The two decisions work as a pair: a strong roster can leave a key unit exposed, while a protective formation cannot make up for missing damage, durability, or useful game-specific synergies.
What team composition means
A composition is more than a list of powerful units. It combines each unit’s individual strengths and role with the traits, alliances, or other group bonuses defined by that game. A bonus may reward particular combinations, but its thresholds and effects are specific to the game and can change over time.
For example, Riot describes Teamfight Tactics (TFT) as involving champion drafting, trait synergies, and items. A 2020 analysis of Dota Underlords likewise models team strength through chosen heroes and alliance bonuses, while treating upgrades and items as additional ways to strengthen heroes. Those examples illustrate how individual strength and group bonuses can interact; they do not establish a universal formula for team strength.
What positioning means
Positioning is the placement of units before a round’s automatic combat. The arrangement influences how units meet opponents and can affect which targets they can reach. Riot’s retrospective on TFT’s Monsters Attack! period discussed backline access as a source of positioning challenges, and noted that consistently removing a carry too quickly could undermine teams built around one damage dealer. These are design reflections from that period, not current instructions for particular units.

Exact tactical rules—including targeting, movement, attack range, and whether a unit can reach a vulnerable target—vary by game and may change with updates. A formation that works in one auto-battler, or one patch, should not be assumed to work in another.
How composition and placement work together
Think of composition as what your team can do and positioning as how it gets the chance to do it. For instance, protecting an important damage or utility unit may help it contribute, but the roster still needs enough damage, durability, and relevant bonuses to function. Conversely, a team with useful synergies may struggle if its most important unit is too exposed. This is a practical reasoning framework drawn from Riot’s discussion of synergies, flexible composition-building, and backline access—not a guaranteed outcome.

How to compare possible builds and formations
There is no single scoring system that applies to every auto-battler. Use the following questions as a comparison framework, then interpret the answers according to the game’s current rules:
Compare team builds
- Unit roles and strength: What does each unit contribute, and are essential roles covered?
- Synergies: Which traits, alliances, or bonuses actually activate, and what do they offer in this game?
- Resources and items: What does the build demand, and do available items support the units you intend to strengthen?
- Adaptability: Can you adjust if the units appearing in the draft do not match your initial plan?
- Exposure: Does the build depend heavily on one important damage or utility unit, and how vulnerable is it?
Compare formations
- Protection: Does the placement help vulnerable units survive long enough to contribute, according to the game’s rules?
- Target access: Can your units reach the opponents they are meant to threaten?
- Opponent response: Does the formation account for the opposing arrangement or its ability to reach your backline?
These questions synthesize factors Riot discusses for TFT—draft flexibility, traits, items, economy, and backline access. They are an analytical aid, not a Riot-published scorecard or a substitute for learning a particular game’s targeting and combat rules.

Why you need to adapt by game and patch
Auto-battlers share a broad loop of making decisions before combat and watching the fight resolve, but they do not necessarily share a roster, board, resource system, targeting rules, or synergy thresholds. Riot describes TFT as a round-based PvP auto-battler with shared-pool drafting, team-building, economy management, items, and positioning, and emphasizes adapting from game to game. Its design discussion also treats flexible composition-building in response to the draft as a skill.
Specific unit recommendations, trait breakpoints, item combinations, and placement advice are therefore volatile. Riot’s official TFT page displayed patch 18.2 news for Enchanted Wilds dated September 9, 2026, describing it as the set’s first main patch and noting buffs and Wisp cost changes. That dated context is not a recommendation for the current best team or formation. Check the named game’s live patch information before relying on tactics about particular units or numbers.
