Start with grooming and hoof care, safe handling, a suitable first-aid kit and the essentials your barn does not provide. Fit-dependent tack and seasonal gear can wait until you know the horse and its routine.
Start with the essentials, not a complete shopping cart
For a first horse, make a horse supply checklist in two passes: gather everyday care and handling basics, then confirm what your horse and facility actually require. The My Right Horse checklist notes that supplies vary with the horse’s individual needs and where it is kept. A staffed boarding barn may already provide equipment that a home stable needs to buy.
- Buy first: basic grooming tools, a hoof pick, a properly chosen halter and lead rope, and accessible first-aid supplies.
- Confirm before buying: saddle and girth or cinch, blankets, protective gear, buckets, manure tools, feed storage, and bedding.
- Ask a veterinarian or farrier: which health-related supplies suit the horse and how to use them.
Grooming and hoof-care items
A useful starting horse grooming kit can be assembled from individual tools or bought as a category of bundled products. Common basics include:
- Curry comb
- Hard brush and soft brush
- Mane and tail comb
- Hoof pick
Depending on the horse’s routine, you may also use shampoo, towels, fly spray, hoof conditioner, or wash supplies. The USHJA rider packing list includes items such as braiding bands, a wash bucket, body sponge, scraper, and soaps, but those are not necessary for every horse or every owner. Neither checklist establishes that one particular commercial kit contains the right tools for your needs.

First-aid supplies: keep a barn kit and a portable kit
A first-aid kit is a collection of supplies, not a substitute for veterinary advice. Craig Wood, identified with the University of Kentucky on the Extension Horses first-aid guide dated January 22, 2020, recommends a readily accessible primary kit in the barn or tack room and a smaller kit for rides. The guide says to replace materials after they are used.
Barn or tack-room kit
The Extension Horses list includes cotton wool, gauze or crepe bandage, self-adhesive bandaging tape, multipurpose dressings, antiseptic spray and wash, petroleum jelly, blunt-edged dressing scissors, fly repellent, sterile water, leg bandages, a thermometer, a small bowl, cold packs, a halter and lead rope, veterinary phone numbers, and waterproof storage. Other checklists name items such as gloves, stable wraps, antiseptic scrub, Epsom salts, or hoof packing; ask your veterinarian which supplies are appropriate for your horse.

Portable ride kit
For a compact kit, the same Extension Horses guide lists a hoof pick, pocket knife, bandages, antiseptic spray, baling twine, veterinary phone numbers, first-aid notes, and a small durable bag. Store it so it is easy to carry and reach when you ride. Do not use a shopping list as a basis for choosing medication, doses, or wound treatment; contact a veterinarian for care instructions.
Handling gear and riding tack
Halter and lead rope
A halter and lead rope are basic handling equipment. If a horse will be left haltered while unattended, My Right Horse recommends a leather breakaway strap or an all-leather halter that can release if the horse gets caught; it says nylon halters should be used only while the horse is supervised.

Saddle, pad, girth or cinch, bridle, and reins
Common riding tack includes a saddle, saddle pad, girth or cinch, bridle, and reins. These are not interchangeable, one-size-fits-all purchases: saddle fit and style need to suit both horse and rider, and girth or cinch size depends on the horse. My Right Horse advises choosing a saddle after the horse comes home so fit and style can be checked, with help from a saddle-fit professional or instructor. Saddle-pad design can differ between English and Western riding, and a bridle may be bitless. Do not choose a saddle, bit, or training aid for a particular horse without suitable fitting or qualified advice.
Blankets and protective gear depend on conditions
Blankets, sheets, and protective gear are conditional supplies rather than automatic starter purchases. My Right Horse distinguishes a waterproof turnout sheet or blanket for harsh weather from a stable blanket for indoor or mild conditions. Fit matters: the page recommends removing a blanket daily to check its fit and the horse’s health.

If the horse lives at home, a manure pick, wheelbarrow or muck bucket, feed and water buckets, tub and hose, sturdy fencing, and shelter may be needed. My Right Horse notes that professionally staffed boarding facilities will likely already have some husbandry equipment. Ask the barn what it supplies before purchasing buckets, mucking tools, or stall equipment.

Travel and biosecurity supplies
When traveling, Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine advises taking your own buckets, cleaning tools, grooming supplies, and tack, and avoiding communal water troughs and tie rails where possible. Its October 16, 2023 article explains that infectious disease can spread through contaminated objects as well as direct contact. This is practical travel guidance, not a substitute for current veterinary or local advice about a specific destination.
For a new horse arriving at a farm, Cornell describes a quarantine period of 30 days or at least two weeks, along with separation and hygiene measures. Because that protocol concerns a particular arrival setting, discuss an appropriate plan with your veterinarian rather than applying the interval automatically to every situation.
