G, PG and M are advisory classifications, while MA 15+ and R 18+ are legally restricted. ESRB categories are age-appropriateness suggestions, and PEGI uses numbered categories with its own criteria. The safest comparison is to check the exact local release, read its descriptors or consumer advice, and then apply your console or device’s parental controls.
Why the same game can have different ratings
Rating systems are regional schemes, not a shared worldwide scale. Each organization decides how to describe age suitability, how to explain content, and whether a label creates a legal access restriction. A number or letter that looks familiar can therefore mean something materially different in another territory.

For example, ESRB’s Mature 17+ category and Australia’s M category both concern stronger content, but they do not have the same meaning. Australian M is an advisory classification with no legal minimum age. Australia’s legally restricted category is MA 15+, not M. Treating the two M labels as equivalents can therefore give parents the wrong answer about access.

A comparison should therefore use more than the headline symbol. Ask what age guidance the system communicates, whether the label limits legal access, which content triggered the decision, and whether online or purchasing features are separately disclosed. Those questions produce a useful comparison without pretending that one country’s category is a legal translation of another’s.
Australian game ratings explained
Australian Classification describes the impact levels for computer games as follows:
| Australian category | Impact level | Access status |
|---|---|---|
| G | Very mild | Advisory |
| PG | Mild | Advisory |
| M | Moderate | Advisory |
| MA 15+ | Strong | Legally restricted |
| R 18+ | High | Legally restricted |
Australian Classification says, “Classifications for films and computer game consist of a rating and consumer advice.” The symbol is only part of the decision. Context matters: the work’s purpose, tone, style, detail, duration, realism and interactivity can all affect the perceived impact.
Recommended Free Tools
That context rule explains why two games with similar subject matter can land in different categories. A brief, stylised depiction may have a different impact from prolonged, realistic or interactive treatment. The category describes the overall level selected by the classification system; the advice identifies the elements parents and players should investigate.
What M means in Australia
Australian M means moderate-impact content that is not legally restricted. It is advice for parents and players, not a statutory minimum age of 15. A child younger than 15 is not automatically barred by the M label, although a parent may reasonably decide that the content is unsuitable.
Do not infer a specific subject from M alone. The accompanying advice may identify violence, coarse language, themes, drug use, nudity, sex, online interactivity or purchase mechanics. M is an overall impact category, not a shorthand for one particular type of content.
What MA 15+ means
MA 15+ signals strong-impact content and is legally restricted. It is a different category from M, even though both labels contain the letter M. Do not read MA 15+ as simply “a slightly stronger M”; the restriction is a central part of the classification.
In practical terms, a retailer, service or venue may need to prevent access by people under 15, subject to the applicable Australian rules and supervision arrangements. For a parent comparing labels, the key point is that MA 15+ carries a legal access consequence that Australian M does not.
What R 18+ means
R 18+ is the high-impact, legally restricted category. In games, simulated gambling receives a minimum classification of R 18+, making this label especially important when a title includes gambling-style play rather than merely competitive or chance-based rewards.
R 18+ is not a prediction that every overseas “Adults Only” or “PEGI 18” release will receive the same Australian result. The Australian authority considers the specific release and its context, so the local database entry remains decisive.
Consumer advice is essential in Australia
Australian ratings come with consumer advice that identifies impactful or frequent elements. Advice can cover themes, violence, coarse language, drug use, nudity and sex. Game entries can also identify online interactivity, in-game purchases, chance-based purchases and simulated gambling.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Two games with the same Australian symbol can therefore present very different concerns. One might be rated M because of violence; another might carry M advice about a chance-based purchase mechanic. The symbol tells you the overall impact level, while the advice explains what prompted concern.
Advice is particularly useful for a child who is sensitive to a specific subject. A parent may accept mild fantasy violence but avoid sexual material, or allow offline play while restricting online interaction. Reading the individual advice makes that decision possible; relying on the letter alone does not.
For a particular title, search its entry in the Australian Classification National Classification Database. Check that you have the right edition, platform or release, then read every listed advice element before deciding whether it is appropriate. Storefront descriptions and overseas packaging are not substitutes for the Australian entry.

How the three systems line up at a glance
| System | Main labels | What to inspect beyond the label | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australia | G, PG, M, MA 15+, R 18+ | Consumer advice about themes, violence, language, drugs, nudity, sex, online interactivity and purchases | G, PG and M are advisory; MA 15+ and R 18+ are legally restricted |
| ESRB | EC, E, E10+, T, M, AO; RP may appear while pending | Content descriptors and interactive elements | Categories suggest age appropriateness; interactive elements do not determine the rating |
| PEGI | 3, 7, 12, 16, 18 | Current PEGI content descriptors for the particular release | PEGI numbers apply to PEGI’s system and do not establish Australian legal access |
The systems overlap in purpose but not in operation. Australia combines impact wording with two restricted categories. ESRB combines an age-oriented category with descriptors and separate interactive notices. PEGI uses a numeric scale and descriptors. Comparing the full package is more accurate than comparing a single character or number.

How ESRB ratings work
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) uses these principal age categories:
| ESRB category | Label shown to consumers |
|---|---|
| EC | Early Childhood |
| E | Everyone |
| E10+ | Everyone 10+ |
| T | Teen |
| M | Mature 17+ |
| AO | Adults Only 18+ |
| RP | Rating Pending |
ESRB states, “Rating Categories suggest age appropriateness.” That wording is deliberate: the categories are guidance rather than a direct statement of legal access in every jurisdiction.
The “17+” in Mature 17+ should not be read as an Australian restriction. It is part of ESRB’s consumer-facing category name. Whether a person can legally buy or play a title in Australia depends on the Australian classification and applicable rules, not on the number printed in an ESRB badge.
Descriptors and interactive elements
An ESRB rating normally includes content descriptors. These identify content that may have triggered the rating or that parents and players may want to know about, such as violence, language or sexual material. Read them with the category rather than relying on the category alone.
ESRB also displays interactive elements. These can flag features such as user interaction or purchases. ESRB says interactive elements do not affect the rating assignment; they provide additional information about how a game operates or connects players. A purchase notice is therefore not itself an ESRB age category.
This distinction matters when comparing monetization notices. An ESRB interactive-purchase notice does not mean that every purchase caused the age category, while Australian advice may specifically identify a chance-based purchase. The notices answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Digital ratings and IARC
For digital games and mobile applications, the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) administers a streamlined process that can assign regional ratings through a common questionnaire. This helps explain why a digital storefront may show a rating generated through a different workflow from a conventional boxed-game submission. The displayed label still needs to be interpreted using the rules of the region where the game is being used.
A digital edition can also receive updated content, downloadable material or a different storefront listing. If the Australian classification database lists a particular edition, use that record rather than assuming that a boxed release, mobile version and downloadable version share identical advice.
How PEGI ratings work
PEGI uses five numbered categories: PEGI 3, PEGI 7, PEGI 12, PEGI 16 and PEGI 18. The number communicates the system’s age recommendation, and PEGI also supplies content descriptors for the specific release.
PEGI numbers are not Australian legal classifications. A PEGI 16 label does not by itself determine whether a person can legally obtain the game in Australia, and a PEGI 18 label does not establish that an Australian release must be R 18+. Use the PEGI label for the territory in which it was issued, then consult the Australian entry when making an Australian access decision.
As with the other systems, the number is only a starting point. A descriptor can reveal whether the concern involves violence, language, sexual content or another feature. Two PEGI 16 games may therefore be unsuitable for different reasons, just as two Australian M games can raise different concerns.
The commonly cited PEGI-to-Australia comparison
An Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) policy report published an illustrative correspondence between PEGI and Australian categories:
| PEGI category | Indicative Australian correspondence in the ALRC table |
|---|---|
| PEGI 3 | G |
| PEGI 7 | PG |
| PEGI 12 | M |
| PEGI 16 | MA 15+ |
| PEGI 18 | R 18+ |
This is an indicative policy comparison, not a current PEGI-issued conversion rule or an official universal conversion chart. It describes rough category correspondence, not identical content thresholds. It also cannot make the legal status of one system transfer to another. In particular, Australian M remains advisory even though the ALRC table places it beside PEGI 12.

The table is useful for orientation when someone asks how the scales broadly relate, but it should not be used to classify a title that has not yet been checked locally. The ALRC comparison does not say that every PEGI 12 game would receive Australian M, nor that every PEGI 16 game would receive MA 15+. It also does not account for later changes to a game, a different platform edition or a different presentation of the same material.
Why ESRB M is not the Australian equivalent of M
ESRB M means Mature 17+ in the ESRB scheme. Australian M means moderate impact and is advisory. The letters match, but the labels organize age guidance and access differently.
If you need an approximate content comparison, an ESRB M release may fall somewhere around Australia’s MA 15+ or R 18+ range, depending on the material and context. There is no authoritative one-to-one conversion that lets you make that decision from the letter alone. Compare the full local classification and the accompanying descriptors instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The same principle applies to ESRB T, E10+ or AO. A category can suggest a broad age range, but it does not tell you how an Australian board would classify the exact release, whether the Australian label is restricted, or which consumer-advice terms will appear.
It is also unsafe to assume that ESRB AO always means Australian R 18+, or that ESRB E always means Australian G. The labels are created under separate standards. The local authority may weigh context, realism, duration and interactivity differently, and the legal status attached to the result is determined in Australia.
Chance-based purchases and simulated gambling
Australian rules make gambling-like mechanics a particularly important point of difference.
Paid chance-based purchases
Paid in-game purchases that include an element of chance, such as loot boxes, receive a minimum Australian classification of M. This does not mean every in-game purchase triggers M. The threshold described by Australian Classification concerns a purchase linked to chance.
The Tool Desk

The relevant question is whether the buyer pays for an outcome that includes an element of chance. Check the Australian advice for the title rather than applying the term “loot box” to every transaction.
Simulated gambling
Simulated gambling receives a minimum classification of R 18+. A game that depicts or lets the player perform gambling-style activities can therefore be placed in a legally restricted category even when no real-money gambling service is involved.
Chance-based rewards and simulated gambling are not identical concepts. A game can include a paid chance-based item without presenting a simulated casino activity, while another can depict gambling without selling randomized items. The Australian advice and final category are the reliable way to distinguish them.
When checking a game, distinguish ordinary purchases from chance-based purchases and distinguish both from simulated gambling. Look for the relevant Australian consumer advice rather than inferring the result from a trailer, store description or an overseas rating.
A reliable method for comparing a specific game
Use this sequence whenever a game has labels from more than one system:
- Identify the exact release. Confirm the title, edition, platform and territory. A remaster, downloadable edition or regional release may have a separate entry.
- Find the Australian classification. Search the title in the Australian Classification National Classification Database.
- Read the Australian advice. Note themes, violence, language, drugs, nudity, sex, online interactivity, purchases, chance-based purchases and simulated gambling.
- Record the ESRB or PEGI information separately. Write down the full category and every descriptor shown for that release; do not reduce ESRB M to a bare “M” or PEGI 16 to a universal age rule.
- Check legal status in Australia. Treat G, PG and M as advisory; treat MA 15+ and R 18+ as legally restricted.
- Compare the reason, not just the label. Ask whether the concern is violence, language, sexual material, drug use, gambling-like mechanics, online interaction or another descriptor. Similar-looking categories may have been reached for different reasons.
- Apply household controls. Use the console, computer, phone or account’s built-in parental-control settings as an additional access measure. Controls can limit age-rated content, purchases, online communication or play time, depending on the device.
This method works for physical and digital games. It also prevents a common error: treating a storefront badge as proof that every regional version has the same content, advice or access rules.
What parents should look at first
Start with the Australian label because it answers the local legal question. Next, read the consumer advice to identify the specific issue. If the game is imported, digitally purchased while travelling, or discussed using an overseas review, check the Australian database entry rather than assuming the foreign label carries over.

For a child near an age boundary, the difference between M and MA 15+ matters more than a superficial similarity between Australian and ESRB letters. For a child sensitive to a particular subject, the advice descriptors matter more than the headline category. For online games, review the interactive and purchase notices as well as the content classification.

Parental controls are a second layer, not a replacement for classification advice. They can help enforce an account age, restrict purchases or limit communication, but settings vary by device and may not explain why a game received its rating. Read the local classification first, then configure controls to match your household decision.

Assuming every number is an age minimum
Australian M is not a legal minimum age of 15. The restricted Australian categories are MA 15+ and R 18+. Numbers in PEGI labels communicate PEGI’s guidance and do not rewrite Australian law.
Using an overseas label for an Australian purchase
Publishers can release the same game under different regional systems, and digital ratings can be assigned through regional processes. Verify the Australian database record for the edition being bought or played.
Ignoring the descriptors
A category alone cannot tell you whether the concern is violence, language, sexual material, drugs, online interaction or monetization. Read the associated advice or descriptors before making a suitability decision.
Calling every purchase a loot box
Australian treatment of chance-based purchases is specific. Ordinary paid content is not automatically treated as a chance-based purchase, so identify whether the transaction includes an element of chance.
Treating an indicative table as a legal conversion
The ALRC correspondence is useful for orientation, but it is not a binding PEGI conversion chart. Use it to understand broad relationships, then check the actual local classification.
Comparing only the letters
ESRB M, Australian M and MA 15+ share a visual letter but serve different functions. Always write the complete label, including “Mature 17+” for ESRB or “MA 15+” for Australia, before drawing a comparison.
Assuming an update cannot matter
A different edition, platform or release can have different content or advice. Verify the specific listing instead of relying on a rating remembered from an earlier version.

There is no single Australian equivalent of ESRB M. Depending on the game’s content, an ESRB M release could receive an Australian M, MA 15+ or R 18+ classification. The letter alone cannot decide it.
Australian M is not the same as PEGI 16. The ALRC’s illustrative table places PEGI 12 beside Australian M and PEGI 16 beside Australian MA 15+, but that table is only a rough policy comparison. It does not establish identical criteria or legal access.
For an Australian player, the dependable answer is the local rating and its consumer advice for the exact title. Use ESRB or PEGI information to understand the overseas release, not to replace the Australian classification.
Frequently asked questions
Is Australian M the same as ESRB M?
No. ESRB M means Mature 17+ in the ESRB system. Australian M means moderate impact and is advisory, with no legal minimum age. An Australian MA 15+ classification is legally restricted and is a separate category.

What is the Australian equivalent of ESRB M?
There is no fixed equivalent. Depending on content, context and interactivity, an ESRB M game could be classified M, MA 15+ or R 18+ in Australia. Compare the full local record, not just the ESRB letter.
Does Australian M mean children under 15 cannot play?
No. Australian M is advisory. The legally restricted categories are MA 15+ and R 18+. Parents can still decide that an M-rated game is unsuitable for a particular child.
Do all in-game purchases cause an Australian M rating?
No. The minimum M rule described by Australian Classification concerns paid purchases that include an element of chance, such as loot boxes. Ordinary fixed-price purchases are not automatically treated the same way.
Why can simulated gambling lead to R 18+?
Australian Classification gives simulated gambling a minimum R 18+ classification. That rule concerns gambling-style activity depicted or performed in the game, even when it is not a real-money gambling service.
Where can I check an Australian game rating?
Search the title in the Australian Classification National Classification Database and read the complete consumer advice. Confirm the edition and platform before relying on the result.
Are PEGI and ESRB ratings legally enforceable in Australia?
They are regional rating systems and do not replace Australian classifications. For an Australian access decision, use the Australian category: G, PG and M are advisory, while MA 15+ and R 18+ are legally restricted.
Should I use parental controls even after checking the rating?
They are useful as an additional safeguard. Depending on the device, controls can restrict age-rated content, purchases, online communication or play time. They supplement, rather than replace, the local rating and consumer advice.
