A creator saying they are “retiring” does not necessarily mean they are leaving the anime industry. The key is what the announcement says they will stop doing, what they say they will continue, and when the change takes effect. Mitsuo Iso, for example, said he had retired from animation work while continuing as a director; manga creator Aka Akasaka said he would stop drawing manga while continuing to create stories.
What does a creator mean by “retirement”?
Read the object of the announcement, not just the word “retirement.” A creator may be ending work in a particular role, medium, format, or project without saying they will stop all creative work or leave the industry. “Retiring from producing” and “retiring from drawing,” for instance, describe narrower changes than an explicit announcement of departure.
These examples come from both anime professionals and manga creators. They illustrate how announcements can be worded; they do not establish a formal industry-wide pattern or taxonomy.
Four details to check in an announcement
- Scope: Identify the specific activity named: animation, drawing, directing, producing, feature filmmaking, or a particular work.
- Continuity: Look for any work the creator says they will keep doing, including another professional role or creative activity.
- Timing: Check whether the change is immediate, follows a current or final work, or leaves existing commitments in place.
- Reason: Use only the reason the creator or report gives. A personal explanation does not establish why other creators make similar decisions.
How the distinction appears in reported cases
| Creator | What the announcement covered | What was also stated |
|---|---|---|
| Mitsuo Iso | He said he had retired from the animator part of his work, which he had done for roughly 30 years. | In a 2018 interview, Iso said he wanted to focus on directing and could work on art for works he directs. He described the change as leaving key animation to newer artists, not ending his work as a director. Crunchyroll News interview |
| Hayao Miyazaki | In 2013, the announcement concerned stepping away from animated feature filmmaking. | The Japan Times reported that he intended to pursue personal interests and quoted him saying he would not be idle. That report did not say he would stop all creative activity. The Japan Times report; Screen Daily report |
| Aka Akasaka | In 2022, he described retiring from being a manga artist who draws. | Akasaka said he wanted to concentrate on creating stories and would continue drawing loosely as a hobby. Crunchyroll News report |
| Hiroya Oku | In an interview published August 11, 2026, Oku described The SWEET Sixty Princess as his planned final manga. | He said he had made up his mind and lacked the energy to continue drawing manga. This describes his stated plan and reason; it is not evidence of an immediate departure from every form of creative work. Courrier Japon interview |
| Koji Yamamoto | In a June 2026 report, the producer said he would retire from producing. | ORICON reported that he planned to focus on management, mentoring, and industry innovation, while credits on productions already in progress were to remain unchanged at the time of reporting. ORICON report |
Why a final work or role change is not proof of a total exit
A stated final work identifies a plan tied to that work or medium. Oku called The SWEET Sixty Princess his planned final manga and explained that he no longer had the energy to sustain drawing manga. That does not, by itself, establish that he will stop every kind of creative activity.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Likewise, a shift in duties can leave other work intact. Iso’s statement concerned animation work while he continued directing; Yamamoto’s reported change concerned producing, with management and mentoring in view and existing in-production credits unchanged at the time of ORICON’s report. A headline that says “retirement” may leave these distinctions out, so the creator’s stated scope and timeline matter.

They show why a retirement announcement should be read precisely: identify the work ending, note any explicitly continuing activity, and preserve the timing described. The reasons reported here are personal—such as wanting to focus on directing or story creation, or feeling unable to sustain drawing—not explanations that can be generalized to the anime industry.
