Start by checking whether your PC meets DOOM: The Dark Ages’ ray-tracing-capable GPU requirement, then work through Bethesda’s fixes in order: install the game on an NVMe SSD, enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, disable overlays, check the active GPU and power profile, lower graphics settings, update drivers, and verify game files. The published 60 FPS targets describe hardware tiers, not a guarantee of perfectly steady frame pacing in every scene.
Check your PC against the published requirements
Bethesda says most performance issues can be attributed to hardware. Compare your actual CPU, graphics card and dedicated VRAM, system RAM, Windows version, and storage drive with the requirements before changing settings. A hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU is required even at minimum settings; a GPU that lacks that capability does not meet the published minimum.
Bethesda’s 2025 specifications describe the following targets. They are published specifications, not independent benchmarks or a promise that every system in a tier will maintain the stated frame rate in every scene.

Bethesda / Slayer’s Club lists the tier details in its PC specifications; Steam independently lists minimum and recommended requirements, including 100 GB available storage, on the game’s store page. If your machine falls below the minimum, prioritize meeting the requirements rather than expecting a settings change to compensate for missing ray-tracing capability, memory, or storage.

Try the fixes in this order
- Install the game on an NVMe SSD. Bethesda explicitly recommends an NVMe solid-state drive rather than a hard disk drive. If the game is on an HDD, move or reinstall it to NVMe before judging other changes; this is a requirement-oriented step, not a guaranteed fix for every kind of stutter.
- Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings and turn on Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, if the option is available. Restart Windows if prompted. Bethesda also identifies this setting as a possible remedy for intermittent freezes on supported NVIDIA GPUs.
- Disable overlays and close background apps. Turn off Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, and third-party overlays while troubleshooting. Close unnecessary applications that use memory, particularly capture or monitoring software. If performance improves, re-enable tools one at a time to identify the conflict.
- Check the graphics driver. Bethesda’s support article lists NVIDIA driver 576.40 and AMD driver 25.5.1 as minimum versions at the time of that article. Driver support changes, so check Bethesda’s current guidance and your GPU vendor’s current driver information rather than treating those version numbers as permanently current.
- Lower the game’s graphics quality. Reduce options in the game’s Graphics settings and test the same situation again. If the issue began after custom changes, restore auto-detected settings; Steam players can also choose Launch in Safe Mode to help recover from problematic graphics settings.
- Make sure the game uses the intended GPU. On a laptop or other multi-GPU system, set the game executable to use the primary, high-performance GPU in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Adrenalin. Choose a high-performance Windows power profile and connect a laptop to power; a power-saving profile can route work to integrated graphics.
- Verify the game installation. Use the file-verification instructions for your storefront—Steam, Xbox app, or Battle.net—linked from Bethesda’s performance troubleshooting page. Also check that antivirus software is not blocking the game or launcher; use an exclusion only if appropriate for your security setup.
Match known workarounds to the symptom
Not every freeze or stutter has the same cause. Bethesda documents several specific conflicts in its PC troubleshooting guide; apply a workaround only when it matches your setup.
- RTX 50-series crash with synchronization and Multi Frame Generation: Bethesda describes a crash combination involving G-Sync or V-Sync and Multi Frame Generation configured through NVIDIA Control Panel. The suggested workaround is to disable one of those options in NVIDIA Control Panel or configure both in the game instead.
- MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner: Their overlays may cause stability problems. Disable the overlay while testing.
- OBS capture or background use: OBS may freeze visuals when using Alt-Tab capture in Fullscreen, and running OBS in the background can crash the game. Test with OBS closed or adjust the capture situation described by Bethesda.
- ShadowPlay with 3x or 4x Multi Frame Generation: On some RTX 50-series GPUs, this combination can cause TDRs or hangs. Disable the relevant capture or Multi Frame Generation setting to test the documented conflict.
- Intermittent freezes on supported NVIDIA hardware: Check that Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling is enabled, as described above.
If the problem persists
After the storage, scheduling, overlay, driver, settings, GPU-selection, and file-integrity checks, isolate software conflicts before considering a hardware purchase. Bethesda suggests testing with a new Windows user profile and then using Selective Startup to identify a conflicting program. Change one variable at a time and retest; that makes it easier to tell whether a background application or configuration change is responsible.

Bethesda’s performance page also notes that MSI Claw devices and systems using Intel Panther Lake processors are not supported and may have performance issues. Supported devices, game patches, driver requirements, and known workarounds can change, so consult the current official support article if your hardware or symptom is not covered here.
