But Sacramento has not announced Simmons as its point guard or assigned him a settled role: the Kings’ 2026–27 preview says Acuff is poised to take control of the offense and leaves Simmons’s role open. Any point-forward impact is therefore a possibility to evaluate, not a change already demonstrated in Kings games.
What is confirmed about Simmons and Sacramento?
Simmons did not play in 2025–26. His last NBA season was 2024–25, when he appeared in 51 games for Brooklyn and the LA Clippers and averaged 5.0 points, 5.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds in 22.0 minutes per game. Those are his combined results for that season, not a projection of what he will produce in Sacramento. NBA.com’s September 8, 2026 signing report says Sacramento officially announced his one-year agreement.
The Kings have a stated plan for a young lead guard. NBA.com’s 2026–27 preview says seventh overall pick Darius Acuff Jr. is poised to take control of the offense. Acuff averaged 23.5 points and 6.4 assists and shot 44% from three in his freshman season at Arkansas; those are college figures, not evidence of how he will perform in the NBA. The preview describes Simmons’s ultimate role as an open question.
That distinction matters: a point forward is a player who initiates or directs possessions from a forward-sized role. The label does not, by itself, mean Simmons will be Sacramento’s primary point guard, a starter or a closer. The preview also frames the season as an identity-building exercise for coach Doug Christie, who must integrate returning players and new additions.

How could Simmons change the Kings’ possessions?
Starting offense before the defense is set
If Simmons collects a defensive rebound and pushes the ball, Sacramento could attack before opponents organize their half-court defense. That is a different potential benefit from running a set offense: advancing the ball quickly can create an early opportunity even if the possession does not end in a Simmons assist. Whether the Kings gain that advantage will depend on their transition decisions and execution.
Sharing creation with Acuff
With Acuff handling the first action, Simmons could serve as a secondary initiator—receiving the ball after the defense shifts, moving it to a teammate in a better position, or directing a possession when Acuff is not on the floor. Staggered minutes or a second-unit role might make that division possible, but Sacramento has not confirmed such a rotation plan.

His 5.6 assists per game in 2024–25 show that passing was a meaningful part of his last played-season production. They do not establish his current readiness, the quality of chances he would create in Sacramento, or how many minutes he might receive after missing the entire 2025–26 season.
What could the point-forward approach cost?
Spacing and half-court pressure
A lineup with Simmons handling could add size and another passer. It could also give opponents a reason to help off him, potentially crowding driving lanes for Acuff and other Kings. The available team preview does not establish Simmons’s current shooting level or the spacing of any proposed lineup, so the effect cannot be treated as settled. The practical question is whether the other players on the floor make defenses pay for leaving him.

Passing is not the same as creating an advantage. The useful measure is whether Simmons’s decisions lead to rim pressure, open shots or a defense forced into rotation—not simply whether the ball moves safely. A possession can remain organized without producing a scoring opportunity.
Fit with Sacramento’s returning players
The Kings’ preview points to the importance of integrating the roster and flags the health of returning players including Zach LaVine, Keegan Murray and Domantas Sabonis. Their availability and the lineups they share with Simmons would shape where he can operate and how much shooting surrounds him. No Sacramento lineup data exist to establish that fit yet.

How to judge the fit when the season begins
Sacramento finished 2025–26 at 22–60, with the league’s 26th-ranked offense at a 110.6 rating, according to the team preview. That describes the team’s prior-season baseline; Simmons did not play that season, so it says nothing about his effect on the Kings.
Preseason and early-season rotations can reveal the intended division of work, but a few appearances are not enough to establish a lasting offensive impact. Watch who brings the ball up, starts the first action and handles late-clock possessions, and note whether those duties change when Acuff sits. Compare lineups by their credible shooting, transition chances, turnovers under pressure and the advantages Simmons’s passing actually creates. Sustained lineup minutes and possession-level film or statistics are more informative than a small early sample.
