Honor of Kings is a 5v5 mobile MOBA: two teams choose heroes, earn strength across the map, and try to destroy the opposing team’s crystal. For a first match, learn what your hero does, understand your lane or roaming job, collect resources safely, and look for chances to take towers with your team.
What you are trying to do
The match is won by taking the enemy crystal. Lanes connect your side of the map to the enemy base, and towers along them protect the route. Clearing minions and creating pressure can help your team approach those towers; destroying them opens the way farther into enemy territory. The official Honor of Kings overview calls taking the enemy crystal the ultimate goal.
This makes objectives more important than chasing every opponent. A fight can be useful if it helps your team take ground or a structure, but a skirmish by itself does not end the match.
Heroes, classes, and team jobs
Honor of Kings calls its characters heroes. The official site uses five play-style labels: Warrior, Assassin, Mage, Marksman, and Support. A September 2025 Epic Games Store beginner guide also discusses Tanks. These labels describe broad tendencies, not rigid assignments: a hero’s class, lane, and job in a particular match do not always line up one-to-one.

These are introductory descriptions, not a current balance ranking. Read your chosen hero’s skill information in the game; knowing what your abilities do is more useful at first than trying to memorize every hero.
How lanes and roaming fit together
The official overview names five lane or role labels: Clash Lane, Jungler, Mid Lane, Farm Lane, and Roamer. The three roads across the map are Mid, Clash, and Farm. Jungler describes a role that works in the jungle area, while Roamer describes a teammate who moves around the map rather than staying in one lane. Common lane fits are starting points, not rules for every hero or update.

| Lane or role | Common fit | What to pay attention to |
|---|---|---|
| Mid Lane | Mages that can clear minions and move to help elsewhere | Clear your lane, then watch for safe opportunities to rotate toward another lane or a map fight. |
| Clash Lane | Often fighters or tanks | Manage your lane and be ready to contest nearby pressure without abandoning it carelessly. |
| Farm Lane | Often marksmen | Minions here provide extra gold, making safe farming an important part of the role. |
| Jungler | A role played around jungle areas and monsters | Gather jungle resources and look for chances to help lanes; this is not one of the three lane roads. |
| Roamer | Often supports or tanks | Move around the map to help teammates rather than treating one lane as your permanent home. |
The lane descriptions reflect the broad defaults in Epic’s September 2025 guide. Your team composition, hero kit, and game updates can change what is sensible in an individual match.
Minions, jungle monsters, and the river
Minions are the recurring lane resource: defeating them helps you earn gold, and the Farm Lane is specifically associated with extra minion gold for marksmen. Jungle and river monsters are also resources, not scenery. The official overview notes that jungle monsters can be useful, while Epic’s guide says defeating river and jungle monsters can provide buffs.

The river runs through the middle of the map, and its bushes can conceal enemies. Before crossing or entering a bush, check the minimap and consider whether teammates are close enough to help. The sources establish the broad purpose of these resources, not reliable current spawn timers or exact rewards, so learn those details from the live game rather than relying on a fixed timing claim.
A practical objective priority
- Collect safe lane resources. Defeat minions when you can do so without taking unnecessary damage, and keep track of where your opponents are.
- Use pressure to approach towers. Minions help create a safer opportunity to attack a tower; avoid treating the structure as a target you should rush alone.
- Contest map resources with awareness. Jungle and river monsters can offer useful rewards, but entering an unseen area or going alone can expose you to an ambush.
- Turn advantages into progress. After a favorable fight or a successful push, help your team take a structure or move toward the next objective instead of wandering off for another fight.
- Keep the crystal in mind. Towers are steps along the route; destroying the enemy crystal is what wins.
First-match habits that make learning easier
- Start with one hero. Learn that hero’s abilities and role before switching frequently. If you are unsure where to begin, Epic’s guide suggests trying a hero suited to Mid or Farm; that is a low-pressure starting point, not a requirement.
- Check the minimap often. Use it to notice missing enemies, nearby allies, and developing fights. Looking only at your hero makes it easier to walk into danger or miss a chance to help.
- Buy available equipment upgrades. Use the in-game shop and upgrade prompts as you learn the match’s equipment system.
- Communicate simply. Share useful information or respond to team signals when possible; coordination matters more than making every play alone.
- Back off when weakened. If you are low on health or isolated, retreating can be better than forcing another fight. A death costs time and can leave teammates without help.
- Build fundamentals before advanced tactics. Learn to farm, use abilities, read the map, and recognize when to push before worrying about elaborate strategies.
Epic’s September 4, 2025 guide stated that the game had more than 100 heroes and that a typical 5v5 match took around 15–20 minutes. Those are figures from that dated guide, not a live roster count or a guaranteed match length.
