When a key college football player is unavailable, coaches redistribute that player’s snaps and responsibilities—but they do not always make a simple one-for-one substitution. A backup may take over, several players may share the work, or coaches may adjust personnel and assignments. The effect depends on who can execute the role, how prepared the rest of the unit is, and what the matchup requires; a changed depth chart alone does not show how much the team’s performance will change.
What changes when a starter is out?
The first change is usually an opportunity for someone else to take practice reps and handle some of the missing player’s work. That work can include more than playing time: it may involve a particular package, assignment, or communication responsibility. So “who moves up?” is only part of the question. Coaches also have to decide how the unit will cover the absent player’s function.
There is no single depth-chart procedure used by every team. Tennessee defensive backs coach Willie Martinez described using quality reps for younger and older players to build the group, while Georgia coordinators have discussed monitoring practice reps by position. Those examples show why practice work can be informative, but a listed order is not proof of a fixed game plan.
Who takes over: a backup or a rotation?
Coaches may promote one backup, divide the work among several players, or change personnel and responsibilities. A team’s available depth can shape that choice. Martinez said Tennessee needed enough depth to use several corners, safeties, and STAR players in a game; his point was that a unit may rely on multiple players rather than one replacement.

To assess which approach is more plausible, look for evidence in five areas:
- Role experience: Has the potential replacement played meaningful snaps in the role before?
- Practice preparation: Is the player getting reps with the relevant group or package?
- Assignment fit: Can the player handle the same responsibilities, or would the defense need to adjust?
- Available depth: Are there enough prepared players to share the workload?
- Matchup demands: Does the opponent require a particular skill, personnel grouping, or communication task?
These are useful clues, not a common scoring system: the available team accounts do not quantify them or establish how often one option succeeds. Practice roles and coach comments can suggest a plan, but they cannot confirm exactly how snaps will be distributed in a game.

Why readiness is about more than talent
A replacement must know the job and be able to execute it within the unit. Indiana players described preparation on the team’s installs and clarity about each player’s assignment as part of responding to injuries. Defensive back Rodney Randle put the emphasis on coordination: “Yeah. It comes down to coaching, having the guys around me knowing what to do, the ‘next man up’ idea, and we just play off of each other.”
That helps explain why a highly regarded player is not automatically a seamless replacement. The unit also needs clear assignments and communication, especially if coaches are changing personnel or dividing responsibilities. “Next man up” expresses an expectation; it does not guarantee that production or performance will remain unchanged.

What one example can—and cannot—tell you
Indiana University Athletics reported that after Stephen Daley’s injury, Indiana held Alabama to 23 rushing yards and 193 total yards in that game. The figures are a single team-reported example of a unit sustaining strong results after an important absence. They do not establish that losing a starter has no effect, or predict what will happen to another team or position group.
The official team accounts and coach comments provide examples and describe preparation, but they do not supply a multi-team estimate of the average performance effect of losing a starter by position. There is no sound basis here for assigning a general number to the cost of an absence.

How to check a player’s status
Availability is time-sensitive. For the 2025–26 College Football Playoff season, participating schools were required to submit reports three days before each game, update them daily, and provide a final report 90 minutes before kickoff. The CFP policy distinguishes pre-game from game-day designations; those rules apply to that season’s playoff participants, not automatically to every college football game.
For other games, check the team’s current official availability report and dated coach comments. Treat a status label or a depth-chart listing as a clue, not certainty about whether a player will appear or how well the team will perform. When following a live game, use the latest official information rather than an older report.
