For Tears of the Kingdom, an independent 2023 estimate puts the explorable world—surface, Sky Islands, and Depths—at about 138.22 km² (53.36 mi²), with a stated margin of ±5%. Nintendo describes those regions but does not publish an official area total.
What does “map size” mean in Zelda?
A map can mean the land surface alone, the outline of the whole region including water, or every explorable layer combined. Those are different measurements. In Tears of the Kingdom (TotK), that distinction matters because Hyrule’s world includes its surface, floating Sky Islands, and the underground Depths.
Nintendo’s official game page describes exploring Hyrule’s land, sky, and depths. It does not give a total area in square kilometers or square miles.
How large is the Tears of the Kingdom world?
Sunowaddle, an independent creator, estimated TotK’s combined explorable world at 138.22 km² (53.36 mi²), with an uncertainty of ±5%, in 2023. The calculation combines the surface, Sky Islands, and Depths; it is not an official Nintendo measurement. The same calculation reports these layer estimates:

The creator’s estimates are available in the 2023 calculation. The layer figures are estimates, not surveyed official areas; the stated uncertainty is important when interpreting them.
Why is there another Hyrule area estimate?
A separate Reddit community calculation estimates Hyrule’s land area, excluding sea, at 74.88 km². That is not interchangeable with Sunowaddle’s 74.1 km² surface estimate: the calculations use different methods and definitions, and the community figure is not the combined surface-plus-sky-plus-Depths total. Why the sky and Depths change the comparison
TotK continues the Hyrule setting associated with Breath of the Wild, but it adds explorable sky regions and the Depths. Nintendo director Hidemaro Fujibayashi described a design challenge in the developer interview: “But when we created the skies to scale on a seamless map and added features like floating stepping stones, they appeared too small from the ground and only looked like loose specks of trash.” The interview also discusses a dungeon connected directly to Hyrule’s surface. These design details help explain why a surface-only figure cannot represent every part of the playable world.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you rank the Zelda games by map size?
Not from the available measurements. A fair comparison needs consistent definitions and methods across games; the figures above do not provide that. One estimate counts TotK’s three layers, while the community calculation focuses on land excluding sea. Neither establishes a franchise-wide ranking, and Nintendo’s cited public sources do not provide an official numeric area for TotK.

When evaluating a map-size claim, check:
- Which game and version the figure refers to.
- Whether it counts land only, sea, or the boundary of a full map.
- Whether separate vertical regions, inaccessible areas, or only explorable terrain are included.
- Who made the calculation, when it was published, and whether an uncertainty is given.
Without those details, two numbers labeled “Hyrule’s size” may be measuring different things rather than disagreeing about the same area.
