Community guides usually place the beginning of the noticeable increase around pull 74, continuing until the 90-Warp guarantee. However, HoYoverse does not publish an official soft-pity threshold or the probability assigned to each pull. The documented rules are the base rates and hard guarantees, so “soft pity at 74” is a useful community description, not a confirmed rule in the game’s support documentation.
What “soft pity” means in Honkai: Star Rail
In a gacha system, pity is the protection that makes a rare drop increasingly likely—or eventually certain—after a run of unsuccessful pulls. Hard pity is the guaranteed maximum number of Warps before the specified rarity appears. Soft pity is the suspected period before that maximum when the chance rises above the ordinary base rate.

For example, a player who has made many Character Event Warps without receiving a 5-star may be in the community-described soft-pity window. The next Warp is not automatically a 5-star, and the game does not display a soft-pity meter. If the 5-star arrives early, the relevant pity counter resets and a new cycle begins.
The distinction matters because the often-repeated “pull 74” figure is not the same kind of fact as the published 90-Warp guarantee. The 90-Warp limit comes from HoYoverse’s Help Center. The approximate 74–90 window comes from player analysis and fan guides, including a guide updated September 17, 2026.

What HoYoverse officially guarantees
HoYoverse’s Help Center article, updated September 23, 2025, lists a base rate for each Warp type and a maximum number of Warps for the relevant 5-star result. It also says that the active banner’s View Details screen is the authoritative place to check the current banner’s rates and featured items.
| Warp type | 5-star result covered by the guarantee | Hard guarantee | Listed base rate | Consolidated rate | Counter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Character Event Warp | 5-star character | At least one within 90 Warps | 0.600% | 1.600%, including the guarantee | Independent from other Warp types |
| Light Cone Event Warp | 5-star Light Cone | At least one within 80 Warps | 0.800% | Not stated in the cited Help Center information | Independent from other Warp types |
| Regular Warp | 5-star character or Light Cone | At least one within 90 Warps | 0.600%, split equally between characters and Light Cones | Not stated in the cited Help Center information | Independent from event Warp types |
A “base rate” is the listed ordinary chance before accounting for the guarantee. The Character Event Warp’s 1.600% consolidated rate includes the effect of receiving a 5-star through the pity system over the relevant sequence of Warps; it should not be read as a 1.600% chance on every individual pull.
The table does not establish an exact per-pull curve. HoYoverse publishes the guaranteed ceiling and listed rates, but the cited support article does not say, for example, “pull 74 has a particular percentage, pull 75 has another percentage,” or identify an official soft-pity start.
When does soft pity start?
The commonly cited answer for a Character Event Warp is around pull 74, with the chance of a 5-star believed to rise gradually through pulls 74 to 90. This is the wording used by a fan-maintained guide updated September 17, 2026, and is consistent with how players discuss their Warp records.

- Honkai: Star Rail Express Travelogue Series Merchandise - Aventurine
That estimate has three important limits:
- It is approximate. “Around 74” does not identify a proven single pull at which the odds change.
- It is community-reported. The fan guide is a secondary source, not a statement from HoYoverse.
- The curve is undocumented. Neither the cited official article nor the fan calculator supplies an official schedule of exact probabilities for pulls 74 through 90.
Consequently, a player at 74 pity should expect better prospects than the ordinary base-rate discussion suggests, but should not treat the next pull as guaranteed or assume a specific percentage. The only guaranteed endpoint documented for a Character Event Warp is the 90th Warp without an earlier 5-star.
How hard pity and soft pity work together
Character Event Warp
The Character Event Warp has a 0.600% listed base rate and guarantees a 5-star character at least once every 90 Warps. Community soft-pity discussions refer to the late part of that same 90-Warp cycle. If a 5-star appears on pull 12, for instance, the count for that cycle ends there; the next cycle starts after that 5-star rather than continuing toward pull 90.
Light Cone Event Warp
The Light Cone Event Warp has a 0.800% listed base rate and an 80-Warp 5-star Light Cone guarantee. Do not transfer the Character Event Warp’s “around 74” shorthand directly to Light Cone pulls. The two banners have different ceilings, and the cited official information does not publish a Light Cone soft-pity threshold or its per-pull curve.

Regular Warp
Regular Warp guarantees a 5-star character or Light Cone at least once every 90 Warps. Its listed base rate is 0.600%, divided equally between those two item categories. It has its own counter, so progress on a Regular Warp does not count toward a Character Event Warp or a Light Cone Event Warp.
Does pity carry over between banners?
HoYoverse states that each Warp banner type has an independent pity counter. In practical terms, the counter you build on Character Event Warp is not the counter used by Light Cone Event Warp or Regular Warp. A Light Cone pull cannot advance your Character Event Warp pity, and a Regular Warp cannot trigger a Character Event Warp guarantee.
For a specific rerun or a currently active banner, open the banner and select View Details. That screen shows the live rules, featured items and rates for that banner. This is especially important when a player is deciding whether to spend a saved count on an event banner or use tickets elsewhere. The official support article establishes the separation by Warp type; it does not provide a separate soft-pity schedule for each banner.
How to check your own pity count
The game does not show a single universal pity number, so tracking your history is the practical way to estimate how close you are to a guarantee. Use the counter for the same Warp category, not a combined total.
- Open the relevant Warp screen. Choose Character Event Warp, Light Cone Event Warp or Regular Warp according to the pulls you want to count.
- Open the Warp history. Review entries from the most recent 5-star backward. The history interface and its retention period can change, so use whatever records are currently visible in the client.
- Find the latest 5-star of that category. Count every Warp after it, including single Warps and ten-Warp groups, until the most recent entry.
- Keep categories separate. A character-event count, a Light Cone-event count and a Regular Warp count are different records.
- Record the date and banner. A simple spreadsheet or note reduces mistakes when multiple event banners are active or when you stop pulling for several weeks.
If your last 5-star is not visible in the history, an older personal record is the only reliable way to reconstruct the missing count. A calculator can help organize a pity state, but it cannot reveal an undocumented official probability curve.

Use it as a planning range, not a promise
At 74 unsuccessful Character Event Warps, the community model says you may be entering the higher-chance portion of the cycle. It does not say that every account receives a 5-star between pulls 74 and 80, nor that pull 74 has a known universal percentage. Plan for the documented 90-Warp ceiling rather than for an early result.

Budget to the hard guarantee
If obtaining the 5-star is essential, reserve enough resources to reach the relevant hard limit instead of assuming soft pity will save pulls. For Character Event Warp, that means planning around 90 Warps for at least one 5-star character; for Light Cone Event Warp, plan around 80 for at least one 5-star Light Cone. The number of Warps needed for a particular featured item can depend on the banner’s featured-item rules, which are shown in View Details.
Do not mix base and consolidated rates
The 0.600% Character Event Warp base rate and 1.600% consolidated rate answer different questions. The first is the listed base chance; the second incorporates the guarantee over the stated system. Neither number tells you that the chance on pull 74, 80 or 89 is a particular percentage.

Why online calculators can look more certain than the rules are
Fan-made pity calculators can be useful for entering a current pity state, counting Warps and estimating how many pulls you can afford. They are planning tools, not official documentation. A calculator may display a probability estimate based on observed player data or an assumed curve, but that output should not be presented as HoYoverse’s published rate schedule.
The same caution applies to screenshots, personal streaks and community spreadsheets. They can support the observation that late-cycle 5-stars occur more often than a constant-rate model would predict, yet they do not prove one exact threshold for every account. Random results can also make a run of early or late 5-stars look like a rule.
Common mistakes about HSR soft pity
- Calling pull 74 a guarantee. It is an approximate community onset, not the hard limit.
- Assuming every banner uses the same ceiling. Character and Regular Warp use a 90-Warp guarantee, while Light Cone Event Warp uses 80.
- Combining all Warp history. Counters are independent by Warp type.
- Treating 1.600% as the per-pull Character Event chance. It is the stated consolidated rate, including the guarantee.
- Applying character-banner observations to Light Cones. The available sources do not establish a Light Cone soft-pity threshold.
- Assuming a calculator knows hidden rules. Fan tools cannot turn an unpublished curve into an official one.
- Ignoring the live banner screen. Featured items and current details belong to the active banner’s View Details panel.
What you can state with confidence
There is a defensible middle position between “soft pity is completely imaginary” and “pull 74 is an official guaranteed breakpoint.” Player guides consistently use soft pity to describe a late-cycle increase, and one current guide places the Character Event onset around pull 74. HoYoverse officially documents the hard guarantees, base rates and separate counters, but not the threshold or exact curve that would prove a precise soft-pity formula.
Quick Recap
For decision-making, count the correct banner type, use the relevant hard ceiling as your resource budget, and treat the 74–90 description as an approximate expectation. Verify the active banner’s exact rates and featured-item rules in View Details before spending tickets.
