Focus Features reportedly submitted Obsession for consideration in the Golden Globes’ musical-or-comedy film categories, despite identifying the May 2026 release as a horror film. That is a submission—not a nomination or confirmation that the category has been approved.
What has been reported about *Obsession*’s Golden Globes entry?
The Guardian reported on October 2, 2026, that Focus Features submitted the film in the Globes’ musical-or-comedy categories. The Guardian’s report describes the move as a campaign choice amid the difficulty horror films face fitting the awards’ major film categories.

A submission puts a film forward for consideration. It does not mean the film has been nominated, nor does it establish a final category ruling. IndiaTimes likewise reported a submission and said Obsession had not received a nomination at the time of its October 1, 2026 report. IndiaTimes’ coverage also framed the news around audience questions about calling the film a comedy.
Why does a horror film appear in the comedy category?
The apparent contradiction comes from the distinction between a film’s genre identity and the category in which it is submitted for awards consideration. Focus Features labels Obsession a horror film on its official film page. The page’s synopsis describes a hopeless romantic who breaks the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, only to discover that the wish comes with a dark price.

As The Guardian explains, the Globes’ major film categories are divided between drama and musical or comedy, leaving horror films without a straightforward genre-specific lane. The reported submission does not change Focus Features’ own horror classification; it reflects an attempt to place the film in one of the available categories. The available reports do not establish whether the Globes accepted that category placement.
Is *Obsession* actually a comedy?
Focus Features calls the film horror, while The Guardian characterizes it as a pitch-dark, violent story. In the distributor’s synopsis, the central premise is a wish that takes a sinister turn—not a claim that the film is a comedy. The musical-or-comedy submission should therefore be understood as an awards-category decision, not a definitive description of the film’s tone or genre.

The category question is part of a wider debate about where horror belongs during awards season. The Guardian points to horror’s limited success in both major categories and cites films including The Exorcist and The Silence of the Lambs in connection with the drama route, as well as the song-filled Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in musical or comedy.
