How do I get Herring?
Kabat offers Herring at Trosky Castle near the beginning of Back in the Saddle, after Henry recovers his belongings. The choice can matter to your story and save, so consider saving before you respond if you may want to revisit it. Whether you can recover Herring after declining is not established consistently; reports vary with world state. See the Herring guide.
How do I unlock Good Old Pebbles or Red Herring?
Guide sources report these distance-based perks: Good Old Pebbles after about 35 km ridden on Pebbles, and Red Herring after about 50 km ridden on Herring. For Pebbles, fast travel does not count. Keep the horse active and ride manually; the game may not display the unlock at precisely the same point if distance accumulated on other horses affects the record.

Which horse should I keep?
Choose based on the job rather than a single overall ranking. Capacity matters most when hauling loot, stamina and speed help with sustained travel, and courage is relevant when riding into danger. Consider whether you want a free horse with a distance perk or a paid horse whose base stats better match a particular use.

- Long-distance travel: prioritize stamina and speed.
- Dangerous roads or mounted combat: pay attention to courage as well as the other stats.
For reference, INARA lists base Herring at 127 stamina, 175 capacity, 40 speed and 11 courage. Its Herring-with-a-perk entry lists 210 stamina, 425 capacity, 55 speed and 26 courage. These are database reference figures, not guaranteed values for every save or setup. Check the INARA horse reference alongside your in-game horse screen.
What do horse stats and gear do?
Stamina supports sustained travel; capacity determines how much the horse can carry; speed affects pace; and courage relates to panic in danger. Tack can change the displayed comparison, so look at the effects on your own horse rather than treating one item as an automatic upgrade.

- Saddles and saddlebags: consider these when you want more carrying capacity.
- Horseshoes: are a movement-focused option.
- Bridles: affect handling or control-related stats.
- Caparisons: provide protection or style and may involve tradeoffs.
Equipment effects interact with the horse’s attributes and other gear. Compare the green and red changes in the horse screen before buying or switching equipment; a geared horse should not be compared against an ungeared one as if the difference came from the horse alone.

Displayed values can differ because of tack, perks, player bonuses, game updates or Hardcore mode. The horse reference notes lower values can appear in Hardcore mode. Database figures and screenshots may therefore not match your save. For a fair comparison, use the same setup where possible and trust the current in-game screen over a screenshot with unknown gear, perks or mode.
