How Injuries to Offensive Linemen Affect a Quarterback and the Running Game

Offensive-line injuries can change protection assignments and run-blocking combinations, but the available evidence does not establish a fixed performance penalty.

An offensive-line injury can change who blocks, which matchups the offense must handle, and how the line communicates. That can affect the quarterback’s time and space to throw, as well as the blocking combinations intended to open running lanes. The mechanisms are clear; the sources available do not establish a universal number of sacks, yards, or points an injury costs.

How an injury can affect the quarterback

Pass protection is more than keeping a defender from recording a sack. The line is trying to create space for the quarterback and preserve it long enough for a play to develop. A missing tackle, guard, or center may change assignments, communication, and the timing or location of blocker-rusher matchups. The replacement and the new combination matter; an injury does not automatically mean protection will get worse.

A 2021 spatial-analysis paper describes the pass-blocking task as creating defender-free space for the quarterback and sustaining it. Its framework uses tracking data from six games in the 2020 regular season, and it studies pass plays in the pocket—not injury outcomes or running plays. It helps explain the protection process, but cannot quantify what a particular absence does to a team.

Why pressure is not just a line statistic

A quarterback’s decisions and time holding the ball affect whether a play ends in pressure or a sack. Those outcomes therefore do not, by themselves, prove that a lineman played poorly or that an injury caused a team’s results to change.

The NFL Next Gen Stats Analytics Team’s September 21, 2023 explainer offers more detail than a raw sack total. Its tracking models identify blockers and rushers, estimate how pressure develops over time, and identify matchups, double teams, and chip blocks. The model can attribute pressures and sacks to individual blockers, but model-based attribution is not proof that an injury caused a change.

  • The explainer defines pressure as a pass-rush play in which a rusher affects the quarterback before the throw; its model requires pressure probability to exceed 75 percent.
  • It defines pressure rate as pressures divided by pass-rush snaps. An individual lineman’s pressure rate allowed uses pressures allowed divided by that player’s pass-blocking snaps.
  • The explainer reports that the average pass rusher generates pressure on 10.3 percent of pass-rush plays and that average pressure occurs in 2.9 seconds. These are 2023 benchmarks, not estimates of the effect of an offensive-line injury.

As the NFL analytics team puts it, “An individual pass rush is temporal by nature.” Timing and matchup context can help describe how a play unfolded, but still need to be interpreted alongside the quarterback’s choices.

How an injury can affect the running game

On a running play, the available blockers and their combinations help shape the space a runner can use. An injury can change the personnel or blocking structure for a particular call, which may alter the intended lanes. That is a plausible tactical pathway, not evidence that an absence caused a particular drop in yards per carry or rushing efficiency.

Run results also depend on factors such as the defensive front, the run concept, the back available, game situation, and play selection. The 2021 spatial-analysis paper focuses on pass protection in the pocket, so it cannot establish a rushing effect.

What the available injury evidence can—and cannot—show

The NFL says its injury data are compiled and analyzed by IQVIA, an independent third party retained by the league. The NFL’s public injury-data page does not present a joined analysis of offensive-line absences and subsequent quarterback or rushing outcomes.

A 2017 cohort study examines combine-identified injury history and later individual NFL performance for 2,203 athletes from the 2009–2015 combine period. That is a different question from whether an in-season offensive-line absence changes a team’s results, so it cannot supply a direct team-level estimate.

A 2022–23 Inside Injuries white paper describes proprietary injury-risk and performance methods, including an offensive-line category in its team health scoring. It is an example of commercial injury analysis, not independent causal proof of a general penalty from losing a lineman.

How to assess a specific team or game

A before-and-after change in sacks, pressure, or rushing production describes what happened; it does not isolate why. To evaluate a particular case, establish which player was absent, his position, who replaced him, how the lineup changed, and who the opponent was. Then look beyond one headline statistic:

  • For passing, consider pressure timing and blocker-rusher matchups as well as sacks, hits, or hurries. Note that tracking-model attributions are estimates, not causal findings.
  • For rushing, compare the relevant blocking calls and the available backs as well as the result. Passing-protection measures do not establish run-blocking performance.
  • Keep quarterback behavior, opponent, scheme, and game context in view. A change after an injury is not, by itself, proof the injury caused it.

No fixed “yards lost per injured lineman” figure is established by the cited evidence. Nor does it support a general forecast for a team’s quarterback or running game based only on an injury report.
