Horizon Hunters Gathering is a canon co-op action game from Guerrilla for PS5 and PC, built around repeatable machine hunts for teams of up to three. You can also play solo with two Hunter NPCs, so joining friends is optional. PlayStation has not announced a release date; the game remains in development.
How co-op works
Players form teams of up to three Hunters to take on machine encounters. Online matchmaking is confirmed, and the game supports crossplay between PS5 and PC. The announced activities offer two different mission shapes:
- Machine Incursion: a high-intensity mission with waves of machines and a boss.
- Cauldron Descent: a longer, multi-stage trial with changing rooms, machine encounters, and optional hidden doors.

Can you play solo?
Yes. PlayStation confirms that a solo player can take two Hunter NPCs into the field. That makes solo play a supported way to experience the hunts rather than a requirement to assemble a human team. The available information does not detail how NPC behavior, difficulty, or rewards compare with a party of players. Official PlayStation page and FAQ
Hunters, weapons and builds
Hunters have distinct melee or ranged styles and their own weapons. Roles and a rogue-lite perk system let players shape builds, giving the team’s character choices and in-run customization a role alongside coordination. Guerrilla has not yet published a complete roster or explained the perk system’s specific rules, so individual builds and character details remain to be confirmed. Guerrilla announcement

Where the story fits—and whether newcomers can start here
PlayStation says the story takes place after Horizon Forbidden West and is canon, but is also intended to work as a standalone adventure. Newcomers can therefore start with Hunters Gathering without first playing the other Horizon games, while returning fans will encounter a story set later in the series timeline. Guerrilla has described new mysteries, characters, and threats, but has not disclosed the campaign’s plot. Official PlayStation page and FAQ
Platforms, crossplay and cross-progression
The confirmed platforms are PS5 and PC, with the PC version listed on Steam. Crossplay lets PS5 and PC players play together. Cross-progression is also supported when players use the same PlayStation account for login and saves. PlayStation FAQ · Steam listing

Release date and development status
No release date has been announced on the official PlayStation or Steam listings. PlayStation says release information will be shared later, while Steam currently lists the game as “Coming soon.” The game is in development; Guerrilla’s February 2026 announcement described it as early in development, and PlayStation’s May 5, 2026 update said it remained in development. How playtests work
Guerrilla and PlayStation have described small-scale tests as a way to evaluate the core experience and gather player feedback before opening tests to larger groups. The official pages point interested players to the PlayStation Beta Program and community channels for updates. Participation is not guaranteed, and PlayStation says playtests are confidential.
