steam lists PC and Mac versions. Its page says Mac multiplayer is limited to Mac-to-Mac play and does not support cross-platform play. The listed minimum requirements are legacy specifications, so check the current Steam listing and compatibility information for your own hardware rather than treating those old requirements as proof that the game will run on a modern system.

What do Steam player reviews show?

On 2026-10-08, Steam displayed English-language reviews as Very Positive: 87% of 7,819 reviews. Its recent-review indicator was Mixed: 64% of 34 reviews in the last 30 days, as displayed on that same date. These are different, time-sensitive snapshots; they should not be combined with GameSpot’s critic score or treated as evidence of why recent reviewers were less positive.

Should you buy Homeworld Remastered Collection?

It is a strong fit if you want the Homeworld and Homeworld 2 campaigns in one collection, value the remastered presentation, or want both remastered and classic editions available. It is a less straightforward pick if preserving Homeworld 1’s original mechanics is essential, or if you expect Cataclysm/Emergence to be included. Before buying for multiplayer, account for the Mac platform restriction and check current compatibility for your system.
