On August 13, 2024, GameSpot reported that SteamDB showed 16,947 concurrent players while Valve had not publicly announced the game. The 16,000 figure is a rounded version of that count, not a player total issued by Valve.
What did the 16,000-player figure actually measure?
GameSpot’s George Yang reported on August 13, 2024, that SteamDB recorded 16,947 people playing Deadlock concurrently. “Concurrent” means players active at the same time in the tracked moment; it does not mean 16,947 people had been invited in total, nor does it count everyone who had ever accessed the game. The report attributed the number to SteamDB, not to a Valve announcement. GameSpot’s August 13, 2024 report
SteamDB is a third-party Steam tracking site, not part of Valve or Steam. Its figures are tracking data rather than official statements from the developer. SteamDB’s Deadlock charts
Why was Deadlock described as unannounced?
In August 2024, players were already accessing and discussing Deadlock, but Valve had not yet made a conventional public announcement. At the time of the August 13 report, GameSpot also described restrictions on players discussing their experience. The game’s unusual visibility before a broad public reveal helps explain the headline: a substantial audience had access through a playtest while public information and discussion were still limited.

Those discussion rules changed shortly afterward. An August 23, 2024 update record reproducing Deadlock forum notes said Valve was lifting rules on public conversation to allow streaming, community websites, and discussion. The same update said access would remain invite-only and the game was still in early development, with temporary art and experimental gameplay. SteamDB’s August 23, 2024 update record
What is Deadlock’s status now?
As of October 8, 2026, Valve’s Steam page still describes Deadlock as “a multiplayer game in early development.” It says access is “currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters,” and the store page says the game is not yet available on Steam. These are the page’s current statements on that date, not a guarantee that access or release status will remain unchanged. Deadlock on Steam

The Steam listing tags Deadlock as a MOBA, third-person shooter, hero shooter, team-based, competitive, and multiplayer game. Those are store tags; they should not be mistaken for a complete official account of its mechanics. The page emphasizes that the game remains in early development.
How does the 2024 count compare with later figures?
SteamDB’s Deadlock chart lists an all-time peak of 236,730 concurrent players on October 6, 2026. That later figure is a chart value for a different date and measurement context from the August 13, 2024 count reported by GameSpot. The 2024 figure describes the count reported at that time; the later figure is identified as an all-time peak. Neither should be presented as the other, and neither is a Valve-issued player count. How can you get access to Deadlock?
According to Valve’s Steam page as of October 8, 2026, access is limited to friend invites through current playtesters. The page does not list Deadlock as available for general purchase or open signup. Because invite arrangements can change, check the official listing for the latest status rather than treating the 2024 playtest conditions as current.
