Build around a coherent damage plan, place each character where their mode-specific abilities work, and spend Gold Coins when a recruit or promotion meaningfully improves the team. Saving for interest can help, but it is not worth letting a run collapse.
How Currency Wars works
Currency Wars uses its own roster and team-building system rather than simply asking you to bring your regular four-character party. You recruit and improve characters during a run, then arrange them in on-field and off-field areas. The on-field area forms the active combat squad; off-field characters provide support. Some characters have abilities specific to Currency Wars, and placing one outside its designated position can disable that ability.
A run begins with a random selection of characters. Between battles, a management screen lets you spend or retain Gold Coins as you build the roster. Prydwen’s Currency Wars mechanics guide describes a Squad HP pool: failing to clear stages within their requirements costs HP, and the run ends when that pool reaches zero.
How to build a strong team
Start with the draft you actually have
Choose a main damage plan from the characters offered, then look for support units and Bond effects that reinforce it. A roster full of disconnected damage dealers can be weaker than a focused team with the right enabler, defensive support or Bond threshold. Because the pool and shop options vary, treat a lineup as a plan to adapt—not a fixed recipe to force into every run.

Check roles and placement
Read each character’s role marker and Currency Wars ability text before placing them. Some units are intended for on-field, some for off-field, and some can work in either area. Positioning is not cosmetic: an incompatible assignment may switch off a unique ability that contributes to the team’s plan.
Draft for Bonds as well as individual strength
Bonds are a core part of team construction. Consider whether the characters currently available can reach a useful Bond threshold and whether its payoff supports your chosen damage plan. A strong individual recruit may be less valuable than the missing piece that completes a useful Bond or makes your existing carry work better.
HoYoverse’s Strategy Compendium announcement, published November 5, 2025, says players can filter strategies by characters and Bonds. It also describes favoriting or copying strategy codes and viewing and applying them through the in-game Currency Wars strategy interface. Use these as examples and starting points; a copied strategy is not a guarantee of the best team for a different draft or season.

Use upgrades when they change the board
Combining copies raises a character’s star rating and strengthens combat abilities. Before promoting a unit, compare that improvement with the value of adding a useful recruit. Prioritize a carry or support whose promotion addresses the team’s current weakness instead of pursuing duplicates automatically.

Who are the best Currency Wars characters?
The most useful character is the one that fits your active pool, position, Bond plan and upgrade opportunities. There is no substantiated universal ranking that holds across drafts and patches. Judge candidates by these factors:
- Role fit: Does the character function in the on-field or off-field position you need?
- Bond access: Can the characters in this run activate a useful Bond, and does it support your chosen plan?
- Draft reliability: Can you complete the strategy with the pool and shop options actually appearing?
- Upgrade value: Would a duplicate make a key unit substantially more useful than buying another role or synergy piece?
- Season eligibility: Is the character in the active pool, and are any required unlocks or advisor conditions met?
HSRZone’s guide, updated September 27, 2026, presents Aglaea Energy, Break and Phainon as example templates while cautioning against assuming one lineup is strongest in every patch. Treat those as conditional examples, not an independently tested tier list. HoYoverse’s Version 4.2 update confirms an expansion and the addition of the Elation Bond, but does not rank the roster. Check the active in-game pool before committing to a season-specific plan.

When should you spend or save Gold Coins?
In Standard Gambit, Prydwen reports that unspent coins earn one Gold Coin of interest per ten coins at battle end, capped at five coins per battle. That makes saving a useful economy tool, not a rule to follow at any cost: if a recruit or upgrade can stabilize a failing team, spending can be more valuable than reaching the interest cap.
Use the interest threshold as a planning reference in Standard Gambit, then weigh it against the next battle’s needs. If damage is short, add or improve a damage source; if the team is failing to survive or activate its plan, prioritize the missing support or synergy piece. Check the active mode’s rules before relying on this calculation: Overclock and investment modifiers can change the economics.

How to manage battles and recover from a bad run
Use each battle result to diagnose the problem rather than assuming every failure calls for more damage. Check whether the team lacked damage, support, correct positioning or the tools to handle a boss mechanic. Currency Wars characters do not necessarily function exactly as they do in ordinary combat, so judge them by their mode-specific text and role.

- Not clearing the stage requirement: Identify whether the team is losing time to low damage, weak support or a misplaced character.
- Squad HP falling: Make the next purchase or promotion address the reason the previous battle failed; avoid spending on a disconnected unit.
- A key ability is missing: Recheck the character’s role marker and placement.
- A Bond plan is incomplete: Decide whether the available recruits can still reach the threshold or whether the run needs a different focus.
Where to find strategies and current rewards
The Strategy Compendium is the official in-game resource for browsing example strategies by characters and Bonds, then applying a strategy code. It can help you see how a plan is assembled, but your run’s available characters and shop still determine whether that plan is practical.
Rewards and points also need a version check. HoYoverse’s Version 4.2 “So Laughed the Masses” update details state that Currency Wars Points and Simulated Universe Points were merged. Older pages that describe a separate biweekly Currency Wars points reset are outdated on that point. For the current reward track, deadlines and active-season details, check the in-game interface and the latest official notice rather than relying on an older schedule.
