Hong Kong 2097, reported as a sequel to the controversial SNES bootleg Hong Kong 97, was reportedly turned away by Steam and had its store page retired. A December 23, 2025 report attributed the decision to “third-party content” and quoted co-developer KaniPro Games saying the game was not cancelled. The studio was then exploring itch.io, GOG, and DLsite, but those were plans—not confirmed releases. Its current availability has not been established.
What is Hong Kong 2097?
Hong Kong 2097 is described in a December 23, 2025 report as an upcoming sequel to Hong Kong 97, an infamous Super Nintendo bootleg. The original was a shoot-’em-up framed as political commentary on the anticipated 1997 handover of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China.

The report characterizes the original as using absurd and offensive features and imagery to parody the games industry. That reputation belongs to the original’s deliberately provocative satire; it is not a neutral content rating for the sequel.
Why was the sequel removed from Steam?
The report says KaniPro Games told the outlet that Steam declined to ship Hong Kong 2097 and retired its store page, citing “third-party content.” That is the reported explanation, relayed by a secondary outlet; no direct statement from Valve was verified. The report does not establish that payment processors caused this particular decision, or that Steam’s action represents a general ban on controversial games.

Was Hong Kong 2097 cancelled?
No cancellation was reported. KaniPro Games was quoted as saying: “The game is NOT cancelled. We’re already looking into Itch, GOG and DLsite.” The statement indicates the team was exploring other outlets at the time; it does not confirm distribution agreements or a release date.
Where can you play it now?
The December 2025 report does not establish a current release or active listing on itch.io, GOG, DLsite, or another platform. Because the cited announcement is from 2025, it cannot by itself confirm the game’s status in 2026. Readers should check for a current listing from the developer or a platform before assuming the game is available.
Can you still buy the original Hong Kong 97?
The report raises interest in physical SNES cartridges, but does not verify a current listing, a cartridge’s authenticity, or compatibility. Treat any offer as unconfirmed until the seller identifies what is being sold and provides enough information to assess the item and whether it will work with your hardware.
