That means a wall or protected position is not necessarily a lasting guarantee of safety. Ubisoft has announced the mechanic, but the game is still forthcoming, so its precise rules and enemy behavior have not been independently verified.
How destruction changes flanking in Rainbow Six Tactics
A conventional flank works around the routes and sightlines already present on a map. Ubisoft describes a different possibility in Rainbow Six Tactics: players can break walls to open lines of sight, remove enemy cover or create new entry points. A position that seemed protected, or a route that seemed blocked, can therefore change when the environment does.
Creative director Elie Benhamou told But Why Tho? that a shot can create a hole which another Operator can use to establish a line of fire. In tactical terms, one Operator may make the opening while another exploits it. This is the clearest announced example of destruction reshaping a flank: it can create a route or angle that was not available before.
What that means for cover
Cover is conditional if the player can alter the surrounding environment. Breaking a wall may expose an enemy position; an opening can also change which angles are dangerous for the squad. The mechanic therefore has implications for both sides’ safety, rather than simply giving the player a way through a barrier.

That is a design implication of the announced destruction system, not a confirmed description of enemy tactics. Ubisoft’s announcement does not specify which surfaces can be destroyed, how much damage they take or whether enemy AI will deliberately create openings in every encounter.
How Breach Planning fits into the assault
Ubisoft describes Breach Planning as a way to coordinate actions into a synchronized assault. Xbox Wire adds that The Breach temporarily interrupts the turn-based rhythm, allowing all active Operators to move together. Destruction can thus be part of a planned approach: the squad coordinates its assault, while an opened wall may create a sightline or entry opportunity.

Benhamou told Xbox Wire that the series’ tactical core is built around “intel, planning, high-stakes decision-making, and elite Operators with distinct roles.” The announced system points to destruction as one tool within that decision-making, not a guarantee that every breach or flank will succeed.
What Ubisoft has announced about the game
Ubisoft announced Rainbow Six Tactics on August 25, 2026, as a single-player, turn-based tactical game in which players command Six and the Rainbow squad. Its announcement lists 15 Operators, squads of up to four Operators, and more than 45 locations, alongside Hostage Rescue, Bomb Disposal and Target Elimination missions. Operators are described as having distinct abilities, specialized gadgets and skill trees; between missions, players can upgrade a base, train Operators and strengthen the team. These are planned-game details from the publisher, not independently verified final-release counts or features. See Ubisoft’s announcement.

Not in every mission, according to game director Martial Potron. In an interview with TechRadar, Potron said a fully non-lethal campaign is not possible in every situation, citing enemies who may be unreachable for non-lethal takedowns. The report gives a Venice map divided by a river as an example.

Arresting weakened enemies can still be worthwhile: Benhamou described it as a risk-reward choice, since the arrest is harder but can provide useful intelligence. The mission objective remains the priority. This makes restraint a tactical option rather than a promise that every encounter can be resolved without lethal force.
