The exact values depend on the skill, weapon, modifiers, and game version, so treat patch-note item numbers as version-specific rather than universal rules.
How does critical-hit chance work in Path of Exile 2?
Critical-hit chance is the chance that a hit becomes a critical hit. A higher chance means critical hits occur more often; it does not, by itself, increase the damage of each critical hit. The community-maintained Path of Exile 2 wiki describes the general model as starting with a skill’s or weapon’s base chance and then applying relevant chance modifiers.
That model is useful for understanding a build, but it is not a complete formula for every skill and enemy. The available official notes do not establish every cap, condition, or interaction. Check the live skill and item wording for your current game version before relying on an exact chance calculation.
Do attacks and spells get critical chance from the same place?
Not necessarily. The community wiki says attacks usually use the weapon’s base critical-hit chance, while spells and some other skills have a base chance on the skill itself. This distinction matters when evaluating gear: a weapon’s base chance may be central to an attack, but it should not automatically be treated as the base chance for a spell.

#1 Best Overall
When comparing two options, identify the chance source first, then account for modifiers that apply to that skill or weapon. Also check whether a modifier is local to an item or applies more broadly; the source set does not settle every local-versus-global interaction.
How is critical damage calculated?
Critical damage bonus determines the additional damage dealt when a hit crits. The community wiki gives the default player critical damage bonus as +100%. As a conceptual illustration, that means a critical hit deals 200% of its pre-critical damage before other critical damage modifiers: the ordinary damage, plus an additional 100%.
Rank #2
The wiki describes modifiers to critical damage bonus as being added to the +100% base before increases or reductions and more/less modifiers are applied. This outlines a general sequence, not an exhaustive formula for every skill, modifier, or damage interaction. Do not assume every source of critical damage is additive in the same step, or use this description alone to calculate a specific build’s final damage.
Keep the two levers distinct when assessing a build: chance affects how often the critical result occurs; critical damage bonus affects the result when it occurs. A meaningful comparison also considers ordinary hit damage and attack or cast speed, not just the largest displayed critical stat.

What did Path of Exile 2 patch 0.3.0 change?
Grinding Gear Games’ version 0.3.0 patch notes, published in 2025, document substantial changes to several critical-related item values. These are historical values from that patch, not a guarantee that later updates left them unchanged.
| Item or modifier | Version 0.3.0 change |
|---|---|
| Martial Weapon critical damage bonus modifiers | Maximum roll reduced from +39% to +25%. |
| Martial Weapon corruption implicit | Changed from +10–15% to +5–10% to Critical Damage Bonus. The notes say existing items are unaffected by this change. |
| Critical Hit Chance for Spells modifiers on Wands and Foci | Range changed from 10–109% to 27–73%. |
| Selected modifiers on Staves | Damage gained as extra Elemental Damage, Increased Mana Regeneration Rate, Increased Critical Hit Chance for Spells, and increased Critical Spell Damage Bonus modifiers received higher values than corresponding modifiers on Wands and Foci—50% higher on average. |
| Seaglass Spear base Critical Hit Chance | Changed from 10% to 7%. |
The staff modifier comparison is an average across the listed modifier values, not a claim that every individual roll is exactly 50% higher. The patch notes establish these particular changes; they are not a complete current item database.

What earlier item changes show about version checking
Grinding Gear Games’ version 0.2.0 patch notes, also published in 2025, changed Northpaw’s critical stats: its base Critical Hit Chance for attacks with weapons went from 8% to 7% and became unscalable, while its increased Critical Damage Bonus changed from 20–30% to 10–15%.
Together, the 0.2.0 and 0.3.0 notes show why an item value should be checked against the patch version and the item’s exact wording. A historical maximum or base value is evidence of what that version changed, not proof of the item’s current value or of how every similar item behaves.

How to compare critical-hit build options
Use the same skill and current patch context for both options. Then compare the parts of the damage model separately:
- Find the base chance source. Establish whether the skill draws its base chance from the weapon, the skill itself, or another stated source.
- Check applicable chance modifiers. Include only modifiers that affect the skill or weapon in question, and verify any skill conditions or limits in the live game.
- Compare critical damage bonus. Start with the stated base and account for applicable additions, increases or reductions, and more/less modifiers without assuming an unverified interaction.
- Account for ordinary damage and speed. A chance or critical bonus comparison alone does not establish which setup deals more damage overall; hit damage and attack or cast speed also matter.
- Verify version and scope. Confirm the item’s current values and whether each modifier is local or global before drawing a numerical conclusion.
Do not treat Path of Exile 1 rules as Path of Exile 2 rules
The community wiki describes Path of Exile 2’s “Critical Damage Bonus” as analogous to Path of Exile 1’s critical strike multiplier. That is a terminology analogy, not evidence that the games share identical formulas or numbers. Use Path of Exile 2 skill descriptions, items, and patch notes for Path of Exile 2 calculations.
