Watch Dogs 2 did make a major creative adjustment: Ubisoft shifted from the first game’s noir-leaning approach to a brighter Bay Area setting, a more sociable protagonist and missions designed for greater player freedom. Developers described the change as a deliberate new direction informed by both their own creative goals and feedback on the original. But the available interviews do not document a production meltdown—or show that a change in tone alone saved the game.
Why Watch Dogs 2 changed its tone
The shift began with a different setting and point of view. The first Watch Dogs centered on lone-wolf Aiden Pearce in a fictionalized Chicago with a noir sensibility. Its sequel moved to the Bay Area and followed Marcus Holloway, a sociable hacker working with DedSec. Dominic Guay, the sequel’s senior producer, said the team wanted a contrast with the first game as well as a world that would feel welcoming over long play sessions.

“We wanted to embrace our setting and have a more balanced tone than in the first opus,” Guay told Gamesplanet. He added, “Marcus, with his good natured attitude also affected our tone.” The sunny, colorful surroundings and Marcus’s personality helped set the sequel apart; the change was not simply a decision to make every subject lighter.
Guay said the team still wanted to address serious topics, including technology, its misuse as a tool of control and its effects on people’s lives. Research into hacker culture, Bay Area locations and people, and the consequences of a hyperconnected society informed that subject matter. The creative aim was to take the series less solemnly while retaining darker ideas and moments.

How Marcus and DedSec changed the perspective
Director Danny Belanger described Marcus as a different kind of lead from Aiden: sociable, connected to a group and able to bring a broader range of personalities into the story. Following DedSec also gave the developers a different angle on the same universe. The sequel could explore technology through a collective of hackers rather than through the isolated perspective of a lone protagonist.
Belanger connected that change in character and setting to a less prescribed structure. “The game is not telling you what to do. You’re actually finding what you want to do in the game, which is a really different approach for us.” The Bay Area setting opened space to discuss technology, while the game’s structure encouraged players to discover activities and opportunities for themselves.

What Ubisoft changed after feedback on the first game
Guay said the team considered what players liked and disliked, without treating feedback as its only guide. “We wanted to listen to people’s feedback to the first Watch Dogs in order to make a better sequel,” he said. The developers identified several areas to rethink:
- Driving: Players had said driving got in the way of enjoying the first game. Ubisoft worked with Ubisoft Reflections on the sequel’s driving.
- Mission approaches: The team aimed to let players favor stealth and non-lethal play throughout missions, or choose aggressive or trickster tactics, instead of forcing a single style.
- Open-world discovery: Developers reconsidered how the world and narrative worked together so that exploration could reveal more surprises and player-led opportunities.
In a retrospective interview, Guay said internal playtests showed players settling on preferred approaches but changing tactics when the moment called for it. He saw that ability to adapt as valuable: players could act on instinct rather than always follow a required tactic or optimize for efficiency. That describes the design goal and playtest observations, not a measured claim about every player.

Josh’s rewrite shows a smaller-scale creative pivot
A later account from Ubisoft offers a specific example of the developers revising an idea to make the ensemble work. Jonathan Morin, Watch Dogs 2’s creative director, recalled that Josh was first written as an upbeat YouTuber, but the writers struggled to find his place in DedSec. Morin proposed making Josh autistic, drawing on his experience with his autistic son. Ubisoft says the team initially worried that portraying a hacker on the spectrum with social difficulties might feel clichéd; Morin encouraged the writers to approach Josh as an individual and work out how he fit with the group.
Morin later recalled, “At some point, the narrative director came to me and said Josh wasn’t working.” The account illustrates a character-development decision and the work of fitting a distinctive person into a group. It does not establish that the entire game was at risk.

Did an attitude adjustment save Watch Dogs 2 from a meltdown?
The developer interviews support a story about a purposeful creative shift and concrete revisions to driving, mission flexibility and world discovery. They do not document a literal production meltdown, a near-collapse, or a claim that the tonal change rescued the project. “Saved from meltdown” works as a dramatic headline, but it goes beyond what the cited accounts establish.
The more defensible conclusion is that Ubisoft wanted a sequel with its own identity. A brighter setting, Marcus and DedSec’s group perspective, serious themes handled with a lighter touch, and more room for players to choose how they approached missions all served that goal. Developers linked those decisions both to lessons from the first game and to their desire to take the series in a different direction.
