To continue Hornsent’s quest in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, exhaust his dialogue at Three-Path Cross and Highroad Cross, then choose the gold summon sign to help him in Shadow Keep. After defeating Messmer, talk to Hornsent in the boss room; later, defeat his invasion in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh. Choose Leda’s red sign instead and Hornsent’s quest ends sooner, though his Falx and armor become available from that encounter.
This guide covers Hornsent, not Hornsent Grandam. Spoilers follow for locations, quest branches, and rewards.

Where to find Hornsent and get the Cross Maps
Three-Path Cross: Cross Map
In Gravesite Plain, find Hornsent beside Redmane Freyja at the Three-Path Cross Site of Grace. Speak with both NPCs, then exhaust Hornsent’s dialogue to receive the Cross Map. He is hostile toward the Erdtree’s people and cooperates with you because he seeks vengeance for his people.
Highroad Cross: New Cross Map
After reaching Scadu Altus, speak with Hornsent at Highroad Cross and exhaust his dialogue again to receive the New Cross Map. Scadu Altus is accessible after defeating Rellana in Castle Ensis; an alternate route goes up behind Fort of Reprimand. Complete these Cross Map conversations before progressing deep into Shadow Keep.

What to do when Leda suspects Hornsent
Approaching Shadow Keep triggers the Great Rune and charm event. Return to Highroad Cross and speak with Hornsent and Leda. Leda asks you to identify a suspected companion. The initial choice between Hornsent and Thiollier does not determine whom Leda eventually pursues: she will pursue Hornsent. After resting, speak with Leda again and exhaust her updated dialogue.
This conversation is separate from the consequential choice later in Shadow Keep: which summon sign to use.
Should you help Hornsent or Leda?
After the Golden Hippopotamus encounter, progress to the courtyard with burning boats in Shadow Keep. You will find a gold sign to aid Hornsent and a red sign to aid Leda. The choice determines whether Hornsent’s quest continues through Messmer and Rauh or ends at the encounter.

If you want to see the Messmer and Rauh portions of Hornsent’s route, choose gold. If your priority is ending the encounter with his equipment, choose red. The initial dialogue with Leda at Highroad Cross is not this branch decision.

Summon Hornsent against Messmer
After choosing the gold sign, continue to Messmer. Hornsent’s gold summon sign appears inside Messmer’s arena. Summon him and defeat Messmer.
Talk to Hornsent after Messmer
Activate the Messmer’s Dark Chamber Site of Grace and rest. Hornsent will appear in the room. Exhaust his dialogue before leaving. His words indicate that his vengeance may continue beyond Messmer, so expect another hostile encounter later.
Defeat Hornsent in Rauh
Continue through the Ancient Ruins of Rauh toward the Church of the Bud. Hornsent invades on the stairs in a scarlet-rot area along the route. Defeating him completes the longer route and awards his equipment, including the Falx curved swords and armor set.
Can you get Hornsent’s armor and Falx if you miss his quest?
Yes. A reported alternative is to skip Hornsent’s earlier quest route and encounter him among Leda’s enemies in Enir-Ilim; defeating him there yields his equipment. The precise appearance conditions depend on prior quest state and are not fully established for every combination of earlier interactions. The two documented routes are the Shadow Keep choice to aid Leda and the later Enir-Ilim encounter if you ignored the earlier route.
