How Catchers Can Improve Their Framing Under MLB’s 2026 ABS Challenge System

Under MLB’s 2026 ABS Challenge System, catchers still need clean receiving and smart challenge judgment. Here’s how to train and evaluate both separately.

Framing still matters under MLB’s 2026 Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System. A catcher’s receiving can influence the umpire’s initial call; a challenge is a separate skill that can overturn an incorrect call. The useful approach is to train quiet, controlled receiving and make challenge decisions with the count, game situation and remaining challenges in mind.

Framing and challenging are different skills

MLB Statcast defines catcher framing as receiving a pitch in a way that makes an umpire more likely to call it a strike, either by gaining a borderline strike or by not losing a strike because of poor receiving. Under the 2026 system, Statcast scores framing from the umpire’s initial call and tracks the change from that call to the final call separately as challenge skill. An overturned call therefore does not erase or cancel the catcher’s framing value on the pitch.

The distinction matters in practice. Receiving is about presenting the pitch cleanly to the umpire; challenge judgment is about identifying a likely error and deciding whether correcting it is valuable in the current situation. Neither ability should be treated as a substitute for the other.

What the 2026 ABS Challenge System changes for catchers

MLB introduced its ABS Challenge System for the 2026 season. Hawk-Eye tracks a pitch against the individual batter’s strike zone. Baseball Savant documents the top of that zone at 53.5% of the batter’s measured height without cleats and the bottom at 27%; pitch location is measured above the middle of home plate, not at its front. Catchers should account for the batter-specific zone rather than imagine one fixed rectangle for everyone.

  • Each team starts a game with two challenges. A successful challenge is retained; a confirmed call costs a challenge. MLB’s rules explainer describes additional challenge availability in extra innings for a team that starts an inning without one.
  • Only the batter, pitcher or catcher may initiate a challenge. The player taps the cap or helmet; saying “challenge” is encouraged, but the tap is the official signal. The result appears on the board and broadcast.
  • A challenge opportunity is a rule-eligible called pitch where the call went against the player’s team and a challenge remains. Swings, calls that went the team’s way, having no challenges left, a position player pitching and technical interruptions are excluded.

Not every opportunity is a sensible challenge. Baseball Savant’s 2026 documentation says roughly 50% of pitches were challenge opportunities, while roughly 5% were “reasonable pitches” under its definition, which considers location, run value and challenge probability. Those percentages describe different measures, not the share of pitches a catcher should challenge.

How to improve pitch framing

Good receiving is controlled presentation, not a last-second theatrical pull. Little League’s Catching 101 guidance recommends a relaxed hand and little glove or body movement, and advises beating the ball to its location rather than stabbing at it. It describes a quiet presentation as making the pitch look as though it was thrown directly to the target. Treat these as coaching cues to adapt to the catcher, pitch and level—not a proven universal glove path.

Establish a relaxed, repeatable receive

Work toward a setup that lets the catcher move the hand quickly while staying balanced. Receive the ball early and smoothly, without an exaggerated movement after it arrives. A coach should adapt the position to the catcher’s mobility, equipment and body; the goal is a controlled receive, not forcing every catcher into the same stance.

Vary locations and pitch types

Use drills that require receiving pitches in different locations rather than rehearsing one fixed glove route. MLB reported that the Twins’ development program used pitches from machines and considered catchers’ positioning and individual strengths. That is an example of one professional program, not a validated formula for every age or player.

Use movement drills only with suitable coaching

The Twins program also included bare-hand work with gently tossed weighted balls and resistance bands to reinforce certain movements. MLB’s report does not establish a universal dosage, safety threshold or proof that these tools improve framing. A qualified coach should decide whether a drill and its load are suitable, particularly for younger catchers.

Review what happens on the field

Use Statcast’s zone-level called-strike rates and framing runs to find patterns in receives and misses. Where sample sizes permit, separate results by pitch type, pitcher hand, batter side and month. Examine difficult strikes gained as well as potential strikes lost; a season total alone can hide the locations or contexts where receiving needs work.

When should a catcher challenge a called ball?

A pitch being close is not enough by itself. MLB’s documented confidence framework weighs the situation’s run value, including count, outs and runners. Its example says that for a situation worth 0.3 runs, a 40% confidence point is the breakeven for a challenge. That is an illustration of the model, not a universal coaching threshold: the value of a correction changes with the game state.

  1. Confirm eligibility. It must be a called pitch that went against your team, and your team must have a challenge remaining.
  2. Recall the pitch and zone. Consider where it crossed above the middle of the plate and the batter’s individual zone.
  3. Assess the game state. Account for the count, outs and runners rather than treating every ball as equally important.
  4. Challenge promptly only when justified. Follow the team’s communication plan and make the official cap or helmet tap. Confirm challenge procedures with coaches; clubs may not use their own ball-tracking systems for challenges.

The count can make a single call consequential. MLB’s 2025 example gives a .806 OPS after a 1-0 count versus a .607 OPS after an 0-1 count. That illustrates why a corrected call can matter, but it does not mean every close pitch in that count is worth challenging.

How to evaluate framing and challenge performance separately

Question Useful measure How to read it
How is the catcher receiving pitches? Called-strike rates and framing runs by zone Look for repeatable patterns near the edges, then consider pitch type, pitcher hand, batter side and sample size.
How often does the catcher challenge? Challenge rate among eligible opportunities Interpret it alongside remaining challenges and game situations; a raw percentage does not show whether decisions were good.
How often does a challenge change the call? Challenge success or overturn rate This measures challenge outcomes, not receiving quality or a catcher’s framing skill.
How much does a call matter? Situation-sensitive run value or expected challenges Count, outs and runners affect the value of a correction; an overturned call is not equally valuable in every state.

Statcast’s current leaderboard glossary uses .125 runs per strike as its framing-run conversion basis. This is a scoring convention, not a promise that a particular catcher will produce that many runs from any individual strike. MLB lists Patrick Bailey at +25 catcher framing runs and Edgar Quero at -13 for 2025 as season examples; those totals should be read in the context of the metric and the season, not as a forecast.

Challenge accuracy should not be inferred from framing numbers. MLB’s 2025 Triple-A analysis reported nearly 55% success for fielders—pitchers and catchers combined—versus 45% for hitters. Early 2026 Spring Training figures were 55% for fielders and 48% for hitters. MLB cautioned that minor-league players and umpires are not a one-to-one proxy for MLB. Its examples of two MLB catchers with similar 2025 framing results but different Triple-A challenge accuracy further show why the skills should be assessed independently.

For the first MLB ABS season, an Associated Press report published October 2, 2026, said 54% of challenged calls were overturned and catchers were substantially more successful than batters. That is a season-level result reported on that date; it does not show that a particular framing technique caused the success or predict an individual catcher’s results.

Build a catcher’s review routine

Review receiving and challenges as separate parts of the same game. For receiving, identify locations where calls or presentation repeatedly go well or poorly. For challenges, review only eligible opportunities and compare the decision with the count, outs, runners and remaining challenges. This makes it easier to distinguish a receiving issue from a decision-making issue without attributing every umpire call to the catcher.

The evidence available from MLB’s metrics, the Twins’ reported drills and Little League’s instruction supports these as practical coaching approaches, not as proof of one best ABS-era stance, drill or glove movement. No cited source establishes that a specific practice tool improves challenge accuracy.
