The workflow used image-processing tools and StyleGAN, then smoothing and manual reshaping; for the smiling version, the creator also edited teeth into the input image.
How the Doom Guy portrait was made
Dan Robitzski’s June 17, 2019 account for Futurism describes the source as the low-resolution Doom Guy sprite from the 1993 game Doom. The image passed through FaceApp, Waifu2x and GIMP, producing an improved but still pixelated intermediate. StyleGAN was then used to generate a more realistic result, which was smoothed and manually reshaped. Read the contemporaneous account at Futurism.

That sequence matters: the final face was not simply a larger copy of the original pixels. Image processing, generation and human editing all contributed to the portrait, so it is best understood as an interpretation of the sprite rather than canonical character art or a recovered photograph.
Why the smiling version had teeth in its input
In the Reddit thread containing the images, a commenter asked, “Uhm, what’s with the teeth in the low pixel version?” The original poster, 1MightBeAPenguin, replied that the network could not generate images from very low-resolution images and that the creator added teeth to make it easier for the network to generate an image. See the Reddit post and the poster’s explanation.

That is the poster’s account of this particular smiling variant, not a general technical rule about neural networks or a verified description of StyleGAN’s architecture. The teeth functioned as an edited cue in the input, according to the creator.

What the result does—and does not—show
- It shows a human-guided workflow: several tools, a generative model, smoothing and manual reshaping were involved.
- It is an interpretation of Doom Guy: the portrait was generated and edited from pixel art, not found as a photograph or presented as official character artwork.
- The teeth detail is specific to the smiling version: the creator said they edited teeth into its low-resolution input to help produce that image.
