Before buying, verify the series contents, any disclosed probability information, whether you are buying one box or a whole set, how duplicates are handled, and what the seller accepts as a return or defect. If you open a duplicate, trading can be practical, but the venue’s rules and your own agreement determine what protection you actually have.

What a blind box actually contains
The series is identified; the figure is concealed
A blind box is mystery packaging for a collectible figure. The outer packaging normally identifies the collection or character series and may show the possible designs, while an inner package keeps the specific figure hidden. You know the menu of possible outcomes, but not which one is in your box until the reveal.

That distinction matters when comparing listings. A product described only as a “series” does not tell you whether the seller is offering a current release, a particular assortment, a single box, or a complete set. Read the exact listing for edition, language, region, and contents before paying.

Standard, secret, hidden, and chase figures
Many series combine ordinary designs with less common figures called secret, hidden, or chase figures. Their existence does not mean one will appear in your purchase. POP MART’s US FAQ states that the chance of a secret edition varies by series and that a secret is not guaranteed, except where a series is specifically marked as including one.
Do not transfer a secret-figure expectation from one collection to another. A seller’s photograph, an unboxing video, or a community pull list can show what is possible without establishing the probability for your exact product.
How blind-box odds work
Odds belong to a specific series and format
There is no single “blind-box odds” rate. Any probability applies to a named series and sometimes to a particular purchase format, such as an individual box, a partial assortment, or a sealed whole set. Use the odds printed on the packaging or disclosed by the manufacturer or seller for that exact item. If no probability is disclosed, treat the chance as unestablished rather than substituting a familiar rate from another series.
Also check whether the stated chance describes a secret figure, each individual design, or the distribution of a complete assortment. Those are different questions. A statement that a secret is possible does not tell you its pull rate, and a whole-set description does not automatically promise a secret.

What probability can—and cannot—tell you
If a seller provides a per-box probability p for a particular outcome and boxes are genuinely independent, the chance of seeing that outcome at least once in n boxes is 1 − (1 − p)n. This is a mathematical illustration, not a claim about any series. Real packaging may use assortment rules, case-level collation, or other arrangements that make independence uncertain. Never use the formula to create an odds figure the seller did not publish.
Probability also does not promise a result within a fixed number of openings. A run of ordinary figures can occur even when a secret is possible, while an early secret does not prove that later boxes are less likely to contain one.
Disclosure depends on jurisdiction
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation issued trial guidance dated June 15, 2023. It says key information for mystery products—including draw rules, product distribution, quantities of limited items, draw probability, and value range—should be prominently disclosed. The guidance also addresses record keeping and misleading promotion. It is Chinese guidance, not a worldwide blind-box law.
Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs said on February 12, 2026, that regulations were being drafted and that mandatory standardized disclosure of odds and probability ranges would be considered. That statement did not say such a rule was already in force. For any purchase, apply the law and consumer protections of the place where you buy, and check for updates because policy can change.

Why duplicates happen
Individual and partial purchases
Buying separate boxes can produce the same design more than once. POP MART’s UK after-sales policy treats duplicates in individual or non-whole-set purchases as normal rather than as a quality problem. Its Singapore policy states the same principle. A duplicate is therefore usually an expected consequence of a random assortment, not evidence that the box was defective or opened before sale.
Duplicates become more likely when you continue buying after obtaining several designs, especially if the series has a small standard lineup. Decide in advance whether your goal is to enjoy random reveals, complete a set, or obtain one specific figure; each goal calls for a different spending limit.
Does a whole set prevent duplicates?
“Whole set” is a seller-specific term, not a universal guarantee. In the cited POP MART regional policies, a duplicate in a purchased whole set is treated differently from a duplicate in an individual or partial purchase, subject to verification and the applicable regional terms. That treatment does not establish that every whole set from every seller contains one of each design, and it does not guarantee a secret figure.

Opening, defects, and returns
Record the condition before opening
Keep the order confirmation, listing, packaging, and any seal intact until you have checked the item. Photograph or video the outer condition if the seller requires evidence for a shipping problem or a manufacturing fault. A duplicate and a defect are different claims: a repeated design may be normal, while a broken, incomplete, or misdescribed item may qualify for a remedy.

Change-of-mind returns are not universal
POP MART’s UK page says opened blind boxes are not eligible for change-of-mind returns under its stated policy, while distinguishing faulty or misdescribed goods. POP MART Singapore has its own after-sales time limits and says those terms do not exclude applicable consumer guarantees. These are regional examples, not a substitute for reading the actual seller’s policy or your local law.
Before opening, find the policy section covering opened mystery products, cancellation, defects, missing parts, and incorrect listings. Note the deadline, required photographs, condition requirements, and whether the seller or manufacturer handles the claim. If a policy conflicts with mandatory consumer rights where you live, seek local consumer guidance rather than assuming the store’s wording is final.
How to decide what to buy
Compare the format, not just the price
A low per-box price can become expensive when your goal is a particular design. Compare the total amount you are willing to spend with the cost of a verified whole set or a direct trade for the figure you want. The relevant comparison is not merely “one box versus one set”; it is the cost, uncertainty, duplicate exposure, and remedy attached to each format.

- Identify the exact series name, edition, region, and release shown in the listing.
- Confirm whether the offer is for one box, a partial assortment, or a whole set.
- Read any printed or online odds disclosure for that series and determine what the probability refers to.
- Check whether a secret is merely possible or expressly included under the product description.
- Verify the seller’s authenticity signals, item condition, and stated contents.
- Read duplicate, defect, opened-box, cancellation, and return terms for your purchase region.
- Set a maximum total spend before opening anything, especially if you are pursuing one design.
Trading duplicate figures
Agree on the exact item
Trading is a practical way to turn an unwanted duplicate into a design you prefer, but there is no universal blind-box trading process or guarantee. Write down the series, figure name or identifying code, edition, and condition. State whether the figure is complete, whether accessories and the original box are included, and disclose scratches, paint flaws, or opened packaging.

Choose a venue you understand
Use a marketplace, community, or local exchange whose rules you have read. The available evidence does not establish a standard escrow service, fee schedule, dispute remedy, or buyer protection for all trading venues. Do not assume that a platform will replace an item or refund a failed swap unless its published terms say so.
Keep records and reduce avoidable risk
- Save the listing, messages, agreed trade details, and shipping receipts.
- Exchange current photographs that show the figure, accessories, and packaging.
- Agree who pays postage, how tracking is used, and what happens if a parcel is damaged or lost.
- Use a payment or exchange method only after checking its protections and exclusions.

Common buyer questions, answered by the rules
“If I buy a full set, will I get duplicates?”
Not necessarily, and the answer depends on the exact product and seller. A whole-set listing may receive different duplicate treatment from individual purchases under that seller’s policy, but “whole set” is not a universal packaging standard. Ask the seller to state the exact contents and whether the set is factory sealed before ordering.

“Can I return a box after seeing the figure?”
Do not assume so. Some regional policies exclude opened blind boxes from change-of-mind returns while still addressing faulty or misdescribed goods. Check the policy that applies to your location before breaking the seal.
“Is a secret figure guaranteed after enough boxes?”
No guarantee follows from buying more boxes unless the specific product terms expressly provide one. A secret chance varies by series, and a run of ordinary figures does not create an entitlement to the next reveal.

- Inspect on arrival. Check seals and exterior damage before opening; document issues according to the seller’s requirements.
- Open and catalogue. Record each figure and retain packaging until you are satisfied there is no defect or misdescription.
- Handle repeats deliberately. Keep, gift, sell, or trade duplicates using a venue and terms you understand.
The safest expectation is simple: you are buying a chance to receive one item from a defined series, not a guaranteed rarity. Verify the specific listing and policy every time, because odds, assortment practices, availability, and regional remedies can change.
