Don’t treat a return announcement as an automatic start: check the player’s game status and likely workload, your league’s scoring and lineup rules, the remaining schedule, and the best alternative for that roster spot.
What changes when a star returns?
Two things can happen at once: the returning player becomes available to consider, and the team’s rotation may shift back toward its usual roles. A teammate who gained minutes or offensive responsibility during the absence may lose some of that opportunity. That makes the return a lineup decision about both the star and the players around them.
Role and opportunity are important parts of fantasy evaluation, as NBA.com’s fantasy basketball guide explains. Reassess a temporary fill-in rather than assuming the production or playing time that helped during the absence will continue unchanged.
Should you start a star in the first game back?
Not automatically. Availability does not establish workload, and there is no universal post-injury minutes ramp or first-game performance that applies to every player. Check the latest official status and reliable reporting about restrictions or missed back-to-backs, then compare the star with the alternative you could start in that specific lineup slot.

- Confirm availability: Check whether the player is available for the game or scoring period, especially near lineup lock.
- Assess workload information: Look for credible reporting about minutes limits or schedule-related restrictions. A general return date or rumor is not confirmation of a full workload.
- Check role: Consider how the player’s return could change minutes and offensive opportunity for teammates.
- Compare your alternatives: Weigh the uncertain return against the best reliable player available to you for that slot and matchup.
How schedule, scoring and lineup rules affect the decision
The same player can be a different choice depending on how your league scores fantasy basketball and how many games remain in the scoring period. The timing matters too: a return for one late-period game is different from one that gives you multiple chances to use the player.
NBA.com distinguishes daily lineups from weekly lineups. With daily changes, you may be able to react as the player’s status changes. A weekly lock can make a midweek absence or uncertain workload affect the entire period. Check your league’s actual lineup-lock timing before deciding.
Also check roster eligibility and transaction rules. An injured-reserve slot may let you keep an injured player while adding a replacement, but platform behavior varies. Yahoo’s help documentation covers basketball IL and IL+ positions and says a fantasy player may remain in those slots after returning to real-life play: Yahoo Fantasy help on managing injured and inactive players.
Compare the returning star with a teammate or waiver option
Use the same decision factors whether you are choosing between the star and a teammate who filled in, or between the star and a waiver replacement:

- Expected availability and any reported workload limits.
- Likely minutes and offensive role after the rotation changes.
- Games remaining in the scoring period and when they are scheduled.
- Your league’s scoring format and the player’s roster eligibility.
- Whether your lineup locks daily or weekly, and any relevant transaction limits.
- The replacement’s opportunity and reliability for this particular matchup.
These are comparison points, not a guarantee that a returning star will be the better start in every league or situation.
One dated example—and what it does not prove
In its December 29, 2025 Week 11 start/sit guide, NBA.com reported that Stephon Castle was averaging 20.6 points, 6.0 assists and 4.1 rebounds since returning from injury on December 8. That is one player’s reported production over a particular period, not a benchmark for what other stars will do after returning.

Keep medical policy separate from fantasy forecasting
The NBA’s 2025–26 Concussion Policy Summary states: “If a player is diagnosed with a concussion, he cannot return to full participation without restrictions: (i) for at least 48 hours after the time of injury; and (ii) until after he completes the required return-to-participation process.” This policy applies to concussion cases; it does not provide a general timetable for other injuries or predict a player’s fantasy workload after returning.
