Feed a Minecraft dolphin raw cod: hold it and use the interact control on a dolphin in the water. Raw salmon is also listed as food in a secondary reference, but raw cod is the clearest documented choice. Feeding can prompt a dolphin to lead you toward an underwater ruin or shipwreck chest; it does not tame the dolphin or make it breed.
How to feed a dolphin
- Get raw cod and select it in your hotbar so your character is holding it.
- Approach a dolphin in the water and use the normal interact button for your platform while aiming at the dolphin.
- Watch where it swims: feeding may trigger it to guide you toward a nearby underwater ruin or shipwreck chest.
Raw cod is specifically named in the Bedrock Edition Update Aquatic guide. A secondary dolphin reference also lists raw salmon. The reviewed sources do not establish an exhaustive fish list for every current edition and version, so try raw cod first if another fish does not produce the expected response.

What happens when you feed one?
A fed dolphin may swim toward the chest of an underwater ruin or shipwreck. Microsoft’s Bedrock entity-behavior documentation describes the dolphin moving toward an underwater ruin or shipwreck. That documentation is specific to Bedrock behavior; it does not guarantee that every dolphin will find a chest in every edition or situation.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes feeding tame or breed dolphins?
No. Feeding is not the same as taming: it does not turn a dolphin into a controllable pet, and feeding does not make dolphins breed. The Minecraft Wiki fish-item reference describes feeding as increasing trust or interaction. In an older official Minecraft feature article, Java team member Nathan explains that trusted dolphins treat players “as one of their own” and pretend they are another dolphin. That describes their behavior, not pet ownership.
