BioWare’s answer is that Dragon Age: The Veilguard keeps faith with the series through continuing mysteries, returning characters and a world that players can recognize—even as it introduces a new hero, a new setting focus and changes to how the game plays. In a September 2024 interview with io9, game director Corrinne Busche and producer Jen Cheverie described those choices as ways to carry the series forward and welcome newcomers without requiring them to know every earlier plot thread. That is the developers’ account of their goals, not a measure of how every player will experience the finished game.
What BioWare means by “true to Dragon Age”
Busche describes Dragon Age as a series that changes its protagonist and locations from game to game while letting unresolved mysteries carry over. For The Veilguard, that meant addressing the danger left looming at the end of Inquisition while putting a new character and a different part of the world at the center.
In that framing, continuity does not require repeating the same hero, setting or mechanics. It comes from returning to the series’ broader conflicts and lore, bringing selected characters and factions forward, and building companion stories within that world.
Rook is a new protagonist built for player expression
Unlike a returning lead, Rook is intended to be a character players shape for themselves. Cheverie said the team paid deliberate attention to the character creator, including hairstyles and complexion, so players could make a Rook they wanted to see on screen.

That emphasis distinguishes the new hero by giving players a role in defining their appearance. The interview does not frame Rook as a continuation of one earlier protagonist; the new lead fits the series’ pattern of changing its central character between entries.
The opening is meant to help newcomers and lapsed players catch up
Busche said the first hours focus on establishing who Solas is, what the immediate next step is, and why players should continue. Her stated aim was to provide enough orientation for people who are new to the series or returning after a long break, while letting longtime lore threads gain new information as the game progresses.

That approach treats onboarding and ongoing lore as compatible goals: players do not need every past detail to understand the opening situation, while familiar mysteries can still matter later. These are the developers’ intentions as described in the interview, rather than a claim that every player will find the story equally accessible.
Earlier games informed specific design choices
Asked how the team chose what to carry forward, Busche described evaluating features for their fit with the story and the development context. She summarized that test as: “Was this right for the story, and how would it help us?” The interview gives examples from across Dragon Age rather than a detailed comparison with Mass Effect.

These are the developers’ stated points of reference, not a claim that the new game reproduces each predecessor’s systems wholesale.
Returning characters connect the new setting to the old
The team wanted to explore Northern Thedas and Tevinter, areas Busche discussed as part of the game’s new setting focus. The interview also highlights Harding’s return: Busche said it responded to player interest and offered an opportunity to develop Harding’s story and explore dwarven history.

Not every character is new. Strife and Irelin, also named in the interview, come from Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights. The book offers optional expanded-universe context; the interview does not suggest that reading it is required to follow the game.

Cheverie’s concise description of the team’s aim was, “This feels like Dragon Age, this is it.” Taken alongside Busche’s examples, the remark points to a particular idea of continuity: preserve the franchise’s unresolved stories and companion focus, draw selectively on earlier games, and make room for a new lead and a new part of Thedas.
