HORI Split Pad Pro Rumble: What Nintendo Switch Players Need to Know

By VGSources Team 7 min read

No. The HORI Split Pad Pro for Nintendo Switch has no rumble or HD Rumble. HORI’s specifications explicitly exclude HD Rumble, and Nintendo’s listing for an official HORI Split Pad Pro edition confirms the omission. The pads can improve handheld comfort and control size, but they cannot produce vibration feedback in games.

Which controller does this answer cover?

“Hori switch pad pro” normally refers to the HORI Split Pad Pro, not a standard Joy-Con set or Nintendo’s separate Switch Pro Controller. HORI’s official product page identifies the black model as the NSW-298U. It is a pair of left and right controller halves that attach directly to a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch OLED console for handheld play.

The Split Pad Pro is built around a larger, more conventional gamepad shape. It has larger grips, analog sticks, face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers and a full-size D-pad than the controls on standard Joy-Con controllers. The pads also provide assignable rear triggers and configurable Turbo functionality. Those ergonomic and shortcut features are the reason to buy it; vibration is not part of the design.

It is not a wireless controller and is intended for handheld mode. When the pads are attached to the console, they draw their operating connection from the Switch rather than communicating over Bluetooth as a standalone gamepad would.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What features does the Split Pad Pro include?

The documented feature set explains why the controller can feel more substantial while still lacking several Switch-specific functions.

Feature HORI Split Pad Pro (NSW-298U) What that means in practice
HD Rumble or vibration No Games cannot make the attached pads vibrate.
Handheld attachment Yes The pads are designed to stay attached to a Switch console in handheld mode.
Wireless operation No It is not a Bluetooth gamepad for use away from the console.
Full-size controls Yes Larger sticks, buttons, triggers, grips and D-pad provide a more traditional controller feel.
Rear triggers Yes Supported buttons can be assigned to the rear controls.
Turbo Yes HORI lists selectable rates of 5, 10 or 20 button presses per second.
Motion or gyro sensors No Motion-aiming and tilt-based input cannot come from the pads themselves.
NFC No The controller cannot read or write compatible NFC figures or cards.
IR camera No It has no infrared camera feature.

The same exclusions appear in Nintendo’s US store description for the Pokémon Legends: Arceus edition made by HORI. That listing describes the larger sticks, precision D-pad, shoulder buttons, rear triggers and Turbo, while specifically stating that HD Rumble is not included. The themed shell does not change the underlying controller functions.

How the lack of rumble affects games

Gameplay feedback disappears

On a controller with vibration, a game can signal impacts, weapon fire, collisions, damage, environmental effects or menu actions through the controller. With the Split Pad Pro attached, those cues remain silent. The game still runs normally and all ordinary button, stick and trigger inputs work, but there is no physical pulse to accompany an event.

It is not a setting you can enable

Switch system menus and game options cannot add a motor that is not installed. Turning a game’s vibration option on may leave the setting visible, but the Split Pad Pro has no rumble hardware to respond. Changing sensitivity, reconnecting the pads or updating a game will not create HD Rumble.

Motion-dependent games are a separate limitation

Rumble and motion control are different technologies, and the Split Pad Pro lacks both. A game that expects gyro aiming, steering by tilting the controller or another motion-sensor input may require Joy-Con controllers or a different gamepad. Likewise, NFC-based features and the Joy-Con-style IR camera are unavailable from the Split Pad Pro.

Does the Split Pad Pro Attachment Set add vibration?

No. HORI’s Split Pad Pro Attachment Set for Nintendo Switch (model NSW-371U) lets the two pads connect to an attachment so they can be used as a wired-style controller when the console is not being held in handheld position. The attachment changes how the pads are mounted and connected; it does not add rumble, HD Rumble, motion sensors, NFC or an IR camera.

This distinction matters if you see the attachment marketed as a way to turn the Split Pad Pro into a complete living-room gamepad. It can provide a more conventional grip and wired use, but vibration feedback is still absent. HORI Europe displayed the cited attachment page as sold out when checked, so stock shown on that regional site should be treated as a temporary regional status rather than a worldwide availability statement.

How it compares with a controller that has HD vibration

If vibration is a priority, Nintendo’s separate Switch Pro Controller is the documented alternative in Nintendo’s specifications. The Pro Controller is not a handheld side-grip replacement: it is a standalone controller for use away from the console. Nintendo’s Japanese specification page lists HD vibration, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC, motion sensors and an estimated battery life of approximately 40 hours.

Decision factor HORI Split Pad Pro Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
Primary form factor Left and right pads attached to the Switch for handheld play Separate full-size wireless controller
HD vibration Not included Listed as HD vibration in Nintendo’s specifications
Motion sensors Not included Listed in Nintendo’s specifications
NFC Not included Listed in Nintendo’s specifications
Wireless connection Not a wireless controller Bluetooth 3.0 is listed
Battery information No controller battery because it is an attached handheld device Approximately 40 hours, according to Nintendo’s specification
Best fit Players who want larger controls while the console is in handheld mode Players who want vibration and a separate controller for docked or tabletop play

The two products solve different problems. Choosing the Pro Controller for its vibration does not give you the Split Pad Pro’s attached handheld grip, while choosing the Split Pad Pro for handheld comfort means accepting silent controls and no motion or NFC functions.

Who should still choose the Split Pad Pro?

It suits handheld-focused players

The strongest case is long handheld sessions in which standard Joy-Con controls feel cramped. Larger grips can give your palms more support, and the bigger sticks and buttons can be easier to locate without looking. A full-size D-pad is useful for games that depend on deliberate directional inputs. These are physical comfort and control benefits, independent of rumble.

Rear buttons can reduce finger movement

Assignable rear triggers let you place supported commands under fingers that would otherwise remain on the grips. In a game where you need to keep a thumb on an analog stick while pressing another command, that layout may be more convenient. The exact assignments and supported functions depend on the controller’s configuration process and the game’s own controls.

Turbo is for specific use cases

HORI lists Turbo rates of 5, 10 or 20 button presses per second. That can help with games designed around repeated presses, but it is not the same as faster response, better aim or a general performance boost. Use it only where the game permits that input pattern and where automated repetition does not undermine the intended play.

Who should look elsewhere?

  • You rely on tactile feedback: racing bumps, combat impacts and environmental signals will not be felt through these pads.
  • You need gyro aiming or tilt input: the Split Pad Pro has no motion sensors.
  • You use NFC features: compatible figures and cards cannot be read by this controller.
  • You want a wireless docked controller: the Split Pad Pro is not wireless and is designed around the Switch’s handheld attachment.
  • You need one controller for every Switch feature: the missing IR camera, motion hardware and NFC make it less functionally complete than Nintendo’s own feature-rich controller options.

For these needs, retain the original Joy-Con controllers or use a separate controller whose specifications explicitly include the required feature. Do not assume that an accessory advertised as “full size” also includes Nintendo’s motion, NFC or vibration hardware.

How to verify the model before buying

  1. Check the name: look for “HORI Split Pad Pro,” not a similarly named grip, case or unrelated HORI controller.
  2. Check the model number: the black product page identifies the standard version as NSW-298U. Special-edition shells can have different retail descriptions while retaining the same core design.
  3. Read the feature exclusions: an accurate listing should make clear that HD Rumble, motion or gyro sensors, NFC and an IR camera are absent.
  4. Confirm the intended use: the standard pads are for handheld mode and are not wireless.
  5. Separate the attachment from the pads: if an Attachment Set is included or sold separately, treat it as a mounting and wired-use accessory, not a vibration upgrade.
  6. Check local stock independently: HORI Europe’s availability display is regional and can change. A “no longer available” or “sold out” label on that site does not establish the status of every retailer or country.

Common misconceptions

“Pro” does not mean every Switch feature is present

The word “Pro” in Split Pad Pro describes its larger, more traditional controller design. It does not indicate parity with Nintendo’s Pro Controller. The two products have different purposes and different hardware lists.

An attachment does not create new electronics

The Attachment Set can change the physical arrangement and connection method, but it cannot provide vibration or sensors that are not built into the pads. Treat it as a way to use the existing controls in another grip, not as an expanded-functionality module.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A themed edition is not automatically a new revision

Nintendo’s Pokémon Legends: Arceus listing confirms the same key limitation: no HD Rumble. Artwork, colors and game branding should not be taken as evidence of a different internal feature set unless the listing supplies new specifications.

Bottom-line decision

Buy the HORI Split Pad Pro for its larger handheld controls, substantial grips, rear triggers and optional Turbo—not for vibration. The standard model and the Attachment Set both omit rumble, and the pads also lack motion sensors, NFC and an IR camera. If HD vibration is essential, Nintendo’s separate Switch Pro Controller is the documented option with HD vibration, but it serves a different, standalone-controller role.
