What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes. In The Sims 4, newborns and infants age up automatically when aging is enabled. The time they remain in the current stage is controlled by the lifespan selected in Game Options. If aging is turned off, the automatic transition does not happen; you can leave the Sim at that stage or use an in-game birthday interaction when it is available.
When does a baby age up automatically?
Automatic aging is conditional, not guaranteed in every save. The game checks the aging setting first. With aging enabled, a baby progresses through the life stages according to the lifespan option you selected. With aging disabled, the game does not advance that baby on its own.

That distinction explains most cases in which a player says a baby is “stuck.” A long wait is not, by itself, proof of a bug. Before changing the household, deleting the Sim, or looking for custom content conflicts, verify that aging is actually on and identify which lifespan your save is using.

The life-stage order matters
The young-Sim sequence relevant to this question is newborn, then infant. Newborns are the earliest baby stage. After the newborn period ends, the Sim becomes an infant; later transitions are separate age-ups and are not part of the newborn-to-infant timing.

EA’s newborn update announcement describes that stage as lasting “only a few days” before the Sim ages into an infant. That wording belongs to the update context and should not be treated as a universal, current number for every lifespan choice. The exact interval depends on the setting in your game.
How lifespan settings change the wait
The lifespan selector determines how quickly Sims move through their stages. A baby in a shorter lifespan will reach the next transition sooner than a baby in a longer lifespan. Because the available duration depends on the active setting and game version, there is no single day count that is safe to promise for every player.
To check the setting, open the game’s options, go to the gameplay settings, and inspect the aging and lifespan controls. Confirm both parts:

- Lifespan: the pace selected for that save, which controls how long stages last.
Do this while the affected save is loaded, since the setting you need to diagnose is the one governing that game. If you recently changed lifespan, use the new selection as your reference rather than an old estimate from another save or a different playthrough.
Why an exact “baby age-up day” is unreliable
Players often look for a fixed number of in-game days for every newborn. The available EA guidance does not establish a complete, current duration table covering every lifespan. It confirms the relationship between aging and lifespan, but it does not justify presenting one number as universal.
For practical planning, treat the setting as the controlling variable. A short lifespan means planning for an earlier transition; a long lifespan gives more time in the stage. If you need the change immediately, use the manual option described below instead of trying to infer a day count from another save.
What to check if a newborn or infant is not aging
Work through these checks in order. They separate an intentional setting from a genuine gameplay problem without assuming that a delay is a bug.

1. Verify that automatic aging is enabled
Return to the gameplay options and look at the aging control. If it is off, the game is behaving as configured: the baby will not age up automatically. Turn aging on if you want normal progression, then resume the save and allow the game to run.
2. Confirm the selected lifespan
A lifespan setting can make a stage feel unusually short or unusually long. Check whether the save is using a short, normal, or long pace (or another option shown by your edition). Do not compare the current baby with a remembered schedule from a save that used a different pace.
3. Identify the current stage
Make sure the Sim is actually a newborn or infant. The newborn-to-infant change is one transition; an infant waiting for a later birthday is a different situation. The game’s age-stage information and the Sim’s appearance can help you distinguish them, especially after loading an older save.
4. Avoid treating a few days as a universal deadline
The phrase “a few days” appears in EA’s announcement about the newborn stage, but it is not a complete timing chart for all current settings. If your selected lifespan allows a longer interval, waiting beyond an expectation based on that phrase does not prove the save is broken.
5. Decide whether you want to wait or age up manually
Once the settings are correct, you have two legitimate choices: leave aging enabled and let the game perform the transition, or use an available birthday interaction to trigger an age-up. Choosing the second path avoids guessing how much time remains.
How to age an infant up manually
EA’s accepted forum solution identifies an in-game method: an adult can help an infant blow out the candles on a birthday cake. This is a gameplay interaction, not a requirement to purchase a real-world cake or a separate product.
- Prepare a birthday cake in the household. The cake is made and used inside The Sims 4.
- Add birthday candles through the cake’s available interaction, if the game has not already prompted you to do so.
- Select an adult Sim and use the interaction that lets the adult help the infant blow out the candles.
- Complete the interaction. When the action succeeds, the infant receives the age-up and becomes the next life stage.
The documented instruction specifically refers to helping an infant. It should not be read as a promise that every newborn can immediately use the same cake interaction. If the Sim is still a newborn, first confirm the life stage and, with aging enabled, allow the normal newborn-to-infant transition unless your game presents a different supported interaction.

What the manual method does—and does not—change
A cake-triggered age-up changes the Sim’s life stage; it does not alter the lifespan setting for the rest of the save. Other Sims continue to follow the aging configuration that is active. If you turn aging off after manually aging one infant, automatic progression for the remaining Sims will still be governed by that setting.

The two configurations produce different outcomes. Use this comparison when deciding whether the behavior in your save is expected.
| Game setting | What happens to the baby | Best choice when |
|---|---|---|
| Aging enabled | The newborn or infant progresses automatically according to the selected lifespan. | You want the household to follow the normal passage of time. |
| Aging disabled | No automatic age-up occurs, so the baby remains in the current stage until you change the setting or use an available manual interaction. | You are building a story, pose, challenge, or family setup that needs a stage to remain fixed. |
This setting is the key answer to the question “Why isn’t my baby growing up?” If it is disabled, the lack of an automatic birthday is an intentional result rather than evidence of a corrupted save.
Newborns and infants are not interchangeable
“Baby” is common player shorthand, but the game distinguishes newborns from infants. The distinction matters for both timing and interactions.
Newborn
A newborn is the earliest stage in the sequence. EA’s update material says this stage lasts only a few days before the Sim ages into an infant, with the actual experience still affected by the lifespan setting. The available guidance does not provide one exact number that applies to every current save.
Infant
An infant is the next stage after newborn. An adult can help an infant blow out birthday-cake candles, providing a manual age-up route when you do not want to wait for automatic progression. If a cake interaction is missing, recheck that the Sim is an infant and that the cake has the required candles interaction available.

“Aging on” does not mean every stage lasts the same time
Enabling aging permits progression; it does not create one fixed schedule independent of lifespan. The selected pace still determines how long the stage lasts.

A delayed birthday is not automatically a bug
A player’s remembered day count may come from another lifespan, another save, or the newborn update’s broad “few days” description. Check the active controls before diagnosing a technical failure.
You do not need a real cake or an extra purchase
The birthday-cake method uses an object and interaction inside the game. The basic aging behavior is controlled by the game settings; a separate physical product is not required.
Manual aging is optional
Turning aging on lets the game handle the transition. The cake interaction is an alternative for players who want to choose the moment. Neither method requires changing the other households’ story or buying an expansion solely to make automatic aging work.
A practical decision path
Use this short path whenever a newborn or infant appears not to be growing:
- Open gameplay options. If aging is off, decide whether to enable it.
- Read the lifespan selection. Use that pace when judging how long the stage should last.
- Check the life-stage label. Separate newborn timing from infant timing.
- Choose your outcome. Keep aging enabled and wait, or prepare the in-game cake interaction for an infant.
- Reassess only after those checks. If the settings and stage are correct, document what you see before making further changes to the save.
This approach avoids the two most common errors: expecting a universal number of days and trying to use the infant cake interaction on a Sim who is still a newborn.
What is established—and what is not
The supported answer is clear on the core behavior: babies age up on their own when aging is enabled, and the lifespan setting controls the interval. With aging disabled, automatic progression stops. An adult can help an infant blow out birthday-cake candles for a manual age-up.
