An anonymous electronics engineer reconstructed a boardview for an already-manufactured Nintendo Switch Lite logic board by photographing both sides, removing and cataloguing components, probing connections, and building a custom circuit to map hidden nets. The project author reports 2,444 photographs, 760 desoldered parts, 1,917 wires and about 30,176 solder joints. Those are the author’s project figures, not independently audited counts.
What a boardview shows
A boardview combines a circuit board’s netlist—the list of electrical connections—with the locations and shapes of its parts and pads. The Switch Lite project also provides images of both board sides. The author defines the output this way: “The full list of these interconnects is called the netlist, and when combined with the part and pad geometries, constitute a boardview.” The µSoldering project page describes the method and files; Hackster.io’s report independently covers the same project.
How the manufactured board was mapped
When a boardview is generated from original design files, the design data already describes the board. This project instead started with a physical board, so the engineer had to infer its geometry and connectivity through a largely manual process.
- Photograph both sides. The author first photographed and stitched the bottom side, removed the RF shields, then photographed and stitched the top. The images were refined to improve geometric and color alignment.
- Mark parts and pads. The panoramas were imported into a custom graphical interface, where the author drew outlines for components and their pads.
- Remove and catalogue components. Each component was desoldered, placed in a uniquely identified bin, and associated with its presumed reference designator.
- Record ground connections. With pads exposed, a digital multimeter in continuity mode was used to check each pad against the board’s ground plane.
- Group visible connections. Connections visible in the two outer PCB layers were used to group pads into net fragments. This established some connections but could not reveal all those routed through hidden layers.
- Trace hidden connections. Wires from a custom extractor PCB were connected to the fragments. The board powered pins in sequence and logged which other fragments changed state, providing evidence to join fragments into a netlist.
The author described three “novel-ish” elements working together: high-resolution, geometrically and color-accurate panoramas; a GUI for recording part and pad geometry; and a custom PCB that powered pins one at a time while reading the states of other pins. This was not an automated scan of an intact console: imaging, desoldering, probing, wiring and data entry all required substantial hands-on work.

What “6,000 PPI” means here
The project title refers to the resolution of the panoramas, not a measure of electrical detail or a claim that the boardview itself contains 6,000 pixels per inch of usable screen display. The author says each full-resolution panorama was around half a gigapixel, making the files problematic to work with. A later note on the project page says the panoramas are served or viewed at 2,000 PPI. The distinction matters: the headline figure describes the original image resolution, while the later viewing note describes how the images are presented.
Scale, time and limits of the project
The project author reports stitching 2,444 photographs into two panoramas, desoldering and binning 760 parts, and using 1,917 wires and approximately 30,176 solder joints. The author says development of the process, software and hardware took over a year and cost over $10,000; the soldering work itself took about three weeks. These are figures for this project alone, not general benchmarks for boardview reconstruction.

The result is a boardview and netlist, not a complete characterization of every component or a repair guide. The author says electrical-property measurements of the binned parts were not completed. They also lacked an ultrasonic cleaner for the described cleaning steps; the project page warns that flux residue could cause false-positive connections between net fragments. Those limitations affect what can be inferred from the output.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to inspect the boardview
The project page instructs readers to download OpenBoardView, obtain and unzip the release data, then open Switch Lite Logic Board.bvr. Its instructions describe using the view controls to inspect parts and pad nets, zoom, and flip between board sides. The page links to Torrent and Internet Archive downloads; availability can change, so check the project page for current release options. It says simple part and pad outlines were used because a more complex rendering feature was unsupported in OpenBoardView at the time, and that the data files were cross-compatible with FlexBV5. Treat those software compatibility details as the author’s report at publication, not a guarantee about current versions.
