In Dungeons & Dragons, casting a spell is governed by the spell’s rules and the feature that gives a character access to it. A caster must meet any listed Verbal, Somatic, or Material requirements; an Arcana check, by contrast, is for recalling magical lore, not a routine roll to cast a spell. This guide follows the 2024 Basic Rules; 2014 rules are identified where they differ.
What “arcane magic” means in play
“Arcane magic” describes a kind of magic in the game’s fiction, but it is not one universal procedure that every spellcaster follows. The 2014 rules use the image of spellcasters manipulating invisible strands of raw magic to explain spellcasting; that is flavor, not an extra mechanic all characters must use. The 2024 Wizard description, for example, presents wizards as students of arcane magic and gives them class-specific spellcasting rules and a spellbook.
For a rules question, use the character’s class feature or other feature that grants spells, along with the spell’s own description. Those rules establish which spells the character can cast and what each casting requires. A wizard is one example of an arcane spellcaster, not a synonym for every spellcaster.
How a character casts a spell
- Confirm access to the spell. The character must have the spell through a class feature or another rules source. The 2024 Player’s Handbook covers gaining and casting spells in Chapter 7, “Spells.”
- Read the spell’s requirements. Check its casting details, including its Components entry, and follow the relevant class or feature rules.
- Provide every required component. The 2024 Basic Rules say a character unable to provide one or more required components cannot cast the spell.
There is no general Arcana roll in this sequence. Spellcasting follows the spell and feature rules; the DM may call for an Arcana check when a character tries to recall magical information.

What V, S, and M components require
A spell’s Components entry identifies whether it requires Verbal (V), Somatic (S), Material (M), or a combination. The 2024 rules treat these as requirements for casting, not optional descriptions.

These requirements are specific to the spell. A character who cannot meet even one listed component requirement cannot cast that spell under the 2024 rules. For material components, read the spell’s text carefully: a listed cost or a statement that the component is consumed can prevent treating a focus or pouch as a complete substitute.

When a focus or component pouch works
A spellcasting focus or component pouch can stand in for eligible material components, but neither is a blanket replacement for every material named in a spell. The 2024 rules permit substitution in the cases they specify, and the caster needs a free hand to access the material component or applicable substitute. A focus also has to be allowed by a feature that supports its use.
The 2014 Basic Rules make two material-component limits explicit: a focus or pouch does not replace a component with a listed cost, and a component consumed by a spell must be supplied for each casting. These are 2014 rules statements; use the rules edition your table has adopted rather than blending text from editions.

What an Intelligence (Arcana) check does
Arcana is a knowledge skill. In the 2024 rules’ skill summary, Intelligence (Arcana) covers recalling lore about spells, magic items, and the planes. A DM can call for the check when a character tries to remember such lore; the check is not a requirement for casting spells.
The 2014 Basic Rules describe the skill more broadly: “Your Intelligence (Arcana) check measures your ability to recall lore about spells, magic items, eldritch symbols, magical traditions, the planes of existence, and the inhabitants of those planes.” This wording is from the official 2014 rules, not an attribution to a named speaker.

2024 and 2014 rules: keep the editions distinct
The basic distinction remains useful in either edition: component entries specify what a spell requires, while Arcana concerns knowledge. However, the wording and coverage of the rules are not identical. Use the version your group is playing and refer to that edition’s relevant class feature, spell description, and general rules.

A quick way to resolve common confusion
- “Do I roll Arcana to cast this?” Not as a general spellcasting rule. Check the spell and the feature that grants it.
- “Can I cast it while silenced or restrained?” Check its components and the situation. Magical silence or a gag prevents a Verbal component under the 2024 rules; a Somatic component needs a usable hand.
- “Does my focus cover this material?” Only if the rules allow substitution for that component. Check whether the spell lists a cost or says the material is consumed.
- “What is Arcana for, then?” Recalling lore about magical subjects when the DM calls for an ability check.
