What should I pack for a gaming convention? Start with your badge or ticket, phone, a small day bag, a power bank and charging cable, water if the event allows it, and comfortable shoes. Then check the show’s current rules for badge pickup, bags, food, cosplay props and accessibility before adding optional gear.
Core checklist: what to pack for a gaming convention
- Badge or ticket: Confirm you have the required badge or ticket and know whether it must be picked up at the venue. PAX Unplugged says a badge is required for entry; its official FAQ calls the badge “the key to all things at PAX Unplugged.”
- Pickup confirmation and photo ID, if required: For some badge pickups, PAX Aus asks attendees to bring the confirmation email with receipt number and photo ID. Check your own event’s instructions rather than assuming the same process applies everywhere.
- Phone and official app: Download the event app if one is available. PAX describes its app as a source for current event details and maps; PAX Aus lists schedules, exhibitors and maps among its app features. Availability and details can vary by show.
- Small day bag: Carry only what you need and leave room for items you collect. Check the event’s size limits and search rules before choosing a bag.
- Portable power bank and charging cable: Bring a cable compatible with your phone or other devices. Organizer guidance from PAX Unplugged and PAX Aus recommends portable charging.
- Water bottle, if allowed: Confirm the event and venue’s drink policy before packing it.
- Hand sanitiser: PAX Aus includes it in its suggested items.
- Comfortable shoes: Expect plenty of walking. PAX Aus advises: “Comfortable shoes are critical, as you’ll be doing a LOT of walking around.”
These items reflect organizer advice for specific PAX events, not universal convention rules. Check your own show’s official guidance and venue policies before you leave.
Optional comfort items and entertainment
- Spare socks and a light layer: Consider them if you expect to be out all day or venue temperatures and local weather may vary. PAX Unplugged suggests spare socks and layers based on conditions at its Philadelphia venue; those conditions may not match another event.
- Snacks: Pack them only when both the event and venue permit outside food.
- Handheld console, e-reader or tablet: Take one only if you expect to use it and are comfortable carrying it. A power bank may help if the device needs charging.
- Reusable water bottle: Useful where permitted; check rules on bottle type, filling stations and entry screening.
Check event and venue rules before packing
Policies can differ between conventions and venues, and can change from year to year. For example, PAX Unplugged allows outside food, while the Los Angeles Convention Center FAQ says outside food is not allowed but a personal water bottle is allowed. Verify the current rules for your specific event and venue.
- Bag size and searches: PAX East’s 2026 rules say bags are checked at entrances and describe paid coat and baggage check. Do not assume those rules apply to another PAX event or a later year.
- Prohibited items: Review the show’s current prohibited-items list, including restrictions on food, drink, batteries or other items where applicable.
- Cosplay props: If you are cosplaying, read the event’s prop-weapons policy and find out whether a Prop Check process is required. PAX Aus directs cosplayers to its prop rules and Prop Check.
- Accessibility and medical needs: Check the event’s accessibility services and any process for medical items or accommodation requests before arriving, so you know what documentation or advance arrangements may be needed.
- Badge pickup and entry: Confirm entry requirements, pickup location and any identification needed for your badge type.
Pack for the way you will attend
For a short visit, the core list may fit in a small bag or pockets. For a full day, prioritize comfort and charging over optional electronics. If you plan to buy merchandise or collect game materials, leave space in your bag, but make sure its size remains within the venue’s rules. When comparing bags or charging gear, focus on carry weight, capacity, device compatibility and event restrictions rather than unverified product claims.
