An AHL loan assigns a player to a club in another league—usually the NHL team’s AHL affiliate—so he can play there. It is not a trade and does not, by itself, mean the NHL team has given up its rights. Whether the player must clear waivers first depends on his exemption status and transaction history under the NHL/NHLPA collective bargaining agreement (CBA). A separate rule reported to take effect in 2026–27 will require an assigned player to appear in a minor-league game before his NHL club recalls him.
What an AHL loan means
The NHL CBA uses “loan” for an NHL club making a player’s services available to a club in another league, subject to the agreement’s rules. In routine transaction news, that other club is often the NHL team’s AHL affiliate. The player’s assignment and availability to play change; the loan itself is not a trade or a release of the NHL club’s rights while he remains under its control. The governing language is in Article 13 of the NHL/NHLPA CBA.
Teams may use “loaned” in a transaction notice without explaining whether waivers were required or cleared. For example, Ottawa’s September 2026 roster announcement separately listed players placed on waivers for the purpose of being loaned to Belleville and players loaned there. Those descriptions refer to different steps, not interchangeable statuses. See the Senators’ roster announcement.
Does a player need waivers to go to the AHL?
Not always. The CBA provides waiver exemptions based on factors including a player’s age, years since signing his first NHL contract, and NHL games played. The thresholds differ for skaters and goalies, and NHL playoff games count in the game totals specified by the agreement. For players who are subject to waivers, Article 13 sets conditions for loans to another league, including that regular waivers have been requested and cleared during the playing-season waiver period.

Clearing waivers does not create a permanent pass to the AHL. The CBA limits the loan right after clearance by cumulative NHL games played and days on an NHL roster. A team’s transaction primer gives the familiar shorthand as 10 NHL games or 30 cumulative roster days since the player last cleared waivers, while noting an emergency-recall exception. That summary is useful context, but the player’s exemption category and the controlling CBA provisions determine the specific case. See the Carolina Hurricanes transaction primer and Article 13.
How to check a specific player
- Identify the player’s category. Check age, years since signing his first NHL contract, position, and NHL games played against the applicable CBA exemption threshold.
- Check his waiver history. Find when he last cleared waivers, if applicable.
- Count what has happened since clearance. Review NHL games played and days on an NHL roster under the CBA’s rules.
- Check for an applicable recall category or exception. Emergency recalls can affect the analysis.
- Read the actual transaction notice. Distinguish being placed on waivers, clearing waivers, and being loaned; one status does not establish another.
A claim by another club while a player is on waivers can transfer him to that club. If he goes unclaimed, his assigning club may loan him subject to the applicable rules.

What changes in 2026–27
The NHL and NHLPA ratified a four-year CBA in July 2025, running through the 2029–30 season. The NHL maintains the agreement and related documents on its CBA page; its ratification announcement is dated July 8, 2025.
According to the Buffalo Sabres’ summary of the agreement, beginning in 2026–27 a player assigned to the AHL must appear in a minor-league game before his NHL club recalls him. The change addresses a described paper transaction: a club could assign a player to clear an NHL roster spot while he remained with or traveled with the NHL team, then recall him without an AHL appearance. The reported requirement means a club cannot use that described assignment-and-immediate-recall maneuver without an AHL game. For edge cases, the exact language in the agreement and any later league guidance control; the summary is available in the Sabres’ CBA explainer.

What the loan changes for the NHL team
The assignment changes where the player is rostered and available to play, and can free an NHL roster spot. The organization can continue to hold his rights while he remains under its control. A loan notice alone does not establish why the club made the move, whether the player will return by a particular date, or what his salary and salary-cap treatment will be. Those details depend on the individual contract and applicable roster and cap rules.
Example: Roy and Del Gaizo loaned to Laval
On October 30, 2025, Montreal announced that Joshua Roy and Marc Del Gaizo were loaned to the Laval Rocket after being recalled on October 21 and traveling with the Canadiens. Roy appeared in one game on the trip; Del Gaizo practiced with Montreal but did not make his Canadiens debut. The example shows why a loan announcement by itself does not tell you whether the player appeared in an NHL game or why the club moved him. See the Canadiens’ transaction announcement.
How to compare two AHL loan situations
When two transactions look similar, compare the details that determine what the club could do and what the assignment requires.
Quick Recap
- Season and agreement: note whether the move is before or during the 2026–27 rule change.
- Waiver status: establish whether the player is exempt, and, if not, whether he cleared waivers and how many NHL games and roster days have accrued since.
- Recall type: check whether a regular or emergency recall is involved.
- Minor-league appearance: determine whether the 2026–27 game requirement applies to the transaction and whether the player appeared.
- Official wording: distinguish a waiver placement from a clearance and a completed loan.
- Contract and cap treatment: assess separately; the word “loan” does not establish the individual financial effect.
